CHASING GREATNESS

WHAT WE’RE ABOUT. It will not take long for you to learn that Motive is a special kind of agency. You will have no trouble noticing that the list of intangibles that make us who we are is virtually endless. You will find that this is a collection of people from all different paths, converging to create something bigger than ourselves. And it all comes back to one thing: Chasing Greatness.

Solutions first, then conversations.

Tell people when others are doing a good job - celebrate each others small victories instead of waiting for all the accolades to come form the top.

A philosophy that aligns with the aspirations of the individuals who work here and the goals we share, Chasing Greatness is a mantra every Motive employee must internalize and live by. It’s one part mission, and one part vision; an overriding mentality and a way of being. It’s the standard by which we measure our work—every piece of work—as well as the people we hire and the clients with which we engage.

5

CHASING GREATNESS IS OUR TRUE NORTH.

Your attitude is everything! If you bring a positive attitude, you’ll get a positive response, if you bring negativity, you’ll get the same in return.

FIND IT, AND YOU’LL BE CREATING GREATNESS IN NO TIME.

PEOPLE

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF MISFIT TOYS. The 1964 clay-mation classic “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” features a collection of offbeat, misunderstood, but ultimately invaluable characters that gather together in a place called the Land of Misfit Toys. In the real, non-clay-mation world, Motive is that place.

Be open and honest about how you’re doing but come at challenges from a positive place - you’ll accomplish more that way, and people will be more open to helping you out.

Motive is what you make of it - if you want in on something, raise your hand and say so.

Filled with creative, executional and (most importantly) cultural diversity, we take what makes each member of the team unique and turn it into one all-encompassing agency mojo; the kind of so-crazy-it-just-might-work melding of personality that you simply can’t replicate. So bring your “whatever” to work. It’s what we hired you for.

11

PEOPLE

We’re not mind readers and we’re approachable. If you need something, some help or have a question - ASK.

You are working in a shop full of the coolest, friendliest and most talented people ever. The work culture is absolutely unparalleled and cannot be replicated, but to be part of the team you have to meet the requirement of being badass too.

13

PEOPLE

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. Remember those team projects back in school, when everyone had to play an equal-but-different role in getting the work done? Motive is kind of like that, except instead of ‘A’s we earn awards. And like a team, we’re all in this together. Words like “hierarchy” and “ego” are frowned upon; here, relationships transcend titles, focusing on community and collaboration instead. Thanks to all that, there is “dream team” level work going down here…and now, you are responsible for making sure we all live the dream together.

Treat every task like it’s the Super Bowl of tasks

WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY. You have been selected to join Motive and make amazing things happen for a mind-blowing collection of brands. Let this sink in; let its magnitude wash over you. Beginning now, you and you alone are responsible and accountable for the energy you bring to this agency. You may choose to play a defined cultural role—the sage, the critic, the jester, the mediator, the leader— but whatever you aspire to be, do it in a way that makes Motive a better place to be for everyone around you.

PEOPLE

BE A CHAMPION, ACT LIKE A CHALLENGER. When Motive first opened its doors, we were challengers. When we landed our first national client, we were challengers. When we stole the Super Bowl Halftime Show, we were challengers. And we are challengers today. No matter how much we grow or how far ahead of the curve we venture, we will always act like the underdog. We are scrappy, obsessively nimble and relentlessly entrepreneurial. We take no victory or success for granted. We will always be challengers‌even when the world sees us as champions.

Brainstorm means come with ideas.

LEARN TO LOVE YOUR TEAM. There’s an old adage we like to keep in mind: you can never be too sure what’s going on in someone else’s life. Everyone you work with is someone’s mother, daughter, brother, wife, husband, friend or confidant—and while the challenges each day presents will undoubtedly bring out the emotions of us all, we must remember that the world is bigger than Motive. So treat your teammates with respect, dignity, humility and grace. If we can all agree to that, we can all enjoy making magic happen together.

You are about to board a rocket ship of creative ideas.

THIS PLACE IS PRETTY BUTTONED-UP. Strike that. It’s really buttoned-up. Our creatives don’t miss deadlines, not even the head-shakingly insane ones. Our account people know how to brief—and they brief well. The event team pulls off activations normally reserved for the folks who put on music festivals.

You will be working the biggest powerhouse around.

People with an opinion even when it’s wrong are respected more than people without.

We all work together like butter works on toast. This is a well-oiled machine put together with inexplicable, un-replicable, Doc Brown-level genius. So yeah, we’re doing the damn thing… and it’s time you did too.

23

BUT WE’RE NOT STUFFY. Some agencies believe that you can be “professional,” or you can be “cool.” But the two aren’t mutually exclusive, and at Motive, it shows. As cliché as it is, we really do work hard and play hard. Dogs are allowed (so long as they have their shit together). Beers are encouraged (so long as you have your shit together). Most importantly, we believe everyone here has a good heart—and that they should be encouraged to show it. So let your freak flag fly, enjoy the ride and everything’s gonna be all good.

Being late to meetings is bad manners if you don’t let someone know prior. That being said, NEVER be late to Status.

