May-Health Month The early school years are an exciting time, as children begin to learn about themselves and the world around them. It’s a time when they begin to develop habits that can affect them throughout their lives, especially when it comes to food and fitness. Mazel Day School is committed to helping our children establish healthy habits, by making the month of May a heath awareness month at school. During the whole month of May our teachers will incorporate healthy physical activities and nutritionrelated lessons into our everyday routines. Please join Mazel Parents Association (“MPA”) and your child’s teachers in participating in Health Month this May! These outdoor activities for children provide great ways to have fun as a family. Choose A Side: Team up girls versus boys, let the adults take on the kids, or compete against neighbors for a few friendly rounds of ultimate Frisbee, backyard soccer, football, or any game that keeps everyone moving. Winner can indulge in a healthy victory dinner prepared by the defeated family. Sneak In A Long Stroll: Trick your children into easy exercise by playing a round of mini golf, visiting a botanical garden or taking a trip to the zoo. Outing like these, keep everyone off the couch and on their feet. Touching Ground: Give your child a blown balloon and let him/her bounce it so it doesn’t touch the ground. Each round you can choose

For example, bounce it with your nose, bounce it with your foot or bounce it with your belly, see how many times you can hit the balloon before it touches the ground. Ten-Penny Pickup: Ten-penny pickup is an easy fitness activity for kids that teaches them to use their toes in a whole new way. Once you toss these pennies, the race is on! You will need 10 pennies, small box or bowl, paper, pencil or pen, and a stopwatch or clock. Hold 10 pennies in your hand, and softly scatter them just a few feet in front of your child. See how fast your child can gather all 10 pennies with his/her toes and drop them in the box or bowl. Write down the time. Dance, Dance, Dance: Dancing is an easy fitness activity for kids that’s both creative and fun. Let your kids dance to their favorite music, and see if you’ve got what it takes to shake it with your kids. Teaching your children to develop healthy habits is important to their health and development and can benefit them well into the future.

Interview with Vlad Lipkin Vlad Lipkin was born in Moscow and came to the US in 1990. He graduated from Hillel Yeshivah High School, after which he spent a year in Israel, learning Torah in Yeshivat Hamivtar. He then graduated from Yeshiva University with a degree in Finance and now works as a stock trader. Vlad has two children – Nina, a First-grade student at Mazel Day School and Alexander, who will start Pre-Nursery at Mazel next September. Vlad is also a member of Mazel Day School Board of Trustees. He lives in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Seagate with his wife and children. Q: How did you choose your profession? A: After finishing college, I worked for the Federal Reserve Bank. I have to say that I did not feel satisfied working for “the man”, I wanted to be more independent. That is how I found myself gravitating toward stock trading. A: If you did not choose finance, what other profession was interesting to you? A: Medicine actually. I like helping people, but I was not a big fan of subjects like physics and chemistry and that is why I chose business instead. Q: And what do you like to do in your free time? A: I like to go to Torah classes. Also I like to spend time with friends and read. Q: And what do you like to read? A: I like books about psychology, history, various other subjects. Right now, I am reading “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life” by Dr. Daniel G. Amen. Q: How did you initially find out about Mazel? A: I knew Rabbi and Mrs. Okonov before my daughter went to Mazel and knew the level of their commitment to ensuring a high quality of education. Additionally, our friends have children here and we’ve heard rave reviews from them. We have actually lived in Manhattan until a little over a year ago and wanted to secure a school spot
before moving to Brooklyn. Q: Why did you choose Mazel for your children? A: First of all, it was of paramount importance to us to provide our children with a Jewish education, so public school was not an option we considered. Nina was in a Jewish Pre-K program and we wanted to continue having her in a Jewish school. Another extremely important reason was that, unlike a lot of other schools, Mazel was initially organized by Russian-Jewish parents who wanted to provide for their children an excellent education. So, every aspect of this school was engineered with direct input from very loving, highly educated and involved parents. This to me is critical. Now, having had a child here for over a year, I can add several more observations. First, my daughter really enjoys coming here every day. She literally cries on weekends, because there is no school. Every time she has to stay home because of illness, she becomes very upset. Second, I have observed that teachers absolutely love children that are entrusted to them and are very passionate about teaching. Third, the school is focused on the overall development of a child as a person. Attention is given to arts and music so that children are placed in an overall pleasant and balanced environment. The very small class sizes ensure that all children receive individual 4
Parent Talk PA RENT I NTE RVIE W attention. And, finally (but, certainly, not least), Mazel has an incredibly strong secular curriculum that easily outperforms even the best public schools. Q: Why did you decide to join the Board of Trustees? A: When I saw how much my daughter loved this school, I wanted to give something back. I felt that both my business experience and my experience with Jewish education could be used to make it even better than it already was, help it expand and grow. Also, at that time, I had more free time on my hands and I thought to myself “What better use to make of it than to invest it in education of Jewish children?” Q: What do you think is an important quality for a school to have? A: All else aside, it is important that the school be

