Mayfield Junior School, a Catholic independent school founded and sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, implements the philosophy of the Holy Child Schools which is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person. We are committed to the religious and educational development of each child and to maintaining a sense of community and family spirit that welcomes people of diverse backgrounds. At Mayfield, each child is challenged to reach his or her potential. We encourage our students to respond to the needs of our time with compassion, integrity, and confidence in God and in their own gifts.
Educational Vision Statement
Guided by our Holy Child heritage, we provide a distinctive educational experience that balances tradition and innovation in an intellectually challenging and creative environment. Students discover their best selves as they question, collaborate, and connect in a joyful community.
From the Head of School
Dear Mayfield Community,
We are so excited that Phase IA of “Learning Elevated: The Campaign for the Whole Child” is complete! Our state-of-the-art Mustang Athletic Playing Field is absolutely beautiful, and our new parking garage will help a great deal with parking for events after school and on the weekends. Thank you to our Capital Campaign Chair, Brad King P ’17, ’20, ’22, and our Director of Advancement, Anna Longstaff, for helping us to inspire the transformational early donors who made Phase IA possible. Our momentum is strong, and I am confident that we will fund the completion of Phase IB (Center for Teaching and Learning and Arts and Media Annex) now that we are in the public phase of the campaign.
This Maypoll highlights some of our accomplished alums from the class of 2020 and also provides a snapshot of our extensive and growing Middle School program. Our Middle School program continues to flourish with added co-curricular and extracurricular programs and activities. Our Middle School has always focused on leadership and service to others, and that will continue. Our Holy Child Mission, Holy Child Goals, and Student Pledge guide us in all that we do to help create compassionate, kind, and loving leaders who make a difference in our world.
The 2023-2024 donors we celebrate in this issue represent our incredible community support. Your support helps to provide important resources for the operation of the school as we continue to flourish. Thank you first to those of you who are long-time supporters, whether you are a member of our 1931 Circle, a Giving Partner, or the Cornelia Connelly Society, and thank you also to those who have just begun your support of Mayfield Junior School through our Mayfield Fund, Learning Elevated capital campaign, and other opportunities. All of you make a difference. Thank you!
Go Mustangs!

The 1931 Circle: Partners in Giving
The 1931 Circle was established to honor Mayfield's founding year and recognize the generosity of donors who have made a leadership-level gift to the school. Members of the 1931 Circle provide substantial financial support and make a significant impact on our ability to fulfill our Holy Child mission.
Within the 1931 Circle, three Giving Partner levels recognize those donors who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to Mayfield with an annual gift of $5,000 or more.

Alumni Giving
We are thankful for the generosity and spirit of our Mayfield community, especially our alumni and alumni parents and their heartfelt investment in our school’s future.
Blue and White Day of Giving • May 31, 2024
We held our 3rd annual Blue and White Day of Giving on May 31 to correspond with the student Blue and White Field Day. Alumni of all ages were challenged to join the Blue Team (odd grad years) or White Team (even grad years) to see which team could make the most contributions to the Mayfield Fund. Online donors ranged from the class of 1972 through the most recent class of 2024, and ultimately the White Team won for the second year.
New this year was the parent-of-alumni “stack the pancakes” challenge. For decades, parent volunteers have provided a pancake breakfast for Mayfield students before the field games begin. Our digital giving campaign revisited this tradition, encouraging alumni parents to give to the Mayfield Fund and each gift would add one pancake to the stack. It was a fun way to incorporate the parent experience of this memorable day.
With the support of new and returning donors, contributions increased 40% during our 2024 Blue and White Day of Giving versus the previous year. Thank you to all who participated to benefit Mayfield Junior School!

