ABOUT US

ABOUT US NIght time photo of factory with garage doors open ABOUT MOMENT

When you ask us what makes Moment different from other brands, we’re never sure where to start. You may have seen our skis in a magazine, stacked up against other brands in an annual review, or maybe you just watched a YouTube segment with some grainy, homemade park footage. Depending on what you’ve read, heard, or seen, you might think we’re a big corporation with a huge factory somewhere in China (or was it Colorado? Croatia?), or maybe you think we’re just a couple of dudes running a garage operation in Tahoe. More often than not, you heard about us from someone who owns a pair, and if you’re really informed you might have learned we make skis in the USA. But it’s rare that we meet anyone who knows the whole story. So here’s the straight dope.

We aren’t a garage operation. We operate our own factory in Reno, on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Having a factory doesn’t mean we’re big—far from it. Ring us up, and you’ll get one of three people: our founder, our vice president, or the next closest person to the phone because the first two have their hands full. That’s not a euphemism for being in a meeting, either—it means hands full, wrangling a 200-pound mold out of a press, deep in the CAD zone tweaking a ski design, or helping out a customer. We have a showroom here in the shop, and if you’re in town you can come visit us anytime. We don’t have a board of directors, a savvy PR firm on retainer, or an R&D department. This catalog? The result of an annual Red Bull and beer fueled three-day bender involving our slave-driving, emotionally abusive VP, one annoyingly talented, black-leather-clad misanthrope of a graphic designer, and a brilliant, ruggedly handsome yet woefully underappreciated copywriter. We don’t make skis like big companies do. The decision to make a new model or keep an old one isn’t made in an executive boardroom, staring at a projection of last year’s profit-and-loss statement. We make those decisions on the mountain, because we are skiers first, and we make skis for skiers—for you, for us, for our friends, for our families. We design them ourselves, we make them by hand in small batches, and we make them look like nothing else because everybody knows being different is cool. Believe us when we say it’s not about the money, and it never has been. It’s about skiing, and bringing you the best skis for the best times. Welcome to the Biggest Little Ski Company in the World. Welcome to Moment.

HANDMADE IN THE USA There’s good stuff out there - but you may have to work a little harder to get it when the snow gods aren’t puking their guts out all over your local mountain. We’re working harder too, sourcing 95% of the materials in our skis and 100% of the people who make them from right here in the USA, then cranking late into the night to bake batch after batch of handmade shred sticks. We’re making them tougher to last longer, lighter so you can go farther into the backcountry, and more fun for those days when it does dump like it should. We’re always adapting and improving, and as a result, all we make are limited editions. Don’t get with us if you don’t want to work. You have to pay to play, and we don’t mean in dollars. But rest assured, when you’ve put in the effort and you have a pair of Moments under you working for you, the reward will be worth it. And we’ll be right there with you.

TRIPLE CAMBER TECHNOLOGY by MOMENT SKIS

Triple Camber Technology adds twin micro-cambers within the center camber of the ski, restoring pop to the tip and tail and stiffening the overall profile of the ski while maintaining the loose feel of a rocker/ camber design. In powder, the low center and rockered ends allow you to float and slash. On hardpack, the micro-cambers bite with focused pressure into the snow, making the shorter effective edge more effective in the turn. In variable conditions, Triple Camber adds confidence without making the ski sluggish or hard to initiate. Triple Camber Technology will take your skiing to the next level. It’s the best of all worlds.

CAMBER TECH

HANDMADE IN THE USA

FRONT ROCKER Rocker in the tip with traditional camber underfoot and a flat tail. Front Rocker gives a ski the strength and edging power of a cambered ski, while the rockered tip speeds turn initiation, blasts through crud, and planes quickly in the powder.

TALLAC, GOVERNOR

MUSTACHE ROCKER Traditional camber underfoot and rocker at the tip and tail. Camber gives you high-speed stability and edge hold on hardpack, while rocker at both ends feels loose and playful in variable snow.