When kids are in a good place where they enjoy being, they will retain what knowledge they have received much more effectively and build the love for learning for the rest of their lives. That to me is priceless. Q: Do you have any words of advice for other parents? A: Yes. Mazel is a very small school. Because of the small size, all the children and parents at Mazel are part of a fairly close-knit family. It is a wellknown fact that the more one gives of oneself to something the more one loves that to which he gives. I believe that if the parents start giving more of their time, effort and love to our school, the more they will understand and appreciate the school and the more impact they will have on their children’s education.

What parent wouldn’t want their child to be happy, healthy and lively? I can’t think of any. Today, we are going to focus on how to help your children eat properly and maintain a healthy weight. There is nothing better you can do for your child than to get them on the right track to a healthy lifestyle! Added bonus—by making sure to keep your kids rosy-cheeked, you can also use this as a chance to start bettering your own eating habits. What parent wouldn’t want their child to be happy, healthy and lively? I can’t think of any. Today, we are going to focus on how to help your children eat properly and maintain a healthy weight. There is nothing better you can do for your child than to get them on the right track to a healthy lifestyle! Added bonus—by making sure to keep your kids rosy-cheeked, you can also use this as a chance to start bettering your own eating habits.
Healthy Eating Habits Healthy eating habits started early in children can remain with them for lifetime. Here are a few tips you can replace your child’s unhealthy eating habits: • Teach your child to stop eating when they are full, not to clean their plate • Put a variety of foods on their (and your) plates. Different colored fruits and veggies can be fun—and if you don’t get your children hooked on certain greens like broccoli early, there is little hope that they will eat it in their teen years • Never allow them to skip breakfast. Skipping meals in general isn’t good, but as we all know, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” so make sure they get some nutritious, filling food to start their day off right • Do not let you kids watch TV while eating—you will eat faster than usual when your attention is on something other than your meal or snack
• For smaller children, start with small portions and get them seconds if they are still hungry. For older kids, allow them to get their own portions and if they can’t finish all their food, it is a good lesson to know to get smaller portions next time. • If your child does something good, DO NOT use food or candy as a reward. That is a terrible habit, instead, reward your child by delaying bedtime by half an hour, reading an extra bedtime story; or for older kids, reward with a small amount of money or say, points that will add up to a new toy • Limit fast-food trips. These meals won’t be as nutritious as the meals you prepare at home. If you enforce these tips, your children will learn the right way to eat and it will stick with them. Also, like I said earlier, you and any other adult in the household can benefit from these changes as well. These tips apply when feeding nutritious meals of course, but make them fun, colorful and interactive if possible. For example, have baby carrots as a snack and pretend to be Bugs Bunny or cut sandwiches into a heart shape and have apple slices as the eyebrows. Use the imagination of a child—the healthy way. 6
Nutrition Tips H EA LTHY KIDS = H APPY PARE N TS Weight Management There are different measures to take depending on whether your child is at a normal weight and you simply want them to stay that way or if your child is overweight and you want them to slim down. For the kids who simply need to maintain their weight, just keep them active regularly— playing on a sports team is a great, bringing them with you as you walk the dog each day, (if you don’t have a dog, then have a family walk) or getting them involved in more physically active chores. The preceding suggestions are good for kids who are overweight too, as they need to get in the habit or being more active. For those children, maybe have them attend a summer camp every year that focuses on lifestyle changes, weight management and healthy