Benefit 2024: Monaco Nights
April 20, 2024 was a great day for Mayfield Junior School! Nearly 400 guests including current parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends gathered at Noor in the Pasadena Paseo for a glittering night to celebrate MJS with music, games, dancing, and fun. The lively “Casino de Mayfield” featured poker, craps, blackjack, and roulette tables while the ballroom hosted live jazz, dancing, Formula 1 race footage and an impressive sushi bar.
Monaco Nights took place under the direction of co-chairs Marcel Lopez P’28 and Yennis Wong P’24, ’27 and their event committee. Their vision was to create an evening as fun as it was fruitful, with more time to mix and mingle and enjoy the company of the Mayfield community. Guests agreed it was a fantastic party.
Each year, the Benefit raises funds for Mayfield’s Endowment while a fund-a-need opportunity supports a special, designated cause. This year, through sponsor and patron support, raffle ticket sales, casino play, and a record-breaking online auction, the event raised $170,000 for the Endowment and another $50,000 for new instruments for Mayfield’s symphonic music program. These funds helped Mayfield achieve a 1-to-1 student-instrument ratio for the 2024-2025 school year.
The annual Benefit continues to be a beloved Mayfield tradition that unites our community in support of Mayfield’s students and Holy Child mission.

“I have found that MJS faculty and staff love our kids fiercely. They want to see these kids grow across all of life's domains, and are constantly figuring out new ways to tease out development from our young people. I donate to the Mayfield Fund so that the adults at Mayfield (who are real partners in my parenting journey) have whatever they need to keep bringing out the best in our children.”

Giving to Mayfield Junior School
Each year, donors provide the additional resources needed to maintain Mayfield’s excellent programs. These generous contributions from our community also allow the school to plan and execute upgrades to our facilities and curriculum to “meet the wants of the age” through the years. We are grateful!
Mayfield Junior School accepts many kinds of gifts, including:
• Cash
Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent allowed by law and may be made with cash, check, or credit card.
• Appreciated Securities
A gift of appreciated stock or other capital assets can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift and avoid paying tax on the gain.
• Matching Gifts
Many employers will match employees’ donations, increasing the impact of a single gift and providing an additional source of income for Mayfield Junior School. Inquire with your Human Resources Department if your employer matches charitable gifts.
• Qualified Charitable Distributions
Donors who are 70 ½ or older can direct an IRA distribution directly to Mayfield. For those 72 or older who must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), an IRA gift is a simple way to give while reducing one’s taxable income.

The core of the Middle School program at Mayfield draws from the belief that everything is learning. Supporting that belief is an intentional approach to how students learn. Agency, opportunity for deeper thinking, and a growth mindset are encouraged. At Mayfield, Middle School is when students become self-starters and active participants in their education, knowing they have the support of trusted adults.
A middle schooler's day is filled with challenging academics, religion, visual and performing arts, wellness, athletics, and time for play. They can expand their interests in co-curricular courses or extensive elective choices, step outside their comfort zone in service-learning activities to make a positive difference in the lives of others and bring their learning to life with projects, presentations, or performances.
Middle School at Mayfield is also a time for expanding student roles in the school community. They gain responsibility as members of student council, build relationships, and share passions in student clubs. They and organize school events such as the Harvest Festival and Blue & White Day. This sense of community is key, making students feel connected and supported.
Each grade level experience builds upon the core attributes of a Mayfield graduate: Curious Mind, Confident Voice, Creative Spirit, and Open Heart. The skills and perspective they gain today will inspire and elevate their futures.