VICE, PB&J, BIBBY, HOT MESS, CARSON

TRIPLE CAMBER TWIN ROCKER Rocker at the tip and tail, low center camber, and two sections of micro-camber embedded in front of and behind the binding. Rocker and low camber let the ski surf and slash in powder, while the micro-camber sections create focused edge pressure on hardpack for carving.

FRANKENSKI, DEATHWISH, SIERRA, UNDERWORLD

TRIPLE CAMBER FRONT ROCKER Rocker in the tip, camber underfoot, and microcamber sections before and behind the binding. Easy turn initiation, stability and maneuverability for variable snow, with powerful edge hold and turn exit on hardpack.

TAHOE, BELAFONTE

TRIPLE CAMBER FLAT ROCKER This rocker profile is flat underfoot with extended tip and tail rocker. Micro-cambers outside the binding area preserve grip on hardpack and stiffen the tail to prevent wheeling out in big-air landings. Handlebar Rocker is designed to surface quickly and ride atop variable snow with exceptional maneuverability, yet remain secure when engaged in a turn.

GHOST TRAIN, EXIT WORLD

FULL ROCKER MERIDIAN, BELLA

A Full rocker profile is a complete and single radius. Originally designed for powder, this camber profile has been adapted for all mountain skiing. It creates a pre-flexed ski with extremely easy turn initiation and easy smearing and pivoting when needed.

TECHNOLOGY

Whereas many small ski companies rely on outsourcing to produce prototypes, we create and press new designs entirely in-house. A process that might take weeks for others takes 24 hours or less at Moment. It is this agility that allows us to experiment with radical rocker profiles, to rework dimensions by the millimeter, and to test out new materials, in order to bring you the best skiing experience possible every season.

MATERIALS

CARBON FIBER

2.2MM EDGE

SIDEWALL

We use carbon fiber in all our skis, either in the form of woven unidirectional stringers or carbon tow threads added to the laminate matrix. Lighter than fiberglass, metal, or basalt, carbon helps tune and strengthen the ski while adding longevity to the flex profile.

We source our edges from the industry’s mostrecognized manufacturer. They arrive from Austria hardened to 48 Rockwell, and we perform additional heat-treating in-house to adjust the hardness and ductility of the steel, ensuring you get the most life out of your skis.

Extruded UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is the sidewall material we use for every pair of skis. It is extremely light, durable, and resistant to separation.

BASE

LAMINATES

TOPSHEET

Our U.S. made Durasurf 4001 sintered base material takes a beating while staying fast. Harder and with better wax absorption properties than extruded bases, sintered bases are the industry standard for performance and longevity.

In addition to carbon fiber, we use three types of fiberglass laminates to fine-tune the flex of our skis. Triaxial glass adds twisting strength and longitudinal stiffness. Biaxial weaves add torsional stiffness. Unidirectional glass helps absorb vibration and stiffen the ski from tip to tail.

We use several different types of topsheet materials, enhanced with sublimated graphics - a nontoxic and eco-friendly alternative to silk screening. Each topsheet choice is made to ensure optimal durability and impact resistance while maintaining crisp and bright graphics.

RESIN We developed our proprietary epoxy resin direclty with the U.S. manufacturer. Custom-formulated for flexibility, durability, and exceptional bonding strength in cold conditions, our resin is what keeps everything together. Made in the USA.

CONSTRUCTION

ASPEN / PINE

PAULOWNIA / ASH

STANDARD LAYUP

Strong, light, and poppy, with a great ride thanks to the damping performance of pine, our aspen/ pine core is the foundation of our all-mountain and powder skis.

Paulownia is exceptionally light in weight, with similar properties to aspen in terms of flex and rebound. We use this as the core foundation for our touring models, and add ash stringers for strength and a smooth ride.

A combination of carbon fiber stringers and fiberglass sheets helps give our skis their signature smooth ride and long flex life. Triaxial glass adds twisting strength and longitudinal stiffness. Biaxial weaves add torsional stiffness. Unidirectional glass helps absorb vibration and stiffen the ski from tip to tail.

ASPEN / ASH

BAMBOO

LOW FAT LAYUP

Ash stringers give this core outstanding stiffness and damping without excess weight, making it perfect for our big-mountain models and our competition park ski, the Vice.