The quinoa seed is high in protein, calcium and iron, a relatively good source of vitamin E and several of the B vitamins. eating. Limiting the amount of sugar they consume can help tremendously—switching to water instead of soda and juices is a start. Make sure to stock your home with only nutritious snacks so that when your child gets older, they have no choice but to eat healthy! Most importantly, try to get your kids involved in physical activity from an early age so it is a natural part of their lives. Also, getting them into healthy eating habits will help them for life. The protein in quinoa is considered to be almost complete protein due to the presence of 8 essential amino acids. Quinoa also contains albumen, a protein that is found in egg whites, blood serum, and many plant and animal tissues. The seeds are gluten-free which makes this a nutritious and flavorful alternative grain for those with gluten sensitivity. Quinoa would be a worthy addition to anyone’s diet, supplying variety as well as good nutrition. Did I mention it’s also a great source of fiber?
CUMCUMBER SALAD AND QUINOA: INGREDIENTS: Organic should be your first choice. 1 cucumber, 1 box of cherry tomatoes, 1 jalapeno (1/2 if you don’t like too much heat), 1/2 red onion, 2 cups of quinoa
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cucumber Salad—chop all ingredients and mix. 2. Cook 2 cups of quinoa in vegetable broth (follow directions) put in the fridge to cool. When it’s completely chilled, mix into your cucumber salad.

SPANISH QUINOA (QUICK & EASY): INGREDIENTS: 2 Cups of Quinoa, 1 Can of Ro-tel Tomato and Chilis (mild or hot), 1 1/4 of organic chicken broth, 1 tsp of Olive Oil
INSTRUCTIONS: Follow directions on back of quinoa package. 1 cup of Quinoa calls for 1 1/4 cup of water (note: Ro-tel tomato and chilis makes up the additional liquid it would call for 2 cups of quinoa empty the whole can juice and all). Great side for any of your favorite Low GI Mexican or Spanish dishes
PESTO QUINOA: INGREDIENTS: 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed, 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese, 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts (I personally do not add nuts), 3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced, Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS: Follow directions on the back of the bag using organic vegetable broth in place of water. Use the pesto as a topper for grilled fish
ARRABIATA QUINOA: INGREDIENTS: 1 peeled medium-sized yellow onion, chopped, 1/4 cup olive oil, 4 cloves of garlic minced, 2 pounds very ripe, fresh tomatoes; OR 2 pounds canned stewed tomatoes, 1 tbsp (or to taste) hot red pepper flakes, Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 1 tablespoon Fresh Basil, 2 Cups of Quinoa
INSTRUCTIONS: If you are using canned tomatoes, you will need to measure the liquid to determine how much chicken broth to add. If you are using fresh tomatoes, you will need to use approximately 2 1/4 cups of chicken broth. Add all ingredients into sauce pan. Bring to a boil. Add quinoa turn heat to low. Normal cook time for quinoa is roughly 20 minutes. This will take approximately double the time. Top with some grilled chicken or fish!

Interview with Morah Katherine Buckell Morah Katherine originally hails from Australia, from a small rural town of Ky Valley. She studied at Victorian College of the Arts, graduating with a degree in Drums and Improvisation, as well as an advanced degree in Remedial Massage Therapy. She is a folk singer and songwriter and has lived in Israel for three years before settling in NYC. Q: How did you start teaching? A: When I was in High School, I taught guitar in school camps and the music store where I worked after classes. The youngest student I had at that time was 8 years old. When I lived in Israel, I was mostly performing music, but I ran a drumming workshop as well. I have always preferred working with younger kids. I have also taught at the Imaginary Learning Center at the VA Medical Center in New York for a year. Q: How did you learn about Mazel Day School? A: An Israeli friend of mine introduced me to Dan Aran, who is a music teacher at Mazel and he told me a great deal about this school and that they are looking for an additional music teacher. He suggested that I apply for the position. As I have always liked working with children, I agreed. Q: How do you find Mazel day School? A: I think it is a very special place. The overall environment here is designed to be very nurturing for the child. It seems that particular attention is paid to developing emotional intelligence as well as academic. And because children here have a good emotional experience, they retain what they are taught to a much greater extent. It is generally difficult to teach children theory in a fun way, but it has been achieved here. For example, in my classes, I have been teaching children some basic aspects of song-writing. This involves understanding how a song is put together, how lyrics and music go together, how music theory and song relate and historical component
of lyric that stems from poetry. As part of that, I have been teaching kids some of the traditional Australian songs and poems that I grew up with, and lately, I have been incorporating some Israeli songs as well. From this I am integrating musical theory in a creative practical way while at the same time children are learning about different cultures and poetry. Q: What do you like to do in your free time? A: I love exercising, so I go to the gym a lot. I also love to play tennis. In addition, I love to go see different styles of music that New York has to offer. This diversity is what drew me here in the first place. I continue to play and write music. In fact, I have recently recorded a new CD and have started my national radio promotion for it. I also love to read. Mostly, I like to read fiction, although, recently I have gotten into reading National Geographic Magazine. One of my recent reads is “The Help”; I also love books by Isabel Carmody, I find her to be a beautiful author. Q: What do you think is important in education? A: Balance. I think it is very important not to make the school environment too rigidly academic, as that can really decrease children’s love of learning. The so-called “non-academic” subjects actually 9
Teacher Talk T EACHER INTE RVIE W involve a highly theoretical component; they strengthen a child’s memory, as well as provide emotional relief (something that, in my opinion, is extremely important to children’s emotional wellbeing). What I love about Mazel Day School is that this need is taken into account. Another important point is that children need to learn important social skills in school, and these skills are often lost when school becomes too academic. Playing in an orchestra or playing sports requires kids to learn to work together; these skills are then very helpful in an academic setting.