HOMEBASE

MOTIVE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. You probably heard it from more than one person, in more than one way, during your interview: the Motive path can be whatever you want it to be. We’re not outside the box; there is no box. Everyone here is empowered to be more than what they’re hired for; to act beyond their title; to lean into any and all projects that pique their interest. What you do at Motive is for you to decide. But be warned: you’re also responsible for building your own safety net.

25

HOMEBASE

A.B.P. (ALWAYS BE PRESENT). Yes, you can only make one first impression with each person you meet—but the first impression isn’t the only one you’ll leave. At Motive, the only thing more important than being creative is being the kind of person your clients can believe in: so show up every day as if you’re going to be face-toface with the people who rely on you. Because the truth is, your team relies on you 24/7…and if you can’t convince them you’re worthy of that trust, how are you going to convince a client?

When Statman says “well fuck” in a draft review that its not always a bad thing.

THIS IS YOUR HOUSE. We encourage everyone to be themselves and make their workspace their own. However, things get dicey when you start to save up unrefrigerated sandwiches in the space between your keyboard and monitor…and everyone starts to notice. By all means, show your true colors— but don’t let those colors bleed too far into the personal space of your fellow Motive-ites. Oh, and if the coffee (or the keg) runs out, don’t just walk away and wait for someone else to take care of it.

None of us really have any idea what the fuck we are doing everyday, but we have a pretty damn good time trying to figure it out and somehow have made some magic happen.

COLLABORATORS

COLLABORATION STARTS WITH YOU. While Motive may not employ the typical structure you’d find at other shops, we do galvanize the team around the spirit of collaboration. Our environment is about working together—harder, smarter, better—to build solutions and create work we’re proud of.

Being truly ALL IN means stepping outside of your comfort zone EVERY second of EVERY day.

Turn the light off in the bathroom - recycle - don’t use plastic bags (ever!)

We are partners, not just with each other but with our clients: we are “in it” with them, sharing a passion for success and innovation. Their fight is our fight. We can’t chase greatness unless we do it together.

35

COLLABORATORS

CREATE WORK WORTHY OF YOUR NAME. We’re lucky enough to have worked on the Super Bowl. We’re also lucky enough to have scoured the country for mountain towns, managed social media for natural foods companies and make website updates for regional tourism clients. And you know what? We’ve attacked every last project with a goal of creating greatness. At Motive, there is no project too small; no person too junior; no opportunity too miniscule. We give everything we’ve got, to everything we’re lucky enough to get. Get used to it.

Statman is not wearing the clothes he wore yesterday. He is just wearing the same thing.

GREAT IDEAS COME FROM THE GUT. Motive is a house of ideas, constantly freeflowing and emerging from every corner of the agency. And the only way it can stay like this is if you SPEAK UP! Don’t be constrained by what you think might be a great idea; share every idea so the team can make it great. Listen to the ideas of others; you might hear brilliance in their words. Listen to your clients; they know their brand and their perspective is valuable. But most of all, defend your convictions, follow your passion, and go from the gut.

37

COLLABORATORS

HARD WORK BEATS TALENT. When talent doesn’t work hard. It’s true. We may not be brimming with Ivy-educated, big-city, closet-full-of-Cannes types, but we win—and we win a lot. 30% of the time it’s because we’re more creative than everybody else. But the rest of the time, it’s because we outwork the hardest workers in the industry (which, in itself, is one of the hardest working industries out there). That doesn’t mean we work 100 hours a week…but you’re probably not stopping at 40, either. Without hard work, success is unachievable.

When someone is touring the office - stand up, look them the eye, shake their hand and introduce yourself.

DIFFICULT TAKES A DAY. IMPOSSIBLE TAKES A WEEK. Yeah…that sounds about right. No, really. At this agency, we are faced with impossibilities on a daily basis—hard passes at some of the bigger shops bogged down by process and bullshit philosophies—but impossible for us is just another obstacle to climb over. You’ll probably cram three weeks into your first week at Motive and three weeks into the week after that, but when you’re looking back on what you and the team have managed to accomplish, you’ll be proud to show it off.

39

“Culture at Motive is marabout being passionate and relentless than it is about being cool or trendy - but knowing the latest and greatest in everything from tech, to music, to film, definitely has its benefits.

41

We are a crazy-ass group who likes to have fun. Know your limits and set boundaries to ensure you can manage being professional and having fun.

43

A FEW THINGS TO LIVE BY

Say hello in the morning. Say goodbye at night. You win some. You lose most. Not everyone one can come up with big ideas but everyone can be part of them. Loyalty is a rare find. Guard it. Protect it. Celebrate it. A dog in the office can help diffuse even the most challenging situations and managers. We will take enthusiasm over experience any day.

45

THE REALITY IS THAT GREATNESS IS ONLY ACHIEVED WHEN THE FILTER OF GREATNESS IS APPLIED TO EVERY LITTLE PIECE – OF ASSIGNMENT TASK PROJECT.

AT MOTIVE THERE IS NO PERSON TOO LARGE FOR A SMALL PROJECT AND NO PERSON TOO SMALL FOR A LARGE PROJECT.
