Von Trier producer plans Viking epic BY GEOFFREY MACNAB
Maverick Danish producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen has announced details of his new $15m Viking movie, The Long Ships (Röde Orm) in Cannes this weekend. He also revealed that his long-term collaborator, Lars von Trier, is planning an action movie. Speaking at the Film i Vast reception, Jensen said The Long Ships, which will be directed by Hans Petter Moland (In Order Of Disappearance) and scripted by Tobias Lindholm (The Hunt), will star Stellan Skarsgaard and assorted members of the actor’s family. “[Stellan] can bring one or two sons, depending on what we need in the story,” said Jensen. The film will shoot in 2016 in several Scandinavian languages and Zentropa is co-producing with Nordisk. The Long Ships will be made as “one or two” feature films and as a four-part TV series. Jensen, who will produce, said: “I haven’t seen a good Viking film in my life. The atmosphere of our story is very much Pirates Of The Caribbean goes Viking.” The veteran producer also confirmed that von Trier is writing a US-set horror movie for The Salvation director Kristian Levring. As for von Trier’s own directorial plans, Jensen said “he is talking about making a Trier version of an action movie”. Having made horror (Antichrist), disaster (Melancholia) and erotic fare (Nymphomaniac), this is one of the few genres von Trier has not yet tackled.

Relativity-Bollywood pact details emerge BY JEREMY KAY
Relativity founder Ryan Kavanaugh and Bollywood network B4U chief Ishan Saksena are exploring an unorthodox film-production model through their freshly minted content and distribution alliance. Under the terms of the partnership, announced in Cannes this weekend, the parties have set up a $100m war chest to create content for the US and India and will access each other’s distribution channels to exploit properties across both markets.
There are also plans to launch a pay-TV channel in India and RelaTV, an over-the-top platform targeted at the Indian market. It will carry original material and existing Relativity titles that will not conflict with Kavanaugh’s non-exclusive supply deal with Netflix. In one of the more intriguing planks of the US-Indian arrangement, the partners will collaborate on simultaneous US and Indianlanguage feature production. Kavanaugh and Saksena said
they were modelling a round-theclock schedule that would involve a well-known franchise shot on the same Hollywood set. The plan would result in a US feature with minor roles for Bollywood actors and an Indian-language version with US actors in minor roles. The model is not unique but it is rare. During the 1930s shoot of Dracula starring Bela Lugosi on the Universal lot, a Mexican crew would arrive at night to shoot the Spanish-language version.

TF1 International has been racking up sales on French multicultural marriage comedy hit Serial (Bad) Weddings. The picture, which has sold more than 7 million tickets in France, sparked a bidding war in Italy where it was finally snapped up by Italian International Film. It has also sold to Spain (A Contracorriente), Germany (Neue Visionen), Canada (A-Z Films), CIS (Cinema Prestige), Hungary (MTVA), Portugal (Outsider Films), Morocco (Golden) and airlines (Skeye). CDI Films has picked it up for Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Peru. Frenetic has already achieved 100,000 admissions in Switzerland and Cineart has racked up 120,000 entries in Benelux. The company is also launching sales on renowned choreographer Angelin Preljocaj’s ballet-based drama Polina, about a talented young Russian ballerina who follows her lover to Europe where she discovers contemporary dance. Preljocaj will be in Cannes to present the project, which he is codirecting with Valerie Muller, to buyers today. Casting of an actress who also has a dance background is under way. The project is due to shoot in winter 2014.

UK arthouse exhibitor Curzon has acquired all rights to Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Cannes Competition entry Leviathan in a deal negotiated with Pyramide International. Zvyagintsev’s third film to launch at Cannes, after The Banishment and Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize-winner Elena, follows the owner of a small-town auto shop who comes into conflict with the local mayor. Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Aleksey Serebryakov and Elena actress Elena Lyadova star in the drama written by Zvyagintsev and Elena and The Banishment co-writer Oleg Negin. Producers are Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergey Melkumov, DoP is Mikhail Krichman and music comes from Philip Glass. The deal means Curzon has two films playing in Competition this week, following their pre-buy of the Dardenne brothers’ Two Days, One Night. Philip Knatchbull, CEO of Curzon, said: “We’re delighted to have wrapped up the UK rights ahead of Leviathan’s Competition screening and to be working again with Pyramide International.” As reported in Screen, Curzon last week finalised a deal for Andrew Haigh’s drama 45 Years. Crimson signs co-pro deal with Cargo, Tunnel By Jeremy Kay
China’s Crimson Forest Entertainment has struck a three-film co-production agreement with Cargo Entertainment and Tunnel Post Production. The deal covers psychological thriller Unknown Caller, Impulse, to star Tiger Chen, and sci-fi adventure Aurora. All three films are poised to go into production later this year and will be aimed at audiences in China and other international markets. Crimson Forest and Cargo will oversee financing and international sales, while Tunnel Post will provide post-production services.
Dancy meets Happy Prince Hannibal star Hugh Dancy has signed on for a leading role in Rupert Everett’s directorial debut, The Happy Prince, being sold here by Beta Cinema. Everett will also star as Oscar Wilde alongside Colin Firth, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson. BBC Films has added the $13.7m production to its slate, coming on board as co-producer and broadcasting partner, while Lionsgate UK has committed as co-producer and UK distributor. Piccadilly Pictures, the UK financier that has supported We Need To Talk About Kevin and Coriolanus, has unveiled a development fund to sit alongside its $25m finance fund — and has already backed projects from BBC Films and Charles Dance. Piccadilly’s Christopher Figg and Robert Whitehouse have a handful of projects benefiting from their Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme-qualifying development fund, and are looking to add more. The first projects include a feature version of Alice Thomas Ellis’s novel, The Inn At The Edge Of The World, which is being coexecutive produced by Dance and is aiming for a late 2014 shoot; and BBC Films co-development Gypsy Boy, which is being pro-
duced by Dee Koppang. “The fund will be available for projects that need further drafts,” explained Figg, whose credits also include Hellraiser and Trainspotting. “We tend not to develop things from scratch so the fund is to be a bridge for scripts between pre-production and shoot.” Piccadilly, which provides
backing against tax credits, presales and unsold rights, is aiming to invest up to $25m in 12 projects in the $1m-$15m range through its primary finance fund over the next 12 months. The company has recently invested in low-budget UK gangster films including Top Dog and Reign Of The General.