Healthy snacks “crafts”

FRUIT CAKE: Consider adding this cake to your dessert table INGREDIENTS:
Watermelon, other fresh fruits, such as mellon balls, kiwi slices, blueberries, strawberries
Start by slicing the watermelon into wedges and then arrange them in a stack of circles (rinds facing out) to create a cake shape. Decorate the cake with the other fruits.
GRAPEFRUIT FACES: These faces are a good way to slip more vitamins into your child’s diet. INGREDIENTS:
Grapefruit, grapes or raisins (for hair & eyes), cherry for nose, banana (for mouth)
1. Cut a circle from the grapefruit. 2. Arrange grape clusters around the top for hair. 3. Add grape or raisin eyes, a cherry nose and a big grin made of bananas.
YELLOW PEPPER SUN: Your child can brighten up his/her plate with this vegetable sun. INGREDIENTS:
Yellow pepper and carrot
1. Cut circles for the sun from the carrot and strips from the pepper for the rays. 2. Arrange in a shape of the sun.
Short Story “ O L D MAN S H LO MO ” It’s hard to think of Wall Street as being symbolized by anything other than the New York Stock Exchange, located at the west end of the world-famous financial district. Tourists, who come to New York will visit this Mecca of finance and inevitably grin for pictures, imagining the river of dollars flowing through this iconic building in the background. What few people realize however is that the building to the right of the New York Stock Exchange has played a much greater significance, at least politically, in the history of America. Located at 26 Wall Street, the structure known as Federal Hall is the site where George Washington was sworn in to be America’s first president and the Bill of Rights was passed into law.
By Gennady Favel These days, Federal Hall has been relegated to housing special museum exhibitions and occasionally, as a stop for politicians looking for a symbolic photo-op at a historic landmark. To the locals, Federal Hall is best known for its majestic steps where on a sunny day employees of the exchange will plop themselves during afternoon lunch. Today the choice spot on the steps in the shadow of the statue of George Washington, belonged to the five young traders from the prestigious firm Green Stone Capital Group. Each of the five wore a green company jacket with the name of their firm and a special number indicating that they were authorized to trade on their firm’s behalf on the floor of the stock exchange. The five earned their job and their jacket by proving to their employer
Short Story “ O L D MAN SH LOMO ” that they were willing to do whatever was necessary to represent the firm’s best interest in a high pressure, hugely competitive trading environment. None of the five were rich by Wall Street standards, but working at the exchange, surrounded by the constant flow of capital, each of these men felt as if they were in the eye of a storm and that the rain of financial wealth will hit them in only in a matter of time. As is typical for their profession these guys all graduated from prestigious North East universities. Their names were David, Adam, Josh, Patrick and Mark. Much like they did on any other day the guys ate their lunches and talked about what most men of that age group talk about: women, cars, money, and the attainment of all three. As usual Adam insisted that money, which will help with attainment of the other two commodities, was the key. Patrick, the hopeless romantic insisted that a good woman should be found before the man makes his millions, otherwise “how is one to know if she is after him or just his wealth.” In all the years of them being friends the issue