We had a ton of fun at each of our photo shoot locations and thank SALA studio, Coba Cocina and Uncle Maddio’s Pizza for letting us take over their space and time these past couple of months. Like always, this Spring KRNL 2016 was made and produced by creative and motivated UK Kentucky Kernel students. I invite you to get involved as a model, writer, photographer, designer, stylist or advertising representative by emailing krnlfashion@kykernel.com. LOUISVILLE

By Daria Smith

All the buzz about traveling to Panama City Beach (P.C.B.) or any other beach activity has started as Spring Break is almost upon us. However, for some of us, Lexington is where we will be spending our much-needed break. And, that’s “A-Okay,” because you don’t always need sand and salt water to have an awesome vacation. So, for those of you who think you’ll be bored staying in Kentucky this year, we’ve come up with a few places and fun events that won’t cost more than one tank of gas to get to.

Just an hour and a half away, go for a relaxing day visit to Louisville’s Waterfront Park and walk across the Big Four Bridge into Indiana. Once you can proudly say you “walked from one state to another,” head on over to Mussels and Burgers and satisfy your traveler’s appetite.

MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK

WWW.LOUISVILLEWATERFRONT.COM WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/MUSSELBURGERBAR

Visit one of the wonders of the South, but don’t be fooled — the Cave isn’t the only thing to see. Visit Frozen Niagra, go kayaking, be awed by the Cathedral Domes, and so much more.

CINCINNATI

About the same travel time as Louisville, head north to “Cincy,” and check out the Cincinnati Union Terminal, a museum of museums in a train station. Grab a burger for dinner at Terry’s Turf Club, whose food is so good they were featured on the show Diners, Drive ins and Dives. WWW.CINCYMUSEUM.ORG

For more information on certain events visit: www.visitlex.com

DISNEY ON ICE AND LEXINGTON COMIC & TOY CONVENTION For all you kids at heart, these two events are perfect if you’re staying in LexVegas. Disney on Ice comes to Lexington with the production “Treasure Trove,” which will play from March 10 until March 13. Afterward be sure to stop by Rupp Arena to enjoy the company of fellow Justice League or Avengers fans at the Lexington Comic & Toy Convention, showing March 10 until March 13. WWW.DISNEYONICE.COM WWW.LEXINGTONCOMICCON.COM

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY PARADE Craving a good party? It’s your lucky break! St. Patrick’s Day just happens to be during Spring Break this year and Lexington sure knows how to celebrate. On March 12, start off your week off right with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Main Street, downtown. WWW.LEXINGTONSTPATSPARADE.ORG WWW.LEXINGTONKY.GOV

RED RIVER GORGE

SHAKER VILLAGE & BURKE’S BAKERY

Take a day trip and visit Red River Gorge. Go canoeing, hiking and sightseeing for an afternoon. On the way home, do yourself a favor and stop by Miguel’s Pizza for a slice or two.

With over 3,000 acres to explore, drive to Harrodsburg and take in the fresh air and history at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. On your way to Shakertown, make sure to stop in Danville for a few cookies and treats from Burke’s Bakery.

KENTUCKY HORSE PARK

You can never ride a horse too many times, not here in Kentucky. Go to the Horse Park, ride a horse, and learn some Jeopardy-like facts about equine culture. WWW.KYHORSEPARK.COM/

BREAKOUT GAMES

For a fun night out in Lexington, try Breakout Games, a series of new interactive mind-bending simulations to challenge your wits and skills. Stop in Locals after for a bite to eat and celebrate your victory over the challenge. BREAKOUTLEXINGTON.COM/ LOCALSLEX.COM

And there’s plenty more to do besides the options listed above. So don’t get discouraged if you can’t go to some kind of coast this spring. You can still have an epic Spring Break right here in the heart of Kentucky!

Elyssa with Bennie Sargent - UK Western Equestrian Team coach

UK Western Equestrian Team

KRNL Student profile

ELYSSA SMITH

PHOTO

Michael Reaves

{on horses & style} By Sam Rogers

W

Elyssa Smith is a senior integrated strategic communication major and sociology minor at UK, and she’s originally from Athens, Ohio. She has been riding horses since she was eight years old and is a member of UK’s western equestrian team. In her spare time, Elyssa loves to travel and read. On the weekends, you can find her watching sports or movies. Last summer, she had the opportunity to visit South Africa through a Study Abroad program. After graduation, Elyssa hopes to work in advertising.

You’re a member of the equestrian team; why did you decide to join? I rode on the high school equestrian team before I came to UK, and I just wanted to continue to ride, but not bring my horse down, so the team was the perfect deal for me.

plenty of T-shirts and sweatshirts to ride in. What about when it comes to horse shows and other tournaments? To show, we wear black button-ups, black pants, black chaps, black cowboy hats and UK blue scarves.

What are five things you can’t live without? Why? My planner, because I’m super forgetful and would lose my mind without it. Books since I love to read. Sweaters or sweatshirts, because I’m always cold. And a pen and paper to make lists, again to keep me organized.

Is “western” riding a division of the equestrian team? What makes it different? Do you like this style better than others? Here at UK, we have the Western team, English team, Saddle Seat team and Rodeo team. We are most closely associated with the English team and we host our shows together. The biggest differences are in the way the horses move, which affects the way we ride. My favorite is definitely Western.

How would you describe your personal style? Dressy, but laid back.

Who would you invite dead or alive to a dinner party? Why? Justin Bieber, just because I love him.

What’s one thing you wish students at UK knew about the equestrian team or about horses in general? Not everyone who rides horses races or jumps. What do you typically wear to equestrian team practice/to ride horses? To practice, we wear jeans and boots. We also order team gear every year, so we have

What are your top three style basics? Jeans, boots and plain-colored long sleeves. What is your go-to outfit for Keeneland season? A cute dress with a sweater, since I’m always cold. What is the fashion trend you like the most? Why? Long necklaces. I feel like most of my clothes are pretty plain and putting on a long necklace can add a lot to an outfit. What trend would you like to see die out and why? Shoes with ankle straps, only because I look terrible in them.

What’s your most treasured possession and why? I’m kind of a hoarder, so I have a lot of treasured possessions, but I would say my collection of cards. My family is pretty spread out and we send cards for almost every occasion. I keep them all because they’re more special than just a text or email. They’re a reminder that someone took the time to think of me and send me something via good old-fashioned snail mail. What’s your favorite quote? “Have courage through love and war.” Any last notes about fashion, in general? I guess just that confidence is a big part of fashion. If you feel good, you’ll look good and I think that’s important.