We use a core of laminated bamboo in the Frankenski. Bamboo is extraordinarily tough and flexible, making it ideal for the abuses of urban jibbing. It is also rapidly renewable, since cutting bamboo does not stop the plant from growing.

Our Low-Fat Layup uses 33% more carbon and a lighter fiberglass weave to shave excess weight from the ski while preserving snap and life. We use this layup in our touring models and in our widest men’s and women’s powder skis.

PARK

FRANKENSKI

16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

Dr. Frankenstein made a monster, and it killed him. We made the Frankenski…and it just straight kills. Whether you’re just getting into the park or you’re decades deep in the game, you’ll find our Frank to be your new best friend. Its forgiving flex comes with a side of toughness, courtesy of a full bamboo core and semi-cap construction. The outstanding grip of Triple Camber Technology cancels out the wishy-washy feeling that softer skis get in hard conditions, and adds pop to the tail for flat urban transitions. Extra width makes it extra stable, whether you’re landing your first three or dialing in your pretzel-out.

VICE 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

The Vice flexes the long arm of Mustache Rocker law, cracking down in the park with authority. Tip and tail rocker keep things breezy, even in chopped-up afternoon manmade. TAHOE 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

The simple truth is this: skinny skis shred hard snow better. So when the conditions call for shattered elbows, we reach for the Tahoe and point ‘em down the fall line. Of course, some would never call the Tahoe skinny—but we aren’t bashing gates, and 96 millimeters is just slim enough to offer superb grip, along with the stability you want for variable snow. Triple Camber Technology doubles down on the edging wager, sawing through packed granular like Leatherface while maintaining the playful, pivot-able personality needed to zipperline bumps from Maine to Colorado.

Want to know a secret? Come closer. The PB&J can ski anything. Shh! Not so loud! We’re trying to sell skis, and that’s the kind of insider knowledge that could ruin a little company like ours. Fact is, if you have a pair of PB&J’s, you already know. Center mounted, it’s a stable-like-a-horse-house park ski. Mounted on the line, it’s a ripping allmountain ski that can get down in the deep stuff without hooking you up. Somewhere in between, it’s a little bit of both, and a whole lot of fun. You owe it to yourself to ski a pair.

MERIDIAN 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

As long as there’s coverage, there’s the Tahoe. Fully rippable even when the corduroy’s been shaved to Brazilian standards by group lessons and pizza parties, the Tahoe is our low tide go-to and a favorite in Europe, Japan, and the hardpack-prone Northeastern U.S. of A. Triple Camber Technology gives it more bite when things freeze up, while Front Rocker keeps it stable in chop and easy to initiate in tight trees.

DEATHWISH

In 2012, Triple Camber Technology was a crazy experiment we were prepared to abandon after a single season. Four years later, we’ve put some form of TCT into almost every ski we make, and the original mad scientist is still in the building holding it down. The hype and industry awards are a distant murmur, but the Deathwish still brings the most overwhelmingly positive reviews from some of the best skiers we know. “It’s just so good.” “It’s the perfect everyday ski.” “I put Dynafits on mine and bought a second pair for inbounds. Am I crazy?” “Can you make it with a girly graphic just for me?” “I have the 184 & the 190…and that’s my quiver.” “Whatever you do, don’t change it.” There’s not much to say anymore, except that you have to ski it to believe it. The combination of perfect width, metal-free carbon wood core construction, and Triple Camber make the Deathwish the most revolutionary, eye-opening experience you’ll ever have on snow. Once you feel the freedom of surfing sideways into a narrow chute, pivoting your tips down the fall line, pointing it out, and then railing auto-pilot carves all the way to the tram, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Sit the Tahoe down at the training table, and you get the Belafonte: a fatter version of our hardpack hustler and the favorite of those who believe faster is better, no matter how much it snowed last night. Several generations ago, this was a hard-charging experts-only ski. However, thanks to Triple Camber Technology, the new Belafonte has turned from a track-day special into one of those turbo all-wheel-drive wagons: versatile, predictable, and easy to drive, but nevertheless ready to blow the doors off anyone who pulls up next to you.

