Every home I ever had And especially that one very very big house And all its crevices of loneliness that go on And walk and climb up the stairs grasping Onto the peeling turquoise railing with flecks of pink from underneath (And what's below the stairs) And the heavy metal windows that threaten to open in winter, and the attic And those stairs, and once I stood there and heard everything I never wanted to hear. And all the rooms in it were rooms in me And it seems I lived in them all, from right to left.
** And the Jerusalem house That was the smallest I could find And had the whole world inside it And had the night inside it And words, words erupted inside my head and even more inside my heart And music was there very much. And a big archway That made me stay. And a good green mailbox Where I once received two very beautiful, very sad books And an even sadder letter. And an alleyway in a long street that collects all the wind From everyplace in the world that penetrates the depth of bones. And a broken heart, and a bed that fills it all, and a window That I once thought I saw someone look through and into me And a chill went through all of me And still.

And there was the first desert house The one you couldn't wander through in underwear And all its windows neighbor-facing And at every moment everyone was there, inside it. And in the door across the way a familiar light that shone with pleasance And dinnertime meals. And its Formica shelves, and Formica table And Formica closets, all of which I hated and covered in fabrics upon fabrics And I was also a bit fond of the one round table. And it had the generic estrangement of an inn And I liked its good-heartedness The stairs leading up to the bed The width of the computer and sewing station that almost demanded the expansion of horizons, and night wandering. And in it was an ever-present mix of comfort and strangeness And the distance lingered on and on.
