Insurance Tip of the Month

Possibly the most important coverage on your homeowners policy is the liability coverage. This is oftentimes the most overlooked coverage as well. Most people worry about the coverage on their home and contents and forget about the liability coverage. Your liability coverage pays for things that you are liable for to people who do not live in your household (medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, attorney fees, lawsuits, etc). Many things around your home can cause you to be liable to others. Examples include a dog biting a neighbor, a child falling off of a trampoline, an unfenced swimming pool, outdoor deck without proper handrails on the stairs, and playground equipment. Remember, liability from autos, boats, jet skis, golf carts, and 4 wheelers are not covered under the home policy because they have their own policies to cover their liability. When you look at the high costs of medical bills, lost wages, and attorney fees for lawsuits, you may realize that your liability limits are not high enough on your home owner’s policy. You can increase your home owner’s liability up to $1 million (which does not increase the premium a lot). If you want more than $1 million in liability, you will have to buy a separate umbrella policy (which will also add additional liability coverage to your auto and boat policies as well). Let us know if you want to increase your liability limits on your home policy. We try to automatically quote at least $300,000 in coverage.

Insurance Product of the Month

Life Insurance is one of the most important types of insurance that you can buy. Most people wait too long to buy this coverage (when they are older or after a major illness) and the premiums are much more expensive than they could have been. There are two main types of life insurance (universal life and term life). Universal life insurance allows you have both life insurance and a semi-savings account called a cash value account. As you pay more premium into the policy, you are able to actually take some of the cash value out of the policy if you would like. Universal life is oftentimes more expensive than term life for younger people because of the built-in savings feature. However, universal life premiums will never increase, so you will always be paying the same amount. As you get older, universal life ends up being much less expensive than term life insurance and your cash value will have grown. Term life insurance remains a set premium for the term (usually 10, 20, or 30 years). After the term is up, the premium starts increasing each year based on your age at that time. You should theoretically have enough life insurance to cover any debts that your loved one’s will incur. Examples include mortgages, car loans, student loans to send kids to college, 8 years of lost wages, business loans, etc. Many people choose to have a smaller amount of universal life for their entire life. This keeps premiums for universal life insurance affordable. However, they “piggyback” the term insurance on top of the universal life policy by getting a 30 year term for a lot of coverage. In theory, most of your debts should be cleared in 30 years, so you can drop the term insurance when it is too expensive.

Insurance Tip of the Month

Insurance Product of the Month

Look into getting life insurance for you and your family. This may be the most important coverage out there. Due to the enormous costs of burial expenses, mortgages, lost wages for the family, loans, car payments, and tuition for your children, it is very important to leave something for your loved ones in case of a tragedy. This will help lessen the financial burden on your beneficiaries.

Jewelry riders can be added onto your homeowners or renters insurance policies. Most homeowners policies only offer about between $1,000-$2,500 in coverage for collectibles such as jewelry, guns, stamp collections, coins, etc. This jewelry rider allows you to increase your coverage for expensive jewelry while also including worldwide coverage and theft coverage. Generally, jewelry riders are not expensive. However, some companies require appraisals before writing this coverage (in order to have documentation of the jewelry’s value if a claim occurs). Each item of jewelry is separately listed out on the policy with its own limit of coverage. Other collectible items are written the same way. If you have any expensive items or an expensive collection of any type of collectibles, please let us know so we can add these onto your policy to ensure proper payment of claims.

The good thing about life insurance is that having something is better than nothing at all. We can always find you life coverage that can fit into your budget (even though it may not be as much as you would like, we can at least tailor a policy to fit your budget). Its better to have the beneficiaries receive something instead of nothing at all to lessen the financial strain. Some life insurance policies will remain the same price every year, while some policies increase in price over time. Give us a call today if you are interested in looking into affordable life insurance options!