GOVERNOR 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

Big, burly skis without a ton of rocker aren’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea. However, the Governor’s manageable, forgiving nature and astonishing stability have helped it win more than its share of intermediate hearts as it checks off big lines on expert wish lists. Take it for a spin, and you’ll be amazed at how the ‘Govy’ can swing around in tight trees and lazy-lap groomers at grandpa velocity. Yes, it’s big, and it’s definitely burly, but when the pucker factor is high and you need a ski that can put you on its shoulders and carry you to safety, the Governor is your ally.

TALLAC

16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

As progressive as we like to get with our designs, there’s something to be said for keeping it classic—especially when it comes to touring skis. The Tallac is about as trad as we get, with a rearset mount, flat notched tail, and (relatively) svelte 104 waist. Why make a ski like this? Because super-fatties suck on long approaches, twin tails can’t kick-step, and modern mount points don’t play nice with heavy packs and ramped-up bindings, that’s why. The Tallac features our Low Fat Layup to shave extra weight off every step, but we made the shovel slightly stiffer to give you more bust in the crust. We used to wonder whether we could play the backcountry game as well as those companies who make skis for rock climbers. Now we have the Tallac, and we wonder no more.

UNDERWORLD

16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

It wasn’t long after we made the Deathwish that we put touring bindings on a pair and took them up the skin track. That was the inspiration behind the Underworld: a Triple Camber touring ski that’s easier to haul uphill, but just as fun on the way down. To keep it light, we made it narrower, gave it our Low Fat Layup, and shaved a bit off the ends as we flattened out the tip and tail. That way, you get the same performance from a shorter, lighter ski, and that means more laps per day.

EXIT WORLD 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

We wouldn’t call the Exit World a randonée ski, because that conjures up images of Lycra bros in one-buckle boots. What it is, is our attempt to make touring for powder as fun as a free cat ride without tearing your legs off on the way back up. Can it compete on the scales with computerized, nanotube-injected turbo-Euro tour skis? Nope. But does it ski better? Hell yep, thanks to a flat midsection, tons of rocker, tons of float, and Triple Camber grip for the shrubby return to your truck. And when you put a shark fin through the base after stomping a 35-footer in the Tetons, you can repair it instead of watching your skis turn into a $1200 pile of carbon dust. Just sayin’.

The Bibby’s back, and there’s gonna be trouble. Hey na… The truth is: you were right and we were wrong. This is still one of the best designs we’ve ever made, and when we got back on it last year after its much-maligned hiatus, we all looked at each other and instantly knew it was the right thing to do. The shape is the same as it was in the beginning, and it is good. But that’s not to say we didn’t improve things a bit. More carbon inside and semi-cap construction outside have made it lighter and tougher, so all of you maniacs still skiing first-generation Bibbys can feel good about upgrading—and putting another thousand days on your new pair.

The Hot Mess has been the ladies’ frontside ski for years, and this year we decided it was time to update it for more versatility. Since we added Triple Camber Technology to the Sierra, we’ve seen it take off in every market. Triple Camber creates a mid-fat ski that feels like a full-rocker design in chop, smoothing out the ride and eliminating tip deflection. On hardpack, it hooks up and carves with energy even when the only snow is coming from a hose, so you can ski it all season long in any conditions with total confidence. This year, we added semi-cap construction, because a ski you’ll be on all year needs to be able to handle more abuse.

CARSON 16/17 HANDMADE IN THE USA

Most companies figure it’s fine to put a young gun on a foam-cored imitation of a real ski, because who cares about quality if they’re going to outgrow it in a year anyway, right? Well, we don’t do that. The Carson is a mid-fat, Front Rocker kid’s twin, built to the same exact standards as our adult skis, with hand-laid construction, a customprofiled full wood core, full damping perimeter, and beefy edges that can take a beating. This way, when Junior or Janeior grows out of his or her pair, they’ll still have plenty of life left for little bro, little sis, or the swap meet at the rec center.