The film, which premiered in Cannes last year, will be released day-and-date in eight Arab countries — GCC (except Saudi Arabia), Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine — in August, following Ramadan.
MAD is building a pan-Arab distribution network for Arab and international films. It also aims to create a market for the new wave of award-winning independent Arab films, which have limited distribution across the region. The company has already forged a reputation for innovative, cost-effective marketing on recent releases such as Mohamed Khan’s Factory Girl and Ahmad Abdallah’s Rags And Tatters.

Force Majeure, Ruben Ostlund’s Un Certain Regard title that receives its world premiere here today, has been sold to major territories throughout Europe. The Swedish auteur’s family drama, set in the wake of an avalanche, has been sold by Philippe Bober’s Coproduction Office to Germany (Neue Vision), Benelux (Lumiere), Switzerland (Look Now!), Denmark (Ost For Paradis), Sweden (TriArt), Norway (Arthaus) and the Baltics (Black Hand/Must Kasi). The film, which stars Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren and Vincent Wettergren, features a striking scene in which a man cries uncontrollably for several minutes. Here in Cannes, Coproduction Office is also handling The Rossellini Project, its collection of 10 newly restored and digitised films by Italian master Roberto Rossellini. After screening at festivals in recent years, the final restored title in the collection — La Paura, made in 1954 — screens here in Cannes Classics.

China presents co-production challenge

Chinese animation studio Mili Pictures Worldwide has opened an office in Los Angeles, headed by producer Bill Borden. Borden’s credits include the High School Musical series, Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle and Mission: Impossible 3. Mili’s debut production, Dragon
Nest, will premiere on July 31 at China’s biggest video-gaming convention, ChinaJoy. Directed by Song Yuefeng, the adventure is based on a hit online game that has 100 million registered users. Exhibitors have given a mixed reaction to the European Commission’s multiplatform releasing experiment, results of which were announced in Cannes. Nine films were released by three groups in 15 territories and
included 39 day-and- date releases. Results were very soft. “Making films available on VoD does not lead to a very large number of transactions — purchase or rental,” said the report. Europa Cinemas president Nico Simon told Screen: “The fig-
ures are not significant to draw any conclusions [from] and some might not be accurate. We are very frustrated the whole exhibition sector was not consulted or involved.” A second set of experiments will start in June.

Andre Relis’s Los Angeles-based sales company VMI Worldwide, here selling Sundance selection Hellion, continues to push into production and has struck a supply deal with Cinedigm. The deal calls for four or five films a year and will include The Opposite Sex and War Pigs, which Ryan Little is set to start shooting in Michigan in the autumn. VMI Worldwide will produce and pre-sell the titles and Cinedigm will handle US distribution. “We are really pushing into production, whereas two or three years ago we were not doing it at all. Now it’s a big part of our business,” said Relis. “Sales remains very much a core part of our business, but this is an exciting development.” at mm Relis, a former partner460 Vision Films, left that company in 2010 to form VMI Worldwide.
Tapping into China is a challenge, according to speakers on a Chinese co-production panel held at the UK Film Centre in Cannes yesterday. Bona Film Group’s Jeffrey Chan said that co-produced films must have a focus for Chinese audiences, whether it is locations, storyline or cast. Road Pictures’ Cai Gongming, International who is currently producing ItalyUK-China co-production Coffee, which tells a story in each of the respective countries, said: “You must have a story that appeals to all countries. Fortitude International has acquired international sales rights to the L Frank Baum adaptation, Young Santa. Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer) will direct from a screenplay adapted by David Casci and Joel T Smith. Gudrun Giddings and Christian Arnold-Beutel will produce with Fortitude International partner Daniel Wagner of BiFrost Pictures. Production on the Santa Claus origin story is set for later this year. Fortitude International, launched by Nadine de Barros and producers Daniel Wagner and Robert Ogden Barnum, is in Cannes with a slate that includes The End Of The Tour. The David Foster Wallace biopic will star Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired all English-speaking territories earlier this year.

Gender-based film quotas are the only way to boost the position of women in the film industry, said panellists at a European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) workshop in Cannes on Saturday. The packed-out workshop, entitled ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Film!’, presented three studies looking at the position of women in the film industry. The timely conference followed comments by Cannes Film Festival jury president Jane Campion that there was “inherent sexism in the industry”. New findings by the EAO showed that female directors accounted for 16.1% of the 9,349 European films released in Europe from 2003-12, which in turn accounted for 8.7% of the box office in that period.

A British Film Institute study on female directors and screenwriters in the UK from 2010-12 revealed that women wrote 37% of the top independent films in that period and directed 18%. France’s National Cinema Centre also presented a study first released in France, which showed that 25% of first-time and 33% of second-time films were directed by women. “Unless we take affirmative
action, nothing will happen,” said Sanja Ravlic, Eurimages’ representative for Croatia. “I’ve never been an advocate of quotas but, after hearing these figures, I’m beginning to think they make sense,” said Italian producer Tilde Corsi of R&C Productions. Nik Powell, director of the UK’s National Film and Television School, said the UK should set up ring-fenced funds aimed at underrepresented communities, in the same way it had done to encourage regional production. “It worked for regional production where production was moved out of London to the other parts of the UK very successfully, so I don’t see why it can’t work with the different communities, whether that be female, black or disadvantaged,” he said.
Kino Lorber captures the Kingdom Kino Lorber has picked up North American rights to Andrew Mudge’s South African drama The Forgotten Kingdom, which The Little Film Company is selling internationally. The distributor plans a June 10 theatrical release through its Alive Mind Cinema platform, and has also taken TV and DVD rights in North America, while Gaiam TV has picked up digital rights. ZenHQ Films and Strongman’s film tells the story of a man who leaves Johannesburg’s slums to return to his ancestral land of Lesotho to bury his estranged father. Tre Vanner sets sights on first English features Convenience

UK sales outfit Moviehouse has added sales titles Convenience and gangster film Hackney’s Finest to its Cannes sales slate. Convenience stars Ray Panthaki, Vicky McClure, Adeel Akhtar and Verne Troyer as friends who set out to rob a petrol station to clear debts with Russian gangsters. The film was executive-produced by postproduction facility Framestore. Comic crime-thriller Hackney’s Finest, produced by Rickety Shack Films, depicts a drug-fuelled night of mayhem in east London. The deal was negotiated by producer Arin Alldridge of Rickety Shack and Moviehouse Entertainment’s Mark Vennis. Moviehouse’s production arm has also boarded Funny Cow, set to star Maxine Peake in the story of a female comedian’s rise to fame. Tinge Krishnan directs Tony Pitts’ script. Pitts will co-star while Kevin Proctor co-produces with Vennis.

