INTRODUCTION I live and work in a wonderful valley in northwest Norfolk, an area rather grandly known as the Royal Coast. Our estate borders on the Royal Sandringham Estate, the country home and traditional Christmas retreat of HRH Queen Elizabeth II and her family. Recently we were delighted to welcome yet more royal neighbours; the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have refurbished Anmer Hall, which is even closer to us than Sandringham House. Very British Baby Knits has been designed with the new generation of royal children very much in mind. Being a mother of six, stepmother of two, grandmother of nine and step-grandmother of ten, I count myself an expert in the grandmother world, and more importantly a veteran in the design of baby clothes. I’ve been designing small person’s knitwear for a very long time – no design of mine will have to be squeezed over a baby’s head and no baby will have to be stripped almost naked to facilitate a nappy change. My baby knitwear designs have travelled far – from angel tops to tank tops, from cot blankets to sleep-bags, from knitted lace to contemporary chunky – a journey that I have enjoyed every stitch of the way. Any Royal watcher will be in awe of the knitwear sported by the very young Royals – such style, such finish, so classic, so cute and so unobtainable – until now. My new collection is based unashamedly on classic British design, never boring, never outdated, never fussy, with the added bonus that the designs are quick and easy to knit. I hope you enjoy knitting my designs for your own ‘prince’ or ‘princess’. 8 9

The Collections

Anmer Balmoral Highgrove Sandringham Windsor 10

Anmer Anmer Hall, North West Norfolk, is the country home of the Duchess of Cambridge and two future Kings, Prince William and the adorable Prince George. Built of brick, local carrstone and tile, it has graceful arched windows and sits in glorious countryside. The Anmer collection is typically Catherine – Duchess of Cambridge’s style; classic, not ‘fussy’ and easy to wear but, at the same time modern and trendy. The blue and clay are much favoured colours for the blue-eyed Prince George. SIZES NOTE: Up to 3(3–6:6–9:9–12) months If knitting more than one design the yarn quantities will be reduced for each item, for YARN instance the booties take less than a quarter of a Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK (double knitting) yarn in ball of each colour so could easily be knitted Sky 676 and Clay 679 from leftovers.

Balmoral Balmoral Castle was built for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert around 1854 and is very much in the ‘Scottish’ castle style. Its towers and castellations look as though they have stepped straight out of a child’s fairy story. Victoria and Albert’s romance blossomed here and the castle is still the Royal family’s private home; this is where they stay for up to two months every autumn, when the surrounding landscape is filled with soft, mellow colours. The Balmoral collection is unashamedly romantic, with a smattering of tiny flowers and colours that blend with the prolific Scottish heathers that surround the castle. This is a truly pretty collection. Highgrove

Highgrove House near Tetbury, Gloucestershire is the home of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Charles has for many years been a leading light in organic farming and ethically sound living. The Highgrove collection is knitted in pure new wool and echoes the trend for natural fibres. The cream and grey remind us of natural, undyed fleece and the use of garter stitch evokes thoughts of country textures. SIZES NOTE: Up to 3(3–6:6–9:9–12) months If knitting more than one design the yarn quantities will be reduced for each item, for YARN instance the booties take less than a quarter of a Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK (double knitting) yarn in ball of each colour so could easily be knitted Straw 671 and Dawn 672 from leftovers.

Sandringham Sandringham House, once described as ‘the most comfortable house in England’

was bought for Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward V11 by his mother, Queen Victoria, in the 1860s. King George V called it ‘the place he loved most in all the world’ and it is the home that our Queen and the Royal family choose at which to spend every Christmas. Sandringham House is built of local carrstone, grey tile, and stone. The Sandringham collection is cuddly and warm with interesting stripes that mimic the ploughed fields of Norfolk and take up the colours of the house, with an added splash of gold to celebrate the yearly appearance of the wild golden asphodel which grows on the estate. Windsor Windsor Castle is the official residence of the Queen and the largest occupied castle in the world. It has been a royal home and fortress for over 900 years. It is here that the Queen spends her weekends; she takes up official residence over Easter and for a week in June for the service of the Order of the Garter. The Windsor collection was inspired by this amazing castle and the Order of the Garter: the twisted cable on the sweater symbolises eternal chivalry and the smart royal blue cardigan speaks of sobriety and honour. Acknowledgements First of all, a big thank you to Sharon Brant for that first visit to my studio and Sharon Northcott for setting the ball (or maybe that should read yarn) rolling. Thanks also to all the Brant family, especially Darren and Georgina; I certainly couldn’t have done it without you! Another big thank you to my test knitters; Ann Cowling, Chris Holmes, Jacqui Daly, Elizabeth Wilson and Tina Johnson. And my superb models, William, Teo and Maddie. Thanks also to Marilyn Wilson for translating my eclectic pattern style. And last but by no means least, a huge thank you to Charlie Campbell – my son, my IT expert, my cheerer-upper and my friend. Quail Publishing would also like to thank Search Press and their team, Katie French, Martin de la Bédoyère and Daniel Conway, for making this title possible. Susan Campbell for her devotion to the project and wonderful design work. Jesse Wilde for his wonderful photographs and patience throughout the photo shoot. Katie Hardwicke for her thorough editing.
