That's verbal communication. But if you use any visual medium at all-if you make a poster; type a letter; create a business logo, a magazine ad, or an album cover; even make a computer printout-you are using a form of visual communication called graphic design. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term “graphic design” is used interchangeably with these due to overlapping skills involved. Graphic designers use various methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated. Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

WHAT IS A GLOSSARY?
A GLOSSARY, also known as a vocabulary, or clavis, is an alphabetical list of terms in a particular domain of knowledge with the definitions for those terms.
Traditionally, a glossary appears at the end of a book and includes terms within that book that are either newly introduced, uncommon, or specialized. While glossaries are most-commonly associated with non-fiction books, in some cases, fiction novels may come with a glossary for unfamiliar terms. A bilingual glossary is a list of terms in one language defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms (or at least near-synonyms) in another language. In a general sense, a glossary contains explanations of concepts relevant to a certain field of study or action. In this sense, the term is related to the notion of ontology. Automatic methods have been also provided that transform a glossary into an ontology* or a computational lexicon.**

Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, manga artists, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and anyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users, and David Jury, Head of Graphic Design at Colchester Institute in England, states that “typography is now something everybody does.”** In contemporary use, the practice and study of typography is very broad, covering all aspects of letter design and application, both mechanical (typesetting and type design) and manual (handwriting and calligraphy). TYPESETTING
TYPESETTING is the composition of text by means of arranging physical types* or the digital equivalents.
Stored letters and other symbols (called sorts in mechanical systems and glyphs in digital systems) are retrieved and ordered according to a language’s orthography for visual display. Typesetting requires the prior process of designing a font. There is a lot more to typesetting (and its sister, typography) than you would think. Both have their origins in the Gutenberg revolution and each, in their different ways, were concerned with the presentation of textual material in type format ready for printing. In earlier times there was a big difference between them. Typography was the art of designing, setting and arranging type whereas typesetting was the process (or craft) of actually setting the type. Together, typography and typesetting combine an art and process that only really succeeds when invisible. In many respects, the layout of your book is comparable to the background music added to a film. Its primary duty is to make your text clear and accessible, but ideally it should also enhance the meaning with mood and style. Though stylish, the layout must also be durable (indeed timeless), transcending fashion. Much creative energy goes into this art, which is the subject of passionate debate among its practitioners.

THE TYPOGRAPHIC SCALE
The typographic scale has been used for centuries as a means of creating balanced and harmonious font sizing. It is the bedrock of modern typography.
The classic typographic scale is a harmonious progression of font sizes, the sizes 6 pt, 12 pt, 24 pt, and 48 pt are all present in the typographic scale. Consequently, the ratio of the classic typographic scale is two. The classic musical scales also have a ratio of two. Each C note on a piano, for example, vibrates twice as quickly as the previous C note. The classic typographic scale is very much like a musical scale. he second defining property of a scale is the number of notes, n, in the scale. There are five sizes in each interval of the classic typographic scale. As a result, the classic typographic scale is a pentatonic scale—like Jazz and much of the world’s traditional music. The third, and final, property of a scale is its fundamental frequency, f_0. On a piano, this is the frequency of the “middle C” note. In the classic typographic scale, the fundamental frequency is the pica. This value, 1 pica = 12 pt, is the baseline font size used in print typography. The intuition of the human typographers was extremely close! However, there are a few discrepancies: First, there are four lost notes: the 28 pt, 32 pt, 42 pt, and 55 pt font sizes. These lost notes were not listed in the original typographic charts, despite being perfectly in tune with the rest of the scale. These notes are necessary to complete other notes that were listed in the original typographic charts. For example, the 16 pt font size is completed by the 32 pt font size— which is one of the lost notes. The second issue is that two of the notes are flat. The 60 pt and 72 pt sizes are off by a total of 4 pt. These two font sizes were rounded down to the nearest multiple of the pica, so this may have been a practical concession for early printing processes, rather than a true error. However, the result is that modern typographers have inherited two notes that are not quite in tune. The final discrepancy is that there is an extra note: Every interval of the classic typographic scale has five notes, but the original typographic charts have six notes in the first interval. The 11 pt font size doesn’t belong in the scale. It would sound sharp or flat if played by a musical instrument.