Sweden’s Tre Vanner, producer of the hit Easy Money (Snabba Cash) trilogy, has announced the launch of two international thrillers — the company’s first in English. These include a thriller from acclaimed Swedish director Jens Jonsson and an English-language remake of the first of the Easy Money films. Both projects will be produced by Vanner and Swedish major Svensk Filmindustri, with Svensk handling Scandinavian distribution. The two companies merged in 2013. Jonsson’s Ibiza-set thriller The White Island centres on two female characters. The filmmaker, who won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2008 with The King Of Ping Pong and also directed Snabba Cash III — Life Deluxe, co-wrote the script with Matthew Ian Cirulnick, based on extensive research. Casting will start on the film in the next few months, with production set to begin in spring 2015. part of the wealthy elite in a major European capital.” The Easy Money remake was previously in development with Warner Bros with Zac Efron attached. The new script is being written by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, and is planned to be the first instalment in an English-language trilogy, based on the novels by Swedish crime writer Jens Lapidus. Director and cast are yet to be decided. Jonas Fors, CEO of Svensk, said: “We have seen a great interest in the films from several international partners and hope to close financing of these two films within the next few months.”

The Combine produced the upcoming Kill The Messenger with Bluegrass Films.

Cannes’ Marché du Film has released initial attendance figures and revealed that China’s presence is up 40% on 2013. The increased attendance from Chinese delegates made it the fifth-largest contingent, while Latin America continues to grow and now represents 4% of all Marché participants. More than 12,000 participants are expected by the close of the market. From the initial figures, producers account for 29%, followed by theatrical distributors with 21%, sales with 11%, and VoD and new media with 4%. returning to the Village, and Ukraine is present despite the political turmoil in the country. The 5,200 films offered this year include 3,100 completed titles, 810 documentaries and 144 films in 3D. A total of 44% of these titles are from Europe; 18% from the US; and 18% from France.
Film London presents its eighth PFM By Geoffrey Macnab
Film London has launched the 2014 Production Finance Market (PFM), with a global call for applications targeting experienced producers with projects to pitch international financiers. Dates have been set for the eighth PFM, which will take place in London from October 15-16. Following a successful pilot last year, Film London Micro-Market will run alongside the event on October 16. Aimed at projects budgeted at less than $1.4m, the Micro-Market connects UK filmmakers with financiers seeking low-budget features, as well as providing crucial training. As part of the recruitment drive for applications, Film London is presenting a panel on the international marketplace, with an introduction to the PFM, in Cannes today from 1:30pm to 2:30pm at the UK Film Centre. The PFM has helped support at least 50 projects, including Paolo Virzi’s Human Capital, enabling them to achieve success. This includes producers securing direct finance, and sales and distribution deals, as well as delegates building relationships and partnerships on projects not presented at the PFM. Peter Nicholson’s Dartmoor Killing pitched at the Micro-Market in October starts shooting next month after securing funding at the event, while a number of other projects are close to sealing investment deals.
Branco makes tracks to Conrad’s Outpost By Geoffrey Macnab
Veteran Portuguese producer Paulo Branco is planning a bigscreen adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s An Outpost Of Progress. After backing an adaptation of Conrad’s Almayer’s Folly in 2011, directed and co-written by Chantal Akerman, Branco is now working on a film version of the novelist’s short story. Written in 1897 and drawing on Conrad’s own experience in the Congo, An Outpost deals with two European men who are assigned to a trading post in a remote part of the African jungle. But as isolation demoralises the pair and disease weakens them, the story ultimately ends in tragedy. The film will shoot in Angola, close to the location where Conrad wrote the story. Hugo Vieira Da Silva will direct. The cast is led by Nuno Lopes. It will be made
through Leopardo Filmes and Amour Fou Vienna as a PortugalAustria co-production. Meanwhile, together with Filmgalerie 451, Branco is co-producing $6m Second World War drama The Captain from Flightplan director Robert Schwentke. The veteran producer is also working on an adaptation of cult
Polish novelist Witold Gombrowicz’s Cosmos, which will mark Andrzej Zulawski’s comeback as a director. The film is casting now and Branco expects to shoot later in the year. Already shooting is Bonnie and Clyde-style drama Astragal, directed by Brigitte Sy and adapted from the novel by Albertine Sarrazin. It stars Leila Bekhti and Reda Kateb, and is produced by Branco’s Alfama Films alongside France 3 Cinéma. This summer, Rohfilm will shoot Axel Koenzen’s feature debut, Deadweight, set on a container ship. Films Boutique will handle international sales. Stöter and Drechsel are here in Cannes to discuss their development slate. Drechsel is also serving as one of the jury members of the Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize for the best short in Critics’ Week.

Abu Dhabi will fete Pressman By Liz Shackleton
American Psycho producer Edward R Pressman is to receive a lifetime honour at the first edition of the International Showbiz Expo (ISBE), to be held in Abu Dhabi from October 20-22. Pressman, whose credits include Das Boot, Wall Street and the upcoming reboot of The Crow, will accept the Independent Producer Lifetime Achievement Award. Organised by event-management firm MCI and Singaporebased Xeitgeist Entertainment Group, the event is focused on the growing markets of Asia, India and the Middle East. It plans to cover all aspects of the entertainment business from film, TV and exhibition to theatre and digital media. The organisers said ISBE has been timed to take place before Abu Dhabi Film Festival (October 23-November 1). It expects to attract about 2,000 industry professionals and young creatives, and aims to encourage both learning and business. The event will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company. Confirmed partners include Middle East distributors and exhibitors Gulf Film, Novo Cinemas, Empire International, Reel Cinemas and VOX Cinemas.

