The Newsletter for Whittle Programmed Painting Issue 2 Autumn/Winter 2012
Welcome to the second issue of “Covered”.
Despite the poor weather in 2012 (which was definitely not ideal for painting!), it has been very encouraging to see that the Whittle business has continued to grow. We have added numerous new programmes in 2012 and have also established many new relationships. It is pleasing to note that growth on programmes has come from clients recognising the significant Stephen Hankinson benefits that programmes bring and those benefits are again featured Group Chief Executive inside. You will have seen in the first issue of “Covered” that as a business we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. In this issue you will read that our Nottingham office has set a new Group record for recycling cans and that we worked jointly with one of our major clients, Birkenhead School on a key environmental research initiative utilising students from across Europe.
Since the last issue of “Covered” we have secured the Constructionline and SAFEContractor accreditations and become a member of the British Decorators Association.
STUDENTS GREEN GOALS EMBRACED BY HANKINSON PAINTING GROUP keen to develop new ideas and innovations to combat these issues further. Under this latest environmental initiative, the students worked closely with Hankinson as well as partners and suppliers, including Dulux, who shared their wider concerns with the Group concerning product waste. Presenting their findings to Group Chief Executive, Stephen Hankinson and his team, recommendations varied from the sole use of metal containers rather than plastic with metal proving easier to recycle, partnering with specialist cleaning firms that are able to clean the containers leaving zero residue and ready for re-use, whilst other ideas focused on storage and recycling. The Students with the Hankinson Team
A group of international students, who took part in a ground breaking research project at the Head Office of Hankinson Painting Group in Birkenhead, to tackle the issue of waste will see a series of their recommendations incorporated into the Company’s Corporate Strategy. The group of four, Maria Razquin, 17 from Spain, Aaron Laidig, 18 of Germany and Francis Good and Tom Atherton, both 16 and from Wirral (attending Birkenhead School) spent two weeks as part of their Economic syllabus researching, discussing and developing innovative ways to reduce waste. The initiative was organised by Birkenhead School.
Amy Rosser, Group Health, Safety & Environmental Co-ordinator who co-ordinated the project on behalf of Hankinson commented how they are planning to use the student’s ideas as part of their own green initiative “We were impressed by the group’s presentation and will be taking their advice in a number of areas”. John Clark, Headmaster of Birkenhead School said “We believe our European Research Project is unique in offering students the opportunity to learn how to live and work together, undertaking genuine scientific and economic research.” Stephen Hankinson, added “We were delighted to work with Birkenhead School on this important initiative that gives students a real taste of the world of business.”
The issue of waste is an important one for Hankinson who estimate some 8,000 litres of waste paint and 15,000 containers need to be disposed of annually and they are A member of The Hankinson Painting Group

Case Study Castle Brewery, Newark, Nottinghamshire External surfaces and interior communal spaces Five year maintenance programme On Albert Street in Newark, Nottinghamshire, the building of Castle Brewery, founded in 1870, was the registered office of James Hole & Company Limited. The James Hole Brewery grew to roughly 250 public houses until its closure in the early 1980s. Since the development of the Brewery into residential apartments, the Castle Brewery Management Company (CMBCL) and FHP Property Consultants in association with Fisher Hargreaves Proctor property managers have sought an innovative way in which to maintain the splendour and magnificence of this former brewing site. In 2011 CMBCL and FHP Property Consultants entered into a five year maintenance painting contract with Whittle Programmed Painting to repaint both the external surfaces and interior communal spaces. Difficult access requirements meant large facades of the building were scaffolded, including all bell and clock towers. 80 ft. MEWPS were utilised in areas that could be reached without scaffolding. The work took eight weeks to complete with consideration given to causing tenants minimum disruption.
The Key Benefits of Programmed Painting Your premises remain looking fresh so no worries about when they’ll get their next full repaint. Stakeholders have a positive experience of your organisation. Surfaces remain protected so you are not simply building up future cost. You know your financial commitments exactly for each year of the programme so you can plan your finances with confidence for future years. The initial cost of repaint is spread over the life of the programme so your budget can still cover your maintenance needs.
All internal stairways, passages and gymnasiums were decorated and with the annual maintenance service now scheduled each and every year, CMBCL and FHP Property Consultants are confident in the ability of Whittle to maintain the surfaces to a high standard. The specification adopted by Whittle involved the use of premium grade products from the Dulux Weathershield range including Weathershield Gloss, Metalshield finish and Sikkens Novatech woodstains. Areas of timber cladding bleached and weathered were stripped using Owatrol pre-deck and Net-trol and refreshed back to their original condition.
Very little management time required once the programme is set up freeing you to focus on your core business.
We guarantee the paint film applied in year one, so if it peels off during the contract, it’s our problem not yours.
"A lot of work had to be undertaken in cramped conditions. Whittle Programmed Painting demonstrated complete site safety and used highly skilled tradesmen throughout the project. We were delighted with the results and look forward to an on-going relationship." Rachel Serio - Surveyor, FHP Property Consultants
