2013. Eighteen students, led by Associate Professor Tracy Everbach and Senior Lecturer Peter Noble, charted new ground with the Mayborn in London partnership with Regent’s University in London. They visited the BBC and were lucky to report from Britain during the week that Prince George was born. Mayborn students also partnered with students from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico under the leadership of Assistant Professor Thorne Anderson to produce a multimedia project on life in Mexico. Dr. Koji Fuse, associate professor, also assisted President V. Lane Rawlins with establishing a memorandum of understanding with Meiji University in Japan. The 9th annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, the premier literary nonfiction conference in the nation, attracted writers from as far away as New Zealand. Thanks to the genius of George Getschow, Publisher Jim Moroney and The Dallas Morning News, the competition was expanded to include the Best American Newspaper Narrative Contest. A new Mayborn Conference website was launched in July to keep the dialogue going year-round. The one constant in media today is change, and we’re proud that our students consistently gain valuable experience working on a variety of platforms including the North Texas Daily, the student newspaper, NTDaily.com and NTDaily TV. The “War Comes Home” series is another example of our commitment to multimedia journalism.

“There’s so much opportunity with the diverse student population, and the Mayborn is poised to be a 21st century leader in journalism education.”

In addition to our dedicated faculty and staff, another strength of our program is the hands-on experiences students gain in the strategic communications and photojournalism arenas. Clients for SWOOP, our student run advertising/public relations firm, have ranged from the UNT Health Science Center to TJ’s Pizza Wings ‘N Things. Gravitas, our UNT ad team, won awards for highest-rated presentation, best media plan and second place overall in District 10 of the National Student Advertising Competition. Our student-run photo agency is now known as Hatch Visuals, and there will certainly be -Dorothy Bland, dean many more great ideas hatched and executed in the year ahead. Onward and Upward,

Dorothy Bland, Dean of the Mayborn School of Journalism

Our students gained valuable experience at a variety of media outlets and agencies such as the Denton Record-Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, WFAATV, the Denton TV public access channel, TracyLocke and Firehouse. In the last year, our students have earned more than 20 state, regional and national awards, including Annual Report 2012-2013 | The Mayborn