At the ‘Risky Business’ panel, experts debated approaches to co-production, incentives and pre-sales. Talking about potential missteps, CAA’s Micah Green warned against producers rushing to attach talent to films. “They make commitments to the talent that they ultimately can’t honour,” he said. The new money Experts at the fifth International Film Finance Forum in Cannes say there is liquidity in the market and a need for more content. Geoffrey Macnab reports
ow does independent film differentiate itself from the fantastic TV that’s out there? Is there a shortage of product? Is French Cinema in crisis? Who has the money? How seriously should crowdfunding be taken? What are the new distribution strategies for the digital age? These were among the questions pondered by leading producers, agents and financiers at the fifth annual International Film Finance Forum organised in Cannes by Winston Baker (with Screen as a media partner). Speaking at the ‘Global State Of The Industry’ panel, United Talent Agency’s Rena Ronson disputed the idea aired by many in Cannes this week that there is a lack of films in the marketplace. “There is a lot of product out there,” she said. “There is too much product out to some extent.” She pointed out there are plenty of films in the $5m budget range. The shortfall is in the “higher budget” star-driven titles in the $20m-$40m range. Actors, Ronson noted, are “willing to reduce their upfront” and increase “the back end” in order to get strong indie films made. She talked up the marketing opportunities inherent in crowdfunding. “They [the online investors] are all going to see your movie.” The delegates noted the “new money in town”. “There is a lot of liquidity out there,” said Silver Reel’s Claudia Blümhuber, but she also warned against rigid models of equity or debt financing in a film-financing market in which “everything is changing”. Participant Media executive vice-president Jonathan King gave further details of Participant’s pan-American initiative, Participant PanAmerica, that began two years ago with Pablo Larrain’s No, and is continuing with Western-inspired action adventure El Ardor, an Argentina-Brazil-France co-production. Participant’s aim is to be “the equity piece” in helping finance these movies. Content everywhere Crisis, what crisis?, was the response from Stone Angels producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam at the ‘Fighting for a New French Cinema’ panel. Amid fierce debate about the 36-month delay that films in France face before they reach VoD platforms and concern about the decline of the home entertainment market, Le Pogam was sanguine about the situation facing big companies such as Gaumont. “There is no crisis,” he said, pointing to the continuing “need for content everywhere”. Producer Philippe Carcassonne and others predicted that a number of tax reliefs in France will be cancelled but that tax incentives aimed at luring international production will survive. Looking beyond theatrical The ‘Innovation in Distribution’ panel gave insight into forward-thinking platforms that can benefit distribution companies, sales agents and film-makers. ICM Partners’ Jessica Lacy said: “Just because films are not released theatrically, it doesn’t mean they’re not important to us.” ICM’s alternative packaging methods include theatre adaptations, television series and online platforms. While The Weinstein Company’s David Glasser admitted home entertainment sales are dropping, he insisted smaller releases, such as documentaries, are proving financially successful through alternative packaging. And though the industry does not yet widely accept day-and-date, he insisted Harvey Weinstein was set on finding a way to push alternative content to wider audiences. Anna Godas, CEO of London-based Dogwoof, highlighted the benefits of being a sales company and distributor, using Blackfish as an example where the campaign was controlled from pre-production to release. Wonders of Rohrwacher By Andreas Wiseman
Alice Rohrwacher, the 32-year-old Italian director, returns to the Croisette with Competition entry The Wonders (Le Meraviglie), a coming-of-age story set in the Italian countryside. In keeping with her first film Corpo Celeste, The Wonders draws on experiences from Rohrwacher’s own childhood. “I wanted to tell a story that speaks about how landscape is changing,” says the writer-director. “The region of middle Italy is my homeland and I wanted to frame a story within a changing landscape. “This is a film about tradition and asks the question, ‘What is tradition?’ It’s a question that’s not only relevant to Italians. It
seems that all over the world people are questioning who they are and what their roots are.” The drama, which stars youngster Maria Alexandra Lungu in the lead role alongside Sam Louwyck and Monica Bellucci, marks the first time Rohrwacher has directed her older sister, the established actress Alba Rohrwacher (I Am Love). “She was a great help during the writing of the film,” says the director. “I wanted to make a film about a first-born girl so of course Alba provided me with inspiration.” Rohrwacher’s promising career remains one of the brightest lights in a recently undernourished Italian film sector. The director is philosophical but
hopeful about the future of filmmaking in the territory. “There are a lot of good young Italian directors. But as with many countries we are perhaps lacking a movement. It can be quite a solitary process but with determination everything is possible.” At a time when the industry spotlight is on the lack of women directors, she sees some encouraging signs from her local industry. “It’s sad that we have to speak about this issue but also important to shine a light on it. That said, there are strong female Italian voices out there including Francesca Comencini, Francesca Archibugi and now Asia Argento,” she says. The Match Factory handles world sales on The Wonders.

Killers story — and I was thinking why not adapt this story in south Belgium just like Ripstein did with Mexico?” says du Welz. Ahead of filming Alleluia, the Belgian film-maker had knowledge of all previous works inspired by the infamous killers, but is confident his take brings something new to the table. “I love the subject — the mad love, the storyline and the characters,” he says. Having had experience on the Croisette before, du Welz is in no doubt about the boost the festival
can provide. “Cannes is a great worldwide window for a movie, so I feel lucky and honoured to present Alleluia this year. Thanks to Cannes, Alleluia will probably travel all over the world. Cannes offers respect and legitimacy to directors and it’s priceless.” While du Welz is not clear what’s next: “I’m working on different projects and hope to start something new as soon as possible.” But he knows what’s important: “To make a good movie, you need to be well surrounded.”
Why tell this story? I wanted to tell a story about the effect today’s pathological greed and rampant resource exploitation might have on desperate people in some dark future manifestation of the world as we currently know it. I wanted to throw together a murderous, resentful Australian man and a naïve American kid — a man who has witnessed the world fall apart and a kid who knows nothing other than things as they are. Did the film need to be shot in Australia? It felt like this story was specific to the Australian desert, specific to the last decade or more of the Australian resources boom, which saw the Australian economy propped up almost entirely by us digging up monumental amounts of dirt to fuel the growth of China, and Asia more generally. What was behind the casting of Robert Pattinson? I loved the idea of it. The prospect of giving a very recognisable performer the opportunity to do something right outside the parameters of people’s general
expectations is exciting. I knew he could do what I was asking him to do — he’s a great actor and I wouldn’t have cast him otherwise. How punishing were the conditions during the shoot? When we did our tech recce the week before the shoot, we found ourselves standing around in 50ºc temperatures. It was scary and dangerous. Fortunately, when we started shooting, the temperatures dropped to around 43ºc. The conditions were tough, but it’s worth it — you can feel that in every pore and nook and cranny of the movie. You’re switching gears on your next script, The Operators. It’s early days. I haven’t even started writing yet so I don’t know exactly what form it will take. What sort of films would you most like to make? I want to make all kinds of movies. I want them to be big and smart — a tough combo in the current climate, but it’s do-able. Andreas Wiseman

Winter Sleep Reviewed by Dan Fainaru The first thought that springs to mind once Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s sprawling, multi-layered, richly rewarding Winter Sleep (Kis Uykusu) reaches its end, is that one should never see this at a festival with a film tucked in before and another one just after it. For if Ceylan takes his own sweet time to reveal the full scope of his story, never allowing any consideration of length or pace to trouble him, his audience should do the same to fully appreciate one of the more rewarding film achievements of the year. No doubt every festival in sight will pick it up and every self-respecting arthouse will programme it, but it is worth looking beyond the ‘masterpiece’ label that will be stuck on it, to discover a deeply felt, powerfully delivered observation on Turkish society, with reflections that could easily resonate elsewhere as well. Shot in a small Cappadocia village, a mindboggling wild, natural location with a small hotel in the middle of it and a lot of poverty all around, the plot — if one can call the extensive, elaborate conversations taking place a narrative — focuses for a while on the relations between three main characters. Aydin (Bilginer), a middle-aged former actor, has inherited the hotel and most of the land around it. He deems himself a thinker — one of his projects is to write a history of Turkish theatre — and pretends to be immersed in his intellectual activities, such as writing think-pieces for an obscure magazine. He delegates the management of the property to his assistant, Hidayet (Pekcan), expecting him to take care of all unpleasant chores and save him the need to dirty his hands.