Celebrating the Class of 2024
“We measured our own victories on the success of our fellow classmates. Our friend groups could hardly be called groups–they were massive, and we moved in packs. And each new student that joined our class added another unique piece to our ever-growing puzzle. Look around, fellow graduates. I bet you’ve made a memory with every person in this class during your time at Mayfield.”
Alexandra Mason , Student Body President address
Graduation 2024: Hearts Filled with Gratitude
With great joy and a few tears, the Mayfield Junior School community celebrated the Class of 2024 on June 6 inside the Greg Smith Memorial Gymnasium. A Mayfield graduation is always bittersweet. So much pride and excitement wash over our close community as it comes time to send students off to high school. At the ceremony, they sit before us – budding artists, athletes, scientists, each unique in their dreams and aspirations. Creative, confident, engaged, and resilient, they are ready, with the foundation they received, for the big and small challenges ahead. This moment is a celebration of achievement and of possibility.
As is tradition, the ceremony featured several speeches and awards before diplomas were presented. In his address, Head of School Joe Sciuto reminded the class to be good listeners.
“We are in a fast-paced, social media-driven world, and we are constantly surrounded by noise,” he pointed out. “The better we can block out the noise around us and truly listen to others, the more fulfilled our life will be.”
Alumni speaker Dario Rock ’18 urged the graduates to recognize their responsibility to their own futures and to appreciate the opportunity and formation Mayfield provided. He told them, “Mayfield Junior School has built you a foundation to be successful for this next stage in your life, academically, and with your faith. See, what makes Mayfield so special is that it does not just build the student, but it builds the individual. You never really leave Mayfield Junior School, you will carry it with you for the rest of your young lives.”
Speaking on behalf of her class, Student Body President Alexandra Mason was reflective in her address, noting, “Isn’t it interesting to think that what unites us is actually our differences?” She shared memories of truly missing each other when the pandemic sent them home and how something shifted in their journey to this moment. “We bonded. I think back and remember class projects, some even with unlikely partners, where classmates encouraged each other and helped each other.
“We have reached the end of our journey here. Though our paths diverge and many of us will be going our separate ways, may we always remember that we are never alone and that, should we decide to return to Mayfield, we will be met with open arms and a warm smile.”
Cadence Chan ’24, Graduation Opening Prayer
We measured our own victories on the success of our fellow classmates. Our friend groups could hardly be called groups–they were massive, and we moved in packs. And each new student that joined our class added another unique piece to our ever-growing puzzle.”
The final address given by parent Scott McBride echoed the bittersweet nature of the occasion. After his youngest daughter, Kathleen, and the last of three to graduate from Mayfield, introduced him, Scott was sentimental and grateful. He shared that Mayfield had been a part of their lives for several years, even before Kathleen was born. “We knew that a Holy Child education was special. Eighteen years later, with 23, 20- and 14-year-olds, the Holy Child experience has far exceeded our expectations. Our 9 million, four hundred sixty thousand and 800 minutes as a Mayfield family have certainly been filled with love.”
Looking forward and looking back, as is common on such occasions, highlights the shared experiences of each graduating class. As they leave and continue their educational journey, they will always have Mayfield - memories, lessons, and friendships. And endless support and best wishes for their extraordinary lives ahead. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
“Our school motto is ‘Actions not Words.’ The true meaning of this motto is that we want everyone in our Holy Child community to be people of actions…not just words… but I believe that mindfulness is an intentional action…and it’s certainly not about always using words. Holy Child education is about action…not simply words.”
Joe Sciuto, Head of School Address

