Purgatory For solo Bassoon

Purgatory is a solo bassoon piece that explores the minute differences between different pitches and the rate of time in which they are played. The composition tries to explore the many different timbres and playing techniques of the bassoon by using microtones, multiphonics, spatial notation, improvisation and other experimental techniques. Purgatory is written using seconds per measure instead of time signature, to give the performer more freedom to interpret the spatial notation in each measure.

Performance Notes!

All fingerings for microtones and multiphonics are suggestions. If another fingering works better or is more comfortable to the performer, then it is suggested to use the comfortable fingering. There is a high G (G5) on page 4, if the player cannot play this note, or wishes to not play this note then substitute it with a G2 (first line in bass clef).!

Ex. 1 Wavy lines are graphical representations of the speed of vibrato. The vibrato should be achieved with only lip movement/pressure and air flow. Speed of the vibrato gets faster as waves are get closer and slower as the waves elongate. The speed is up to the performer but should be proportional. !

Ex. 2 Page 6. This is a glissando and can be achieved with lip movement and fingerings or just fingerings. It should sound fast and chaotic, so the performer can use whatever technique they choose to play the contour of the glissando.!

Ex. 3 Notes with a straight line following indicates that the note should sustain.! !

Ex. 4 Three slashes through the beam of notes indicates to play the notes in the beam as fast as possible. Two slashes means play a little slower than as fast as possible.!

Time is given for each measure (2” -> 2 seconds). The time indicates how long the performer has to play the notes in that measure proportional to the notation. If there is no time, play the measure as fast as possible. This first appears on page 5. There are also blank measures. These measure are silence for the given duration.!