Necla (Akbag), Aydin’s sister, is a bitter, sharp-tongued divorcée who has retreated to her brother’s hotel to pester and criticise him. Nihal (Sozen), Aydin’s much younger wife, desperately tries to fill the void of her existence with social work, of which her husband disapproves, mainly because he feels left out. As the title indicates, it all takes place in winter, which already establishes the adequate climate for the proceedings. The characters spend most of the time indoors, in a kind of pressure cooker simmering with conflicts that must finally erupt in every direction. Nothing is left quite untouched, whether it is the application or abdication of religion in the moral, ethical and emotional fabric of these three characters or their social responsibilities, which they interpret wrongly, either on purpose or because of sheer ignorance — not to mention the unbridgeable distance separating them from the less-privileged classes. Though most of the attention in the first part is lavished on Aydin, his wife and his sister, more characters are brought into the limelight as the film progresses. They include teacher Levent (Saribacak), who needs a stiff drink to air his opinions; Imam Hamdi (Kilic), whose schemes are intended to keep the bosses happy
and his hot-blooded brother, Ismail (Isler), whose pride is stronger than his instinct for self-preservation. If subtitles are to be trusted, the abundant dialogue is masterfully calibrated to raise the tension and then let it down again, be it in the smouldering encounter kept sotto voce between Aydin and his sister, the heart-wrenching scene when Aydin’s passive-aggressive tactics break down the resistance of Nihal, or the Chekhovian conversation between three slightly inebriated men who let down their hair just a bit more than they meant to do. Ceylan’s cast performs with such precision and feeling that even Bergman would have applauded. Gokhan Tiryaki’s camerawork beautifully records the quiet force of their delivery, and the choice of the unique and striking Cappadocia location, where lodgings are built not on but inside huge mountain rocks, takes the breath away. And in case anyone misses the moral of the story, just watch what happens to the wild horse captured in an early sequence, to be tamed on Aydin’s request, before the film is over.

Saint Laurent Reviewed by Mark Adams A lush, stylish and evocative journey through the life of enigmatic French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, Bertrand Bonello’s magnificently mounted biopic succeeds as a warts-and-all (booze, drugs, sex, etc) story of a legendary fashion designer, but as with Jalil Lespert’s more soap opera-oriented film Yves Saint Laurent, released earlier this year, it offers little insight into this complex character. The film hangs well and looks the part, but is ultimately less than satisfying. While focusing mainly on 1967-76 as Saint Laurent (played with elegant ease by Gaspard Ulliel) goes through personal and professional crises — reflecting the transition of the era in society — the story is bookended by moments that deal with his early years as well as scenes just before his death (played as an older man by Helmut Berger), though the film’s core dwells not so much on fashion as on Saint Laurent’s reliance on drugs and drink, especially as he starts an obsessive affair with Jacques de Bascher (Garrel). Saint Laurent’s running time — two-and-ahalf hours — may well be epic but, while there are some beautifully composed sequences, it is often repetitive and still offers no real insight into what demons really drove Saint Laurent. A fear of snakes — cue dream scenes of serpents slithering over him — may look great, but it feels more like a film device rather than real depth.
The Rover Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Australian writer-director David Michod proved himself a cool-headed specialist in man’s inhumanity to man in his 2010 debut, the gangster story Animal Kingdom. If that film’s criminal clan seemed cold-bloodedly nasty, their behaviour looks like mere petulance compared to the ruthless bloodletting in Michod’s follow-up, The Rover. That’s as it should be, given that this new film envisages a post-collapse outback Australia in which survival is all, and life is cheaper than the bullets that can be routinely bought at gas stations. Michod and his collaborators — including Joel Edgerton, not acting here but co-writing a project originally conceived in 2007 — evoke a coherently brutal and blasted world with echoes of the more desolate breed of spaghetti Westerns, plus inevitable overtones of Mad Max, given the road-movie premise. But overall this is a disappointing film that loses dramatic momentum after an arrestingly grim first act. The presence of Robert Pattinson, in an uncharacteristically non-heroic and even awkward guise, alongside a magnetic Guy Pearce, will give the film some solid box-office