had yet to be settled. While they were debating, an old man slowly walked passed Federal Hall. Dressed in a long black coat, black pants, black shoes and a black hat that covered his gray hair, the man was obviously an orthodox Jew. He walked slowly, deep in his thoughts, perhaps reciting a memorized prayer in his head. He reached into his pocket and while trying to extract whatever it was he was after, a single penny fell out of his pocket and rolled down the pavement hitting the step right in front of Adam, where it came to a stop, tails-side up. The old man stopped, located the penny on
By Gennady Favel the pavement and slowly walked over, carefully bending down to pick it up. Noticing this scene the five guys giggled. Here in front of them was the embodiment of every fret house and bar room joke about Jews and their stereotypically penny-pinching ways. The guys did not think that their laughter was offensive. David, Adam and Josh were Jews themselves, and Patrick and Mark had gone to enough barmitzvahs and Jewish wedding that they felt nothing inappropriate in joining their Jewish friends in the harmless snickering. The old man picked up his penny and noticing the five men laughing at him turned to address them. “Why did you laugh at me when I picked up my money?” he inquired without a hint of anger. “I am sorry” replied David. “We didn’t mean anything by it. I guess it’s just funny that someone of your age would go through all that trouble just to pick up a penny.” “So you think I should let other people pick up and keep my money?” the old man asked. David shrugged, indicating indifference. “Would you leave money on the street?” the old man asked turning to Mark. “If it was a penny, I would” Mark answered. The rest of the guys nodded in agreement. “So none of you recognize the value of a penny?” the old man asked. “I’ll have you know that this penny I will grow into a small fortune, I can even do it while sitting right here on these steps.”
Short Story “ O L D MAN SH LOMO ” “The money is made in there not here” Josh said laughing and pointing to the stock exchange. “Don’t believe me?” the old man continued “okay, I will bet each of you a hundred dollars that in the next hour I can make a bundle with this penny just by sitting with you on these steps. The guys looked at each other with puzzled looks. Was the old man crazy they thought, and would he really pay up when he lost the bet? They looked at their watches. The lunch break was almost over, but it was the slow period of the day, their assistant who remained on the trading floor could handle the small volume of orders that might come through. The guys decided to stay. Not for the money, but for the strange story they would be able to tell when they got back to work. An agreement was a reached, and the old man, content with the details of the bet, set down next to the guys. “My name is Shlomo” the old man said cheerfully, and as old man have a habit of doing Shlomo started chatting about his ungrateful kids who didn’t visit him enough, his grandchildren who he believed were not being raised properly, and his wife to whom he had been married for over 50 years and who out of concern for his health did not allow him a second portion of cake even on the high holidays. The guys listened and waited for Shlomo to do something, anything, in order to transform his penny into a sizable sum. But Shlomo seemed to have forgotten about the bet. Oblivious to the time, Shlomo continued with his stories mentioning several times that a second portion of cake was not going to kill him and that tonight he was going to put his foot down on