Reminders

Due to the winter season approaching, always remember to take extra measures while using heaters and fire places to prevent house fires. Never leave belongings close to a fireplace or space heater. Our agency offers all types of insurance (home, auto, life, health, business, retirement accounts, and supplemental accounts). If you have a need for a specific type of insurance, we can find a company to write it! Many companies give discounts for adding additional insurance policies to your current insurance policy with us. If you are looking for an easy way to lower your premium, this may be the best bet. We can quickly quote the additional policies, and many companies give 10-15% discounts for adding additional policies with them (on top of any money that we can save you on the new policy).

Insurance Tip of the Month Homeowners policies do not cover liability for business operations that are ran out of your home. Many entrepreneurs run businesses out of there homes (contractors, limo services, internet sales, etc). These business owners need a separate commercial general liability policy to cover the liabilities that arise from their commercial operations. If you own business autos, you need to make sure that you also schedule any owned trailers on the policy as well. Business auto insurance is different from personal auto insurance because the liability for trailers is not automatically covered under the policy if the trailer is pulled by a commercial auto. Also, all commercial auto clients need to remember to report all drivers of their autos before they drive. Personal auto policies allow you to give permission to anyone to drive your auto and still have coverage. However, with commercial autos, the driver must be reported to the insurance company before coverage is granted on that driver.

Insurance Product of the Month Annuities allow you to place money into a savings/retirement account, so you will be able to use the money at a later date. The money gains interest while it is sitting in an account. You can place up to $5,000 per year into this annuity account. All money placed into the account is pre-tax, so it lowers your taxable income. The money is taxed when it is withdrawn from the account. Most annuities allow you to withdraw the money at any time. However, there are penalties for withdrawal within the first ten years of the policy. These annuities are very good for retirement income, helping a child set up a college education fund, or even helping with buying a new house or car. The money can be placed into your account at your discretion. You can either mail a check for payment whenever you like, or you can have a specified amount of money withdrawn from your account monthly, quarterly, or annually. Each company pays a different interest rate, so if you are interested please let us know and we will find the best annuity for your specific need!

Insurance Tip of the Month If you have customized or altered your auto in any way that increases the value of the vehicle, please let us know so we can add the changes to your current policy. This will ensure that you get paid the correct amount for any fullcoverage (comprehensive or collision) claims that you may have. If you do not report these changes, the insurance company will pay the claim based on a standard model auto instead of the new customized value of your auto. Installing a monitored alarm system in your home (fire and burglar alarm) will not only make your home safer. It also gives you a significant discount on your homeowners insurance as well. Be sure to insure any recreational vehicles such as boats, jet skis, ATV’s, golf carts, etc. Insuring these items extends liability coverage to them in case someone gets hurt while riding them or if the driver causes damage to someone else’s property or injures someone.

Happy New Year!!!!

Insurance Product of the Month Disability insurance pays you a portion of your salary if you are unable to work for an extended period of time due to either illness or injury. This allows you to have a steady income even if you are not able to work. Disability policies usually pay about 65% of your lost income, so you will be able to pay bills until you are able to work again. Nearly 1 in every 3 people will become disabled for a period of time. This product gives you enough time to get back on your feet without losing everything. Most people do not save enough money to make all of their payments for an extended period of time. If you are injured at work, worker’s comp may pay a portion of this disability coverage. However, if you are excluded from worker’s comp or if you are injured or become ill while not at work, you will need a disability policy to cover the lost income that will occur. Disability policies are generally inexpensive (but they are based on your annual income and what type of job you have). Call us or send us an email if you are interested in a quote.

Most people do not realize that you can get “full coverage on your homeowners insurance as well. Homeowners insurance covers your home, your possessions, detached buildings, and your personal liability. However, you can also get insurance for your mortgage to ensure that your mortgage is paid off if something happens to you before the loan is completely paid. This coverage is called mortgage protection insurance. Since most loans run 15 or 30 years, we can write a policy that will pay off your loan entirely in case one of the owners of the home passes aways. After your home loan is paid off, you can drop the coverage or use it to cover another home that has a mortgage on it. Premiums are generally very low, and they can be paid monthly by bill by mail or through deduction of your checking account. Let us know if you are interested in getting full coverage on your home!