Ulliel is suitably lanky and lean to play the ever-elegantly attired Saint Laurent and, while the film opens in his studio where the haute couture dresses are assembled with military precision and where Saint Laurent creates his latest designs, the film soon switches to the nightclubs and dwells on the moment when he spots tall Chanel model Betty Catroux (Valade), who was to become his muse. She is joined by the free-spirited Loulou de la Falaise (Seydoux), with the pair helping inspire him. There are brief moments that dwell on the sexual and business relationship between Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé (Renier), who in reallife authorised Lespert’s version. But at the centre of the film is Saint Laurent’s obsession with de Bascher, with the pair engaging in a drug-
and booze-fuelled affair that only comes to an end when Bergé visits de Bascher. While a rather emotionless film — though the Cannes audience did murmur with concern when Saint Laurent’s much-loved dog, Moujik, dies after helping himself to a batch of spilled drugs — the film comes to life towards the end when after much procrastinating and worry Saint Laurent unveils his 1974 collection — vibrant and colourful clothes based on Moroccan themes — with Bonello making great use of splitscreen style — echoing the look of Mondrian and Saint Laurent’s famous Mondrian dress — and relishing the beautiful fashion-show backdrop.
appeal, but The Rover is at best a consolidation rather than a real advance for Michod. Strikingly shot in southern Australia by Natasha Braier in the spirit of Sergio Leone’s dustier desert imaginings, the film is set — an opening title tells us — “10 years after the Collapse”, somewhere in the back of beyond in a desolate, largely flat Australian landscape.
A man named Eric (Pearce) is sitting ruefully in a roadside diner when three passing desperados headed by an American named Henry (McNairy) make off with Eric’s car. Eric takes off in hot pursuit, and an icy face-off ensues between the thieves and this taciturn loner, who is more than able to stare them down. Eric wants his car back at all costs and is not too fussy about chalking up a few casualties in the process. He ends up in charge of Henry’s vulnerable wounded brother, Rey (Pattinson), and having got Rey’s wounds tended by a female doctor (Prior), Eric takes him in search of Henry. Why he wants his car so badly we only learn at the end, and unfortunately, when that reason is revealed, it comes across like the punchline to a shaggy dog story — and we won’t say any more than that, except to note that viewers may well feel cheated to have come so far for such a bathetic, or at least bathetically handled, pay off. But the film’s weak link is Pattinson, not because it is a bad performance, rather a familiar one: a mumbling hick who seems to be channelling the mannerisms of Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade, but who doesn’t quite belong in this imaginative universe, despite exposition of how people from across the world have managed to end up in this part of Australia.
Wild Tales Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Argentina’s Damian Szifron drives Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) hard across its six separate episodes — his one-man portmanteau of innovative and increasingly scathing social comedy is brilliantly conceived and confidently delivered. It’s hard to maintain the creative wit on display across the first three episodes (Pasternak, The Rats and Road To Hell). And these six unrelated stories of roughly 20 minutes duration occasionally struggle for air, particularly towards the fourth and fifth segments as the film’s tone grows more suffocating. But there is no doubt that Wild Tales is an accomplished comedy that aims high and delivers. It is gleefully imaginative in conception and also in execution — the desert dust of Tarantino-esque third instalment Road To Hell seems to drift over the whole film, making its classic Western themes more overt. In opting to shoot a string of thematically linked but separate short films, Szifron has taken on quite a challenge to sustain momentum, difficult when the action cuts, the scene changes and new principals are introduced every 20 minutes. But by episode three, however, the directorwriter is on top of his game in Road To Hell, with Leonardo Sbaraglia as a macho Audi driver who gets into the ultimate road-rage battle with a battered Peugeot driver (Walter Donado).

So perfectly timed is this sequence, it creates a problem for Argentina’s biggest star Ricardo Darin — who appears in episode four, Bombita, as a mild-mannered explosives engineer. Darin is provoked into action by the thievery of the municipal car park authorities — with predictably explosive results, if not quite the fireworks of the opening episodes. Part five, The Bill, operates in a far greyer area morally when a millionaire businessman does whatever is necessary to cover up his son’s involvement in a hit and-run accident in which a pregnant woman is killed. Szifron finishes with Til Death Do Us Part, his pièce de résistance: a wild, wild wedding in
which a deceived bride (Rivas) becomes increasingly unhinged. Throughout, Wild Tales is never predictable. Its tales of the unexpected have twists and turns, but they are always innovative, and the music choices are unexpectedly left-field and pulpishly entertaining. Cameraman Javier Julia is more unleashed in some of the episodes, particularly the last. The bride may lose her head as the camera spins around her, but there is a solid team behind Szifron, notably with Ruth Fischerman’s punchy production design.
ning gag — but he is also a smart and sardonic type who does not suffer fools (and foolish questions) gladly, and a man with a deep and emotional Russian soul. Other talking heads in Russia, Canada and the US fill in the background, including a former KGB agent interviewed in a park with the granddaughter he has been delegated to look after, who provides some of the film’s more hilarious moments. The story begins by establishing just how central ice hockey was to the Soviet Union’s attempt to demonstrate the superiority of the communist system. We learn about Anatoli Tarasov, the team’s talented first coach, responsible, it is suggested, for bringing lessons from ballet and chess to bear on a sport until then known more for its boxing moves. The team’s next coach, Viktor Tikhonov, is painted as a rigid Politburo-appointed disciplinarian with whom Fetisov soon came into conflict. But as one of the famous ‘Green Unit’ of five top players in the 1980s, Fetisov and his teammates had plenty of bargaining power themselves, which they used in 1989 when a crumbling, cash-strapped Soviet Union finally
allowed them to play in the NHL — for a cut of their wages. Polsky’s documentary edits the facts to suit its dramatic arc, suggesting inaccurately that but for the US team’s surprise win in the 1980 Winter Olympics, the Soviet team’s progress was one long triumphal march. And it ably times for maximum effect a revelation about its main interviewee’s six-year stint as minister of sport under Vladimir Putin. But the main achievement of Red Army is to shine a fascinating hockey-stadium sidelight on the post-war history of Russia.
Red Army Reviewed by Lee Marshall Presented by the dream team of Werner Herzog and Jerry Weintraub, this feisty documentary about the CSKA Moscow ‘Red Army’ ice hockey dream team of the 1970s and ’80s, and the Soviet national team that was a carbon copy of it, tells an engaging story that is as much about life in Russia then and now as it is about padded hockey jocks. With a feelgood audience appeal, this well-crafted meld of sport and politics is sure to have some theatrical life after its Cannes premiere. In the wry vein of doc-directing colleagues such as Michael Moore or Jonathan Nossiter, Polsky squeezes humour as well as pathos out of his source material. He is aided in this by the film’s ‘hero’ and main interviewee, former Red Army team defender Viacheslav ‘Slava’ Fetisov, whose state-negotiated ‘transfer’ to play in the US National Hockey League (NHL) following Perestroika opened the floodgates for hundreds of ice-hockey players to try their luck outside the former Soviet Union. Fetisov is an often reluctant subject whose frequent checking of his mobile phone while the camera is filming becomes a kind of run-