The guys patiently listened but when an hour had passed David jumped up from the step and announced that the time was up. “One hour is up” David proclaimed, “where is your fortune?” ”It passed already? Time sure does fly, quickly these days.” Shlomo replied. “I suppose I should give you each one hundred dollars.” The guys looked at each other. Taking money from an eccentric old man was not something any of them wanted to do. “Forget it Shlomo” Mark said, “We don’t want to take your money. But why in the world would you make this bet, you must have known that you would lose?” Shlomo slowly rose from the step he was sitting on. He took out his wallet to count out the money. “What makes you think I lost?” Shlomo asked. “The money I am giving is charity more than anything else.” The guys looked puzzled. “So where is the fortune you made, where is the money?” Josh asked mockingly. Shlomo smiled. “You guys work for Green Stone Capital Group, right?’ Shlomo said pointing to their green company jackets. The guys nodded. “And your firm has a large stake in United Oceans Petroleum stock?” Shlomo continued. 13

His only concern was that your company would sell before he could. With the five of you here, listening to my stories for an hour, I doubt that your junior clerk was able to handle the trading volume all by himself.” Shlomo

Gennady immigrated to the U.S from Odessa, Ukraine in the late 1980s when he was 9 years old in order pursue his life’s dream of being a taxi driver and drink outlandish amounts of Coca-Cola. While his Coca-Cola dream became a reality, his taxi driver fantasy was sabotaged by his parents who made him go to school and later to college. After graduating Baruch College with a degree in finance and investments Gennady went on to work in the hedge fund industry where

for the past eight years he has been Head of Trading for two successful hedge funds. In 2008 Gennady published his book The Stock Market Philosopher, aiming to debunk some of the widely believed myths about trading and investing. Gennady has also tried his hand at screenwriting and in 2010 his first teleplay was produced into a sitcom pilot by an independent film producer. He is still waiting for his first Golden Globe. Gennady lives in Sheepshead Bay with his wife Yelena and their daughter Mariella. After a long search to find the right preschool for Mariella and almost giving up, Gennady and Yelena were ecstatic to find Mazel Day School, a place they both agreed would be perfect for Mariella. These days Gennady enjoys spending more time with his family, writing, and searching for new business ventures. Listen...can you hear it? It’s the familiar jingle of the ice cream truck coming down the street carrying every kid’s favorite candy and ice cream flavors. Now suppose your child is with his pals, that truck pulls up and a young, friendly driver steps out. “Hi kids!, he says. “Want an ice cream? I bet I have your favorite. Come look!,” he says. Then he slides open the window to reveal an enticing array of choices. Your child may be a bit cautious, but the driver opens the door and invites him or her to step in. “You can’t see all the selections from out there. Look what I have inside. I’m giving them out free today,” he says. Do I have your radar up? After all, you know that child predators prey on kids vulnerabilities and a free ice cream is a hard for a kid to resist. But you’ve taught your kid about “stranger danger,” and even warned your son or daughter about those ploys. So here’s my question: Would your child get inside that truck and fall for that trap? Are you really sure? I’d advise you to not be so quick to say: “My kid would never...” despite all your lectures and safety drills. The reality is most kids are vulnerable to predator tactics and tricks, especially when the enticer appears younger and friendly. The pull of negative peer pressure often makes it even harder for kids to apply our stranger safety lessons we assume we so carefully taught and learned. Dateline producers wanted to find out just how school-aged kids respond to the ice cream truck scenario. Do most kids get into that truck or turn down the ploy and walk away? They set up hidden cameras, and had a young actor portray the friendly ice cream man and drive up to kids while their parents watched in anticipation. The result: almost every child got inside that truck much to their parents’ surprise – and horror. (That segment on the series, “My kid
would never...” aired last Sunday.) Dateline producers then asked me to review the tapes and provide tips for a more effective way to teach kids stranger safety. Here are those crucial tips I offered on the segment as well as today on the live Dateline web chat with Natalie Morales.
3 Steps To Teaching Stranger Safety STEP 1: EMPOWER YOUR CHILD TO SAY “NO!” If you want your kid to stand up for herself, don’t get in the habit of speaking for her or rescuing. Doing so can rob a child from developing the very skills she needs to look and sound determined. Instead, find opportunities for child to practice using strong body language and a firm voice so she can learn to defend himself. Here are a few pointers: Give Permission to Say “NO”: Studies show that kids under the age nine rarely say “No” to a sexual offender because they were told “to obey adults.” So give permission for your child to yell NO. “If someone tries to touch you in places your bathing suit covers, makes you feel at all afraid or uncomfortable, say “NO! You will not be in trouble.” “If someone tells you to do something you know is not right like get in an ice cream truck say “NO!”