TRUST THE PROCESS
Lisa Byrne, Arts Department Chair with Niamh Diver ’15
Applied Theatre, or using theatre for a purpose beyond the production, has always been an important aspect of my pedagogy and personal values. I believe artists have a commitment beyond the art to help people deal with the issues of today and create a vision toward a better tomorrow. To these ends, I was privileged to work with the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York from 1999-2005 as a teaching artist, choreographer, and performer.
In 2005, the RTA worked alongside writer/director Brent Buell to create a new musical called Breakin' the Mummy's Code, a mashup of characters ranging from Hamlet to Freddy Krueger. Over the last few years, director Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley have been working with writers Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and John "Divine G" Whitfield, other formerly incarcerated members of RTA, as well as seasoned actors Coleman Domingo and Paul Raci, to dramatize this experience, and it was finally released by A24 films in the summer 2024. Imagine my surprise when the person working on this project at A24 was my former student from Mayfield, Niamh Diver '15! Talk about a full-circle moment!
I had the opportunity to chat with Niamh (and her sister Orla ’13) at the Brooklyn premiere of the film. I could not be prouder of Niamh and the work she is doing. As a teacher, there is no greater joy than knowing your former students are thriving and continuing to make the world a better place.
LB: Niamh, you have come such a long way from our 8th-grade production of Godspell! How did you get to where you are now?
ND: In my senior year of high school, I was awarded the Warner Bros. Discovery Reach Honorship, an internship and scholarship program. Through this program, I was guaranteed four consecutive summer internships at Warner Bros. Discovery, starting after I graduated from Mayfield Senior School through the summer before my senior year of college. I double majored in History and Political Science at Boston College. The four internships I completed focused on publicity for both TV and Film. I was also a Warner Bros. University Ambassador for Boston College, hosting screenings, events,
and giveaways on campus related to upcoming Warner Bros. releases. After graduating in May 2023, I moved to New York and joined the Specialty Marketing team at A24 doing Regional Publicity and Events.
LB: What is the best thing about your job/life?
ND: I get to plan and attend many really cool events and festivals like our world premiere of The Iron Claw in Dallas, SXSW Film Festival, and screenings for films such as Sing Sing at Sing Sing Correctional Facility for the current population of incarcerated people. It's really rewarding getting to work on film campaigns that elevate the voices of historically underrepresented and marginalized groups. Plus, it is a privilege getting to work on some of my favorite films with some of my favorite actors and directors! Outside of work, one of the best things about my life is just living in New York in my early 20s with all my friends. I've also been meeting so many new people, and it's been great expanding my social circles and making connections with a variety of people.
LB: What is the most challenging thing?
ND: Work is very, very busy! It can be hard to have a great work/life balance because working in the entertainment industry, especially publicity and events, means you must be available pretty much all the time. I've definitely improved balancing my time and making sure that I'm prioritizing not only my job but my social and personal life as well.
LB: What are your future plans?
ND: I am staying in New York for the foreseeable future and definitely planning on staying in the entertainment industry. I hope to continue learning and growing professionally.
Tracey Hodson Blount ’82
Tracey Hodson Blount '82 wanted to be a lawyer for as long as she can remember. There were hiccups along the way, hesitation, and doubt, but somehow, she kept coming back to this path. She found out why along the way. With many choices and fields of law to pursue, Tracey found profound and fulfilling work as trial counsel for Los Angeles County Counsel. Today, with 20 years of experience as an attorney, Tracey hopes to continue her service as a Judge of the Superior Court. She has qualified for a runoff this November.
Last year, Tracey generously volunteered as a judge in our 8th-grade Humanities Mock Trial based on the novel The Outsiders. We were privileged to have a few moments to chat with her and learn more about her career and future plans.
Like most people, Tracey’s career path was never a straight line. She really thought she knew what she wanted until her decision to attend law school at Syracuse University in upstate New York gave her doubts. “I learned the hard way that one should visit a school before deciding to attend,” Tracey shared. “I've always responded to weather; upstate New York in the winter was too much for me. I left after one semester feeling very discouraged –mostly because I was not finishing what I had started.”
Back home, Tracey considered studying psychology, yet soon found her way back to law, taking a job with a bankruptcy attorney. When her mother suggested she look at the University of La Verne Law School, the opportunity to study while working as a legal assistant put her back on her original path. She learned a lot about law and about herself. “I worked for a couple large firms in downtown Los Angeles, first doing real estate and then loan and finance. It was all so transactional – not at all what I imagined or wanted. Meanwhile, in school, I started writing for law review, participated in moot court, and ended up as a paralegal for an insurance company’s in house counsel doing traditional litigation. All this experience was so valuable as it allowed me to see what I liked and didn’t like.”
Tracey had finished law school and was married with her first child when a friend recommended a job opening at Los Angeles County Counsel. “I had never heard of County Counsel,” Tracey admitted, “and I know many people to this day have no idea all the office does. It was eye-opening. Technically, the County Counsel represents the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors and departments of the County as agents of the Board. I started working in the sheriff's advice unit and then transferred to the dependency division. I was still a paralegal at this time and began working with attorneys who would become my mentors.”
Once again, Tracey's path took a detour. She passed the bar, but with life and a government hiring freeze, she found herself working in criminal appeals in the San Bernardino district attorney's office. “I was trying to learn criminal law and realized I just wanted to be back at County Counsel, back in the dependency division. It is a very hard assignment – cases of child abuse and neglect. You are in court every day, and some cases,
such as dealing with serious abuse or a child's death, really weigh on you. Every person serving in that courtroom feels the weight and yet wants to be there.” It was meaningful work, and Tracey was there for it.
In addition to her daily work as an attorney, Tracey serves on several committees. She is part of the County's Diversity and Inclusion Committee and leads that committee's Attraction and Recruitment Subcommittee. She is on the Inter-Agency Council for Child Abuse and Neglect, which deals with teen suicide and exploitation, and she works with several agencies on other issues, such as education and access for foster children who need psychotropic medication. Tracey is committed, “I purposefully involve myself; I want to be a part of these projects.”
Tracey first applied for judge just when the pandemic brought everything to a standstill. Her application was submitted, but nothing was happening. Then, a friend who had successfully run for judge texted her one day at the end of last year. Tracey remembers the moment clearly. “She wrote, Tracey, get down to the recorder's office now and reserve your spot. Today is the deadline!”
Running for judge has been an undertaking. The how – all the procedures, election laws, endorsements, and visibility that are part of running for a judge's seat – Tracey has had to learn along the way. The why - her reason for running has always been very clear. “I wanted to be a judge because I knew the responsibility a judge in dependency court holds. There is no jury because of the confidentiality in cases involving children. The judge listens to everyone, has to keep track of all the facts, and then make decisions. When you're in court every day watching a judge do this, bearing the weight of it, you really understand what service is.”
For Tracey, it is more than a career choice. “I had some of the best judges who were so patient, even-tempered, and acknowledged everyone that came into their courtroom no matter the issue. And, we see some ugly, ugly things, but they were always very respectful to everyone. And that’s who I appeared before for all those years and who I would like to emulate. This is what I feel my assignment is; everything I’ve done has brought me to this point. I am ready.”
36th Annual Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament
The 36th Annual Maureen Shea Memorial Tennis Tournament was held on Sunday, May 19 at a new venue: the Flint Canyon Tennis Club. We welcomed first-time and returning players to the courts for a day of family fun and friendly competition. Current parents Heather and Spencer Sanderson P’26, ’28 joined tournament director Jon Wood in planning the event that included student and alumni divisions, hit-for-prizes, and an exciting finals match and dinner generously hosted at the Shea family home.
Previous alumni division champions and siblings Sarah Leiva ’21 and Matthew Leiva ’15 played Peter McConnell ’15 and Shea McConnell ’09 in the finals, retaining their title for a second year. In the student division, Smith Sanderson ’26 with dad Spencer Sanderson challenged student duo Chloe Shyu ’25 and Elise Chan on the Shea’s clay court, eventually claiming the championship.
Special thanks to MJS alum Carla Tamborini Flores ’01 of the Flint Canyon Tennis Club, and to Mary Shea and her family who generously welcome the MJS community to their home each year.