How To Train Your Dragon 2 Reviewed by Mark Adams As animation franchises go, the heady combination of rough-and-ready Vikings teamed with dragons offers up plenty of rollicking fun and games. DreamWork Animation’s 2011 film How To Train Your Dragon proved to be a hit, taking $495m internationally, balancing comedy, action and a dash of sentimentality, and this smartly paced sequel does a great job of drawing out the lead characters, expanding the world in which they exist and adding in some warm-hearted and moving moments. Dragons sweeping through the air combined with the raucous antics of cheerful Vikings makes for perfect 3D animated fun, and while the film offers up elements of Brave, Frozen, Harry Potter and even Avatar, it also manages to suffuse its action-packed and often thoughtful story with a real sense of heart to balance its need for family-friendly comedy. Released by Fox, the film should be poised to be one of the hits of the summer. A very strong voice-cast help proceedings immensely and there are enough nicely staged twists and turns to keep its target audience engaged and entertained. Set some five years after the previous film, heroic but rather gawky teen Hiccup (voiced again by Jay Baruchel) has grown to be a good-looking (though still gawky) young man who enjoys bonding with his loyal dragon while railing against the idea of taking over from his burly father, Stoick (Gerard Butler, having a fine old time playing a Scottish Viking) as chief of their tribe. The opening scenes of the clan engaging in some light dragon-racing (a sport that involves throwing surprisedlooking sheep into nets, and which owes a debt of gratitude to Quidditch) allow the film to re-introduce Hiccup’s friends and classmates, including his love interest, Astrid (Ferrera) along with Snotlout (Hill), Fishlegs (MintzPlasse), Tuffnutt (Miller) and twin sister Ruffnut (Wiig). Now that the tribe no longer fight dragons and live happily with them in their midst, things have changed in the village of Berk. But peace is threatened by the news that legendary dragon hunter Drago Bludvist (Hounsou) and his dragon army have plans to invade the region and take over the village’s dragons. Plus Hiccup has to confront and negotiate with the mysterious dragon rider who controls a massive alpha dragon that can manipulate smaller dragons. When the rider turns out to be someone close to Hiccup, the scene is set for a series of surprises, emotional reunions and reconciliation, all of which act as a prelude to an all-out battle.

Billed as a ‘romantic comedy’, Jessica Hausner’s Amour Fou proves to be a spare, bone-dry comedy of manners as it addresses emerging notions of democracy and freedom in early 19th-century Germany along with more personal matters of life and death. Elegantly executed in a manner reminiscent of Eric Rohmer, it has the same rigour and solemnity that have marked Hausner’s previous features, but the rarefied subject matter and measured pace will attract only the most dedicated and patient admirers, suggesting modest arthouse potential at best. Inspired by the suicide of poet Heinrich von Kleist in 1811, Amour Fou also has similarities to Mike Leigh’s Competition entry Mr. Turner in the way it immerses the viewer in a long-gone age. There is an attention to detail and manners that is quietly absorbing as we witness the daily life of wife and mother Henriette Vogel (Schnoink). Static tableaux capture scenes of evening salons and family meals, all in rooms of terracotta red and sky blue. There are music recitals and waltzes, dogs loll around and a vase of cut flowers is ever present. You could be observing a gallery of paintings from the period. When the melancholic poet and author von Kleist (Friedel) first meets Henriette, he thinks he may have found a soulmate. He is convinced she shares his existential angst and belief that life is essentially without purpose or meaning. He makes her a bold proposition of a suicide pact in which he will kill her and then take his own life. She rejects the notion as preposterous, though she is not the first he has approached. Her view changes when she is diagnosed with a terminal illness and the possibility of arranging the time and manner of her own death becomes a big adventure. Hausner milks some gentle irony from the ebb and flow of Heinrich and Henriette’s commitment to their pact. She grows more determined as he suffers doubts. Heinrich regains enthusiasm as her terminal diagnosis is challenged, though he often seems to prefer the idea of a pact with his cousin, Marie (Hüller). Anyone with an understanding of the politics and social currents of the period will derive greater satisfaction from Amour Fou. A general audience can savour the smaller struggle between Henriette and Heinrich, a tussle that grows to dominate the film and lend it a focus.

nce spotted only in the midnight programmes of mainstream film festivals, genre films have broken out over the last few years and are starting to make their mark across every section of the programme. Cannes is one such example; think Antichrist and Only God Forgives in Competition in 2009 and 2013, respectively, or Sightseers in 2012 in Directors’ Fortnight. This year sees the launch of Cannes’ first Fantastic Mixer networking event as part of the Marché, bringing together film-makers, producers and sales agents among others. Julian Richards of the UK’s Jinga Films, whose slate includes Jeremy Wooding’s Blood Moon and Alejandro Hidalgo’s The House At The End Of Time, says Cannes is a “one-stop shop” for genre films. “Cannes is still the market to launch a genre film because you can cover all territories, while also getting the attention of festival programmers and press worldwide.” “Cannes is a great market for us because we offer a specific elevated brand that the buyers have come to respect. You won’t find a romantic comedy or cheap knock-off in our booth,” adds Michael Paszt, managing partner of Canada’s Raven Banner, whose biggest draw here is Lowell Dean’s WolfCop, centring on an alcoholic cop who turns into a werewolf. “It’s a wonderful market and provides a platform for so many international distributors,” says Los Angeles-based Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions. “Cannes’ strength as an overall market translates into being a great market for genre as well.” This year Blumhouse International is overseeing sales of Sinister 2, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s Viral, Kevin Greutert’s Visions and Brad Peyton’s Incarnate. Lloyd Kaufman, president and cofounder of Troma Entertainment, is less convinced about Cannes as a genre market: “Genre films used to ride the back of the bus at Cannes, now they’re not even on the bus.” To that end, Troma is in Cannes with a crowd-sourced documentary Occupy Cannes, which will deal largely with genre films and how they are treated at Cannes. In celebration of Troma’s 40th anniversary, Kaufman will also launch the trailer for Return To Nuke ’Em High: Vol 2 on the Croisette. Genre bares its teeth As Cannes Marché launches its first Fantastic Mixer networking event, Ian Sandwell talks to some of the key players in genre film-making
(Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2) and Australia (Zak Hilditch’s These Final Hours). Bolotin adds that current genre trends vary from country to country and in terms of XYZ’s approach, “the goal for us is to present the market with elements of genre they haven’t seen before. We’re constantly hearing from buyers that the same old stuff isn’t working well. We’re attempting to differentiate ourselves by identifying and supporting films and film-makers that aren’t afraid to take risks while still working within a commercial structure of storytelling.” XYZ’s diverse Cannes slate bears this out. The company will be introducing Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Spring with a promo, footage from Ernesto Diaz Espinoza’s Redeemer and selling titles including Kevin Smith’s Tusk, Christopher Denham’s Preservation and Nicholas McCarthy’s Home. If there’s a trend to be found in genre at the moment, it’s that the films are more “director driven,” notes Sam Englebardt of Demarest Films, who is financing and producing Tusk: “That’s exactly how we structured Tusk where it was basically a creative bet on his [Kevin Smith’s] vision as a film-maker.” Blum, who is in Cannes for Directors’ Fortnight screenings of Sundance award winner Whiplash, says “things that make a great horror movie are always the same”, adding that characters and story should not become “secondary to the scares. Audiences are always interested in seeing new and different variations in genre. Film-makers and creators have to be more creative to hit their audiences and make sure they are creating great stories that will cut through the clutter.” Braving the battlefield Kaufman suggests the current scene is both booming and suffering from a distinctly modern conflict. “The innovators are making hundreds of genre movies and from this group come the gems that are visionary and game-changing. Unfortunately, very few of them get to play in movie theatres and are ignored. This is why the battlefield is littered with the dead careers of too many talented film-makers and the carcasses of independent movie studios,” he says. Englebardt agrees that genre films are not as safe financially as casual observers might expect. “Without a theatrical release, there’s not the same protective floor from foreign sales and the domestic DVD markets that there used to be,” says Englebardt. “So if you make a bad or even mediocre genre film, you can take a much bigger loss than most people realise.” However, the recent boom of genrefocused co-production markets — such »

