FUNARTEisanon-proÞt,non-governmental organisationthatworksforsocialchangeandtoimprove educationalqualityforthebeneÞtofNicaraguanchildrenand youngpeople.FUNARTEÕsaimistopromoteandfacilitate childrenÕsdevelopmentthroughcreativeactivities.   DuringtherevolutioninNicaraguamanyartistswereactive aspoliticalmuralists.Whendemocracywasrestoredafterthe revolutionagroupofartistscontinuedtopaintaboutrights educationandliteracy.Theydecidedtotrainchildrenand youngpeopleinmuralpaintingsothattheycouldexpresstheir opinionsandhaveavoice.FUNARTEwasfoundedin1987in Managua.ItsubsequentlymovedtoEstel’wheresupportwas foundinthecommunityofBarrioOscarGamezandFUNARTE beganholdingmuralpaintingworkshopseverySaturday.   AswellasthestaȔ,FUNARTEreliesonvolunteerstodevelopits program.Manyofthechildrenandyoungpeoplewhoprogress throughtheworkshopsanddeveloptheirartisticskillseventually learntobecomefacilitatorsofworkshopsthemselves.FUNARTE hasanumberofinternationalexchangeswithartsorganizations indiȔerentcountriesthroughwhichinternationalartistswork withFUNARTEindeliveringworkshopsandexchangingskills.

FUNARTEisbasedinthecityofEstel’inthenorthof Nicaragua.Itisamountainousregionaboutoneanda halfhoursfromthecapitalManagua.Estel’isacityof about119,000people.FUNARTEworkmainlyinthe barriosorcommunitiessurroundingthecitycentre.

FUNARTEworkswithchildren,teenagersandyoungpeople includingyoungpeopleinprisons,youngpeopleaȔectedbychild labour,exploitationandvariousformsofdisadvantage.Theyalso workwithparents,communityleaders,teachers,educatorsand communityleaders.

WHAT?

FUNARTErunsanumberofprogramsthataimtodeveloppersonalandcreativecapacitiesofchildren,youngpeopleand thecommunity.Theseprogramsinclude: Artworkshops: FUNARTEholdfreeartworkshopseverySaturdaybetweenFebruaryandNovember.Childrenfromthecommunityandother neighboringcommunitiescandeveloptheirartisticskillsthroughanopencurriculumtobecomemuralartiststhemselves. Murals/PublicArt: Thegirls,boysandyoungpeopleover10yearsofagethathaveparticipatedintheSaturdayworkshopspaintamuralattheendof everyterm.Eachofthesemuralsreßectathemethathasbeenelaboratedandworkedoncollectivelyduringthewholeterm. Exhibitions: OccasionallyFUNARTEexhibitsartcreatedbythechildren,youngpeople,teachersandparentsinschools,preschools,cultural centres,libraries,cityhallsandforgovernmentdelegations. METHODOLOGY

BACKGROUND

ThemethodsthatFUNARTEuseintheirworkwithyoung peoplearebasedonyearsofworkingwithcommunity leadersandrepresentatives.Intheworkshopswithchildren story-tellingisusedtoinspiretheimaginationsoftheyoung peoplebeforetheyareinstructedintheuseofcolourand howtocomposeanimage.

Nicaraguahashadatroubledpoliticalandeconomicpast. TheSamozadictatorshipruledthecountrybetween1936 and1979monopolizingpower,landandwealth.Allformsof politicalactivitiesanddissentwerebrutallyoppressed.The majorityofNicaraguanslivedinextremepoverty,subsisting ontheproductionofcornandcoȔee.Therewerehuge deÞcitsinliteracy,education,healthcare,humanrightsand healthcare.   Duringthe1980ÕsamovementknownastheSandinistas ledarevolutionagainstthedictatorshipwhichwasbrutally oppressedbyaforceknownastheContraÕs,fundedand trainedbytheUSA.Thousandsofpeopleweretortured, disappearedandmurderedduringtherevolutionandan economicblockadeimposedonthecountry.HoweverIn1990 therewerefreeelectionsanddemocracywasrestored   Withthisbackgroundmuralpaintingbecameanimportant partoflifeinNicaraguaasoneofthefew,ifnotonly,ways ofexpressingtheiropinionsorbeliefs.Theywereusedas toolstoeducatethepublicabouttheirrights,especiallyin relationtoissueslikehealthandeducation.

FUNARTEoperatesasystemofpeereducation.Youngpeople thathaveattendedthecommunity-basedworkshopsand havegainedmural-paintingskillsbecomeyouthleadersor ÒrepresentantesÓ.Representantesteachotheryoungpeople whattheyknowandspeakonbehalfofFUNARTEtothe publicandmedia.In2007agroupofIrishyoungpeople learnedmuralpaintingfromagroupofrepresentantes duringatrainingthattookplaceinEstel’. UDY CASE ST ChildhoodandArtintheStruggleAgainstViolence ThisProjectpromotesaȔectionateandrespectfulrelationshipsbetweenchildrenandtheirparents.Itcurrentlyoperatesin 6diȔerentneighborhoodsaroundEstel’.
