he National Association of Black Journalists chapter at the Mayborn School of Journalism was honored as Chapter of the Year Finalist during 2014-2015. The NABJ was founded at the University of North Texas on April 30, 1987, with a goal of providing its members with the opportunity to strengthen their skills and gain access to career opportunities. The chapter strives to promote diversity in the newsroom and other journalistic professions while connecting its
members to local and national professionals and creating networks for growth and mentorship. The chapter meetings function as workshops and discussion forums that encourage conversation and peer mentorship. UNT NABJ members have access to scholarships, internships, career opportunities and conventions. Students can expect guest speakers from professionals in the field, visits and tours of news publications such as The Dallas Morning News, workshops and volunteer opportunities.

he National Association of Hispanic Journalists is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. The UNT-NAHJ chapter is committed to providing networking opportunities for Hispanics in journalism or related fields, and developing leadership skills for members, as well as expanding their knowledge of their chosen career field. The chapter advocates for Hispanics in journalism and encourages Hispanics to consider and pursue journalism and communications professions, while working with other organizations that advance student interest in journalism careers. Among its activities, UNT-NAHJ has hosted a Mayborn Career Workshop that brought professionals to the UNT library to meet with students and talk career advice. It also has been a sponsor for the Hispanic Communicators DFW Banquet.