Maureen Shea graduated from Mayfield Junior School in 1982. She was a member of the tennis teams at both Mayfield Junior and Senior Schools. Her life ended suddenly in an automobile accident in 1985. Coming from a large and caring family, we thought it would be appropriate to have a family tennis tournament as a loving tribute to Maureen. The names of the winners are inscribed on the perpetual trophy donated by her family.
So much about Mayfield, from the longevity and tradition to the joyful spirit that fills the campus, is made possible through the actions and commitment of so many remarkable people over our 90+ years. Many of these individuals helped shape our school, giving of themselves and sharing their passions in support of our mission. Uplifting, defining relationships that only made us better. Our community mourns the loss of facilities team member Roy Chavez
Beloved for his ready smile, positive outlook, and signature phrase, “It’s all good,” Roy fell in love with Mayfield while working on a construction team during the south campus remodel in 2002-2004. He joined Mayfield’s staff even before construction was completed. Throughout his nearly 20 years at Mayfield, Roy had a knack for being there when you needed him most and cheerfully carrying, fixing, cleaning, or moving anything requested whenever he could. Spending most of his day working out and around campus, Roy built relationships with the students, faculty and staff and always put their needs and safety first. His gratitude for his work and the Mayfield community was so deep when he retired in 2023 to fight his Leukemia diagnosis, his connection remained strong, and he visited campus whenever possible. Roy’s joyful spirit was a gift to our community. We pray for his family and all who were blessed to know him.

From the Archives
On the corner of Bellevue and Waldo… Mayfield’s field has been a favorite place on campus for decades. And an important space - big games, historic events, or where students could run, play or just hang out at recess like these photos from year’s past. A few memories and moments of what was, as we start a new era on our reimagined Mustangs Playing Field. So many more memories to come!
