Times Square is a major intersection in Manhattan, New York City at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The Times Square area consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan. Formerly Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed after the Times Building (now One Times Square), the former offices of the New York Times, in April 1904. Times Square, sometimes known as the “Crossroads of the World, has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and has become a symbol of its city. Times Square is principally defined by its animated, digital advertisements, called spectaculars. The intersection of Broadway and 42nd Street, at the southeast corner of Times Square, is the Eastern Terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across America.

Piccadilly Circus is a busy plaza in the heart of London at the junction of five major streets: Regent St, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly and Covent St. The Circus was created by John Nash as part of the future King George IV’s plan to connect Carlton House - where the Prince Regent resided - with Regent’s Park. Billboards The creation of the Shaftesbury Avenue in 1885 turned the plaza into a busy traffic junction. This made Piccadilly Circus attractive for advertisers, who installed the first illuminated billboards in London in 1895. For some time the plaza was surrounded by billboards, creating London’s version of Times Square. Piccadilly Circus is now partly pedestrianized and a favourite place for people to congregate before going to the nearby shopping and entertainment areas. Soho, Chinatown, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square are all within walking distance. Probably one of the top 5 London Tourist sites.

A South African Perspective The process of maximising synergy and exposure for clients has confirmed that there is no longer any such thing as “traditional media” or for that matter “above the line”. Communication with consumers has evolved way beyond shouting messages at a compliant and passive customer. Increasingly consumers can edit their personal media consumption to suit their own needs. Reaching them requires an approach that requires a permission – based relationship to evolve. This will become more important as the broadband internet increases across Southern Africa. At the same time both Multinational and Local Advertisers are demanding more price accountability and control.

In 1991 SA had 7 TV channels. In March 2010 over 100 this includes Dstv, Commercial and Non Commercial Channels. Radio estimated to be actively broadcasting at any one time and new print publications being launched annually. The reality is that the proliferation in this media is a result of consumers growing appetite for entertainment and collectively these 3 arenas account for 92% (R68 Billion ZAR). Whilst competition continues to be rife in these categories our focus and aim lays squarely on the 4% (R3.8 Billion ZAR) outdoor sector in which we feel we can compete and have significant point of difference.

The Junction Advertising Medium can be managed from a central point off site. This is done via a server which connects a laptop or PC to the actual unit. For this reason the board requires minimal staff and will be run by the CEO and one technical professional. Other functions such as Accounting and IT support will be outsourced. The unit also comes with a comprehensive Service level Agreement covering ongoing maintenance.

The creation of a vibrant ‘live, eat, sleep, work and play’ CBD was no more than a pipedream. According to figures provided by the Cape Town Partnership (CTP), by the end of 2009 the total number of inner city apartments on the cards will amount to 3 500 with an additional 1 000 new apartments being constructed in Green Point adjacent to the CBD. Surveys indicate that 80 to 90 per cent have been sold to Capetonians, with 75 per cent of these being owner-occupied – either by full-time city dwellers or owned by foreigners and buyers from Johannesburg who prefer to keep their units for their exclusive use either for business or holiday purposes. Once these units have been completed, an additional 8 000 people will be living in the central city – four times that predicted three years ago. And areas further afield are also benefiting as the impact of urban regeneration spreads out along the main roads of Sea Point and Woodstock. Urban renewal does not happen overnight: the City of Christchurch in New Zealand has made inner city rejuvenation a 30-year plan while Brisbane in Australia has a 30- to 40-year plan, with the past 10- to 15-year period showing the most growth. The London Docklands Development Corporation worked for 17 years, from 1981 to 1998, to secure the regeneration of the area. The rebirth of New York began in 1983 and the city acknowledged that it had achieved it primary objectives only by 2000.

8

‘live, eat, sleep, work and play’

To put those timeframes into perspective, the Cape Town Renewal Project officially started in 1999 – eleven years ago. But regardless of whether you look at Cape Town, Denver, or the Docklands – the common thread that drives their success is their commitment to develop cities in which entire communities can live, play and work together; public spaces are as necessary as private ones, and the revitalisation of a city’s cultural heart at street level is as important as the rise of the residential blocks above it.