Teach: “Drop, Holler, and Run.” Teach your child that if he ever needs to get away quickly, he should drop whatever he is carrying, holler, and run. If possible, he should run to an adult (ideally a woman with children) screaming, “Help! This isn’t my dad!” If grabbed, he should hold on to anything (such as his bicycle handles or car door) holler, and kick an abductor in the groin or eyes. Dropping to the ground and kicking-tantrum style-makes it more difficult to be picked up. Stress: “I’ll never be upset if you hurts someone if you’re trying to protect yourself.” STEP 2. HELP YOUR CHILD RECOGNIZE SUSPICIOUS ADULT BEHAVIOR Instead of scaring (and possibly even confusing) your kids with the “Stranger = Danger” approach, a more effective strategy is teaching kids to recognize suspicious adult scenarios and behaviors. Teach: “Use your gut instinct.” A “fear factor” can be a powerful in keeping kids safe, but often isn’t used because we fail to help our kids learn theirs. Teach your child that if she ever feels he could be in danger, to use that fear instinct and leave immediately. You’ll support her...no matter what! Teach 9-1-1. Make sure your child knows her first and last name, your first and last name, phone number, and address. Program your phone so your child can reach you and dial 9-1-1 instantly. Put a sticker on the “0.” Then teach how to dial “operator” to reverse charges, so she can call you from any phone anywhere. Establish a family secret code. Choose a memorable code like “Geronimo,” to give only to family members or trusted individuals responsible for your kids in your absence. Then stress: “Never leave with anyone who can’t say our family’s secret code.” Create a texted code (like “111” or “123”) to be used by the child to contact you if in danger. It recently saved a California teen from abduction.
What follows are a few adult behaviors kids should be aware and leery of. These points are not designed for one discussion, but topics for numerous shorter chats over the years with your kids. Talk about each one in the context of your child’s age and stage and then watch how your child responds. It may help you recognize your son or daughter’s vulnerability (such as “you can have a puppy!”) so you can discuss the issue more. Asking for help: “I need help finding my child. Please help me!” “Can you help me look for my puppy?” Emphasize that your child can always ask a stranger for help, but a stranger does not ask kids for help. Offering treats: “Would you like some candy?” “I have a skateboard in my car. Would you like it?” “I’ll let you have one of my kittens (or pet my cat), if you will sit on my lap and watch this video.” Feigning an emergency: “Hurry! Your mom was in an accident. I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Reality Check T EACHI NG KIDS STRANG E R SAFE T Y Flaunting authority: “I think you’re the kid who hurt my son. Come with me and we’ll go find your parents.” Pretending to be an official: “I’m with the F.B.I. and this is my badge. You must come.” (Tell your child to call you ASAP to verify the situation. Faking friendship. “I’m an old friend of your dad’s. He asked me to come over. Can you take me to your house?” Keeping a “secret.” Predators often try to make kids promise to keep the abuse a secret. Teach your child: “If any adult asks you to keep an uncomfortable secret, tell me.” You might say: “It’s okay to not keep a secret even if you promised an adult.” Needing personal information: “What’s your address? If you give it to me, I’ll send you a toy.” “I need your phone number so I can contact your parent.” Stress to your child: “Do NOT give out personal information such as your name, address, phone number, school, parents name, social security number, credit card number.” Then teach: “An adult does not ask a child for personal information. They ask the child’s parent.” (An exception is the child’s school). Requiring kids to open the door.” Stress repeatedly to never open the door to someone who is not an immediate family member. Explain that anyone who is a friend will understand your rule and not mind waiting. Stress: “Don’t say anything-find a parent!” If you’re not home, tell your child to phone you from a backroom or 9-1-1 if in danger. These points are not designed for one discussion, but topics for numerous shorter chats over the years with your kids. The secret is bringing up the topic in a relaxed way just as you discuss earthquakes, pool safety and using cross walks and the best time to start those talks is when our kids are young! You are laying the groundwork to not only prevent abuse but also get the crucial help a child might need just in case. The key for kids to learn is: “Adults should not trick kids to

do anything they don’t feel comfortable doing.” You might brainstorm with your child which adults he or she could turn to for help in each situation if you’re not around (for instance, in your neighborhood or school): “What if that person didn’t help or wasn’t there?” or “Who could you go to for help?” STEP 3: REHEARSE STRANGER SAFETY SKILLS REPEATEDLY Keep in mind that the best way to teach any skill is to show what it looks like, and then practice over and over until the child can use the safety skill without you. Look for fun ways to rehearse the skill in context. If you see a child using “assertive” skills, point it out. While there are no guarantees for our children’s well being, research shows we can teach a few crucial safety basics that may help them be less likely to be harmed. Though you may fear that talking about frightening issue such as kidnapping will scare the pants off your kids, not doing so is a mistake. The secret is to bring up the topic in relaxed way just as you discuss fire and pool safety. Just consider your child’s age, developmental level and the safety skills he needs at that point in his life. Statistics show that the vast majority of child abductors are someone the child personally knows. In fact, research shows that 85 percent of kids found alive after being abducted did not consider their kidnapper to be a stranger, which is all the more reason to teach different types of safety tips. Above all, remind your son or daughter that you are there whatever the situation may be, and you love him or her no matter what. Now, go practice those skills!