as Fantasia’s Frontieres (which recently expanded to Brussels), Ventana Sur’s Blood Window and Fantastic Fest’s Mercado Fantastico — points to a positive future, according to Paszt. “It’s given a voice for film-makers to pitch their ideas. So for us, being a specialised genre company, having access to a concentration of quality projects makes it invaluable.” (Several of these markets are teaming for midnight market screenings in Cannes under the Blood Window banner.) “We are entering a very exciting time for genre film,” says Stephanie Trepanier, Frontieres market director. “Its core audience has always been strong and active, but it was still considered niche by the common denominators in the industry. Film institutions are opening up to supporting their productions, realising they are films that will easily travel internationally, attract the new generation of film-goers and provide a generally healthier return on investment.” Jinga’s Richards concludes: “Genre films and film-makers have suffered discrimination in the past. With the advent of co-production markets, the genre community is taking matters into its own hands and building a stronger, s more legitimate identity.” n

At the cutting edge Screen talks to the film-makers behind the hottest genre projects screening here in Cannes Caroline Schlüter Bingestam (Den) Producer When Animals Dream Intent on “absolute authenticity”, Jonas Arnby’s feature-length debut When Animals Dream saw a genuine fisherman’s daughter cast in the lead role of Marie who, when she discovers her body is changing, searches for answers concerning her family’s hidden past. “It is a story about a very particular rite of passage for a young woman living in a secluded environment,” says producer Caroline Schlüter Bingestam of Copenhagen based Alphaville Pictures, adding: “The horror genre became the vehicle through which our heroine would complete her terrifying journey.” Shot in the remote fishing village of Agger in Denmark, the film’s crew “never dreamed they would soon be among the selected few at the distinguished Critics’ Week in Cannes”, adds Schlüter Bingestam. Mayra Espinosa Castro (Mex) Producer The Darkness “This is a story about redemption and forgiveness,” explains co-producer Mayra Espinosa Castro of Daniel Castro Zimbron’s psychological thriller The Darkness, the director’s follow-up to his feature debut Táu. The project sees Pablo Zimbron Alva’s Mexico-based Varios Lobos partner with Castro and Jorge Michel Grau’s Velarium Arts and Ozcar Ramirez’s Arte Mecanica. “This project was born by the need to explore the dark side of humanity. The man trying to protect his family becomes the beast that threatens them.” The Darkness is one of the projects selected for this year’s L’Atelier Du Festival. “We are going to Cannes looking for

a co-producer to help us grow the international potential of the project and to consolidate our financial scheme,” says Castro. The Darkness was also pitched at Guadalajara’s Ibero-American Co-Production Meeting this year, but Cannes is the final development place for the project says Castro, adding that it’s also “hopefully the beginning of The Darkness”. Fabrice du Welz (Bel) Director Alleluia Having had his debut feature Calvaire selected for Critics’ Week in 2004, Belgian director Fabrice du Welz returns to Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight with Alleluia. The film sees du Welz reteam with Calvaire’s Laurent Lucas (“my favourite actor”) and is the latest film inspired by real-life killers Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. “I was watching Arturo Ripstein’s Deep Crimson — a great film adapted in Mexico from The Honeymoon Killers story — and I was thinking why not adapt this story in South Belgium just like Ripstein did with Mexico,” says du Welz, who is in no doubt of the boost that Cannes will provide his film. “Cannes is a great worldwide window for a movie, it offers respect and legitimacy to directors and it’s priceless,” he concludes. David Kaplan (US) Producer It Follows The journey of David Robert Mitchell’s second feature It Follows to the screen is an oft-told one, according to producer David Kaplan of New York-based company Animal Kingdom. “It was an uphill battle every step of

the way,” says Kaplan, with one of the odder problems being real-life homicides that resulted in the loss of two locations in Detroit, Michigan. Kaplan is keen to note the support of the film’s other producers, who “collectively shouldered the burden”, and its financiers. “Without their generosity, patience and faith in David’s vision, this film would never have been possible.” Marking Mitchell’s second visit to Cannes (following debut The Myth Of The American Sleepover in 2010), It Follows centres on a 19-year-old girl who finds herself plagued by strange visions. To premiere at Cannes in Critics’ Week is a “dream come true” for Kaplan and the director. “It’s truly an honour to have the opportunity to premiere the film at what is unquestionably the greatest film festival in the world.”

Having spawned, among others, three sequels, a remake, a prequel and a 3D sequel, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre returns to Cannes where it played in Directors’ Fortnight in 1975. With a production budget of $125,000 ($60,000 over budget), Tobe Hooper’s horror classic became a hit on the drivein circuit, and was banned at one time or another in the likes of Finland, the UK, Australia and West Germany. Few horror films have had the same impact on the genre as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Thanks to the new restoration, it is as intense and uncomfortably brilliant as it has ever been.
The 40th anniversary restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre isn’t the first restoration, but it is the only transfer to return to the original 16mm A/B rolls. For six weeks, Todd Wieneke of Dark Sky Films worked with engineer Boris Seagraves of Nolo Digital Film to scan every frame using an Arriscan film scanner. The biggest challenge during the restoration, says Wieneke, were the glue splices: “There were hundreds, if not thousands, of instances where you’d find a splice mark cooked into the middle of a frame.” The other main problem was dirt, some going back to s the original processing. ■

Buzz titles India Bollywood still drives growth at the box office, but India’s studios and indie producers are developing a host of director-driven projects. By Liz Shackleton
ndia’s independent cinema has had its first bona fide domestic and international hit over the past year with Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox, which grossed a respectable $5m at home and also had a successful run in the US and Europe. At the time of writing, the Mumbai-set romantic drama, which premiered in last year’s Cannes Critics’ Week, had taken $2.7m for Sony Pictures Classics in the US, making it the topgrossing foreign-language film of the year in that market. Although India doesn’t have as many films in Cannes selection this year as it had in 2013, Kanu Behl’s Titli has secured a slot in Un Certain Regard and plenty of other festival contenders are in the pipeline.