Reminders

We have a local number for our metro Atlanta clients. Please call 404 380--1122 if you do not have long distance coverage on your phone.. Our fax number is 706 749-1300. If you are one of our commercial clients with general liability and/or worker's comp coverage, please give us a call if you believe that your payroll or gross sales amounts will be higher than what we original predicted when writing your policy. We want to make sure that you do not have additional money due to the insurance company after your audit.

If you add any type of structure on your property that is detached from your home, you need to make sure that your homeowners insurance will properly cover the detached structure. Most homeowner’s policies give 10% of the home’s coverage for detached structures. Examples include swimming pools, detached garages, pool houses, storage barns, etc. If the value of these detached structures is more than 10% of your home’s value, than we need to add coverage onto the policy to sufficiently cover these detached items. People who own boats, jet skis, 4 wheelers, and ATV’s need at least a liability policy on these items in case someone gets hurt while using them or damages someone else’s property while using these items. Most people do not insure these recreational vehicles unless they want full coverage. However, a liability only policy on these vehicles will ensure that you are not liable to pay out of pocket for medical bills, lost wages, and property damage resulting from an at-fault accident.

AFLAC has a cancer supplemental product available that helps pay additional expenses that your health insurance company does not pay. These supplemental expenses include travel expenses to treatment centers, $5,000 for getting diagnosed, lost wages, and other unexpected expenses. The company also has an endorsement that allows you to get all of your premiums paid back if you do not have to use this insurance plan within 20 years. This is a great plan because studies show that 1 in 3 people will get some type of cancer in their lifetime. Health insurance does not pay all of the expenses, and this plan would help out with all of the additional expenses and deductibles that are involved in cancer treatment. Rates are very inexpensive and there are no medical tests involved. Call us for a quote today!

Most people think of auto insurance coverage as having “liability only” or “full coverage”. However, few people understand the details of their auto insurance coverage. Below are some of the details of the coverage that your auto insurance policy offers. 1)Liability coverage – Pays for medical bills, lost wages, legal to legal fees, ambulance fees, and property/auto damage to the the the other parties involved when you are at-fault for the accident. By accident. This is the only coverage that is mandatory by law the law in the State of Georgia. Keep in mind that the minimum not minimum coverage that the state requires is oftentimes not enough car enough if you seriously hurt someone or cause a multi-car accident. We recommend much higher limits. 2)Uninsured to Uninsured Motorists coverage – We add this coverage to all pays all auto policies as well. Pays your medical bills and pays to or to repair your car if you are hit by an uninsured driver or if you are in an accident with a hit-and-run driver. 3)Medical medical Medical Payments Coverage – Helps pay your medical bills if you are at-fault for the accident. 4)Comprehensive Full Coverage – Pays to repair your car if nobody tree nobody is at fault for the accident (you hit a deer, a tree falls on your car, hail damage, water damage, etc) 5)Collision Full Coverage – Pays to repair your car if you are by are at-fault for the accident. (you cause the accident by running into another auto). Keep in mind that if someone else causes the accident, your medical bills AND auto insurance auto repairs are covered by their auto insurance regardless of whether you have full coverage on your car.

IRA's are investment accounts that allow you to put money aside in an account that gains interest for the future. IRA's are a good source of future income for retirement or other future needs such as helping start a college fund for a child or helping to pay for a child's car when they reach driving age. toage. Federal regulations allow you to place up to $money$5,000 per year into these accounts and any money placed in the account helps lower your taxable income. You are only charged taxes on the money when you get it out of the account. You are free to get the money out of the account at any time. However, there are penalties for the first 10 years, but the penalties decrease each year that you have the money in the account. Insurance Tip of the Month Our agency attempts to write all homeowners policies with the broadest coverage available. However, most home insurance policies exclude coverage for earthquakes and floods. The reason is that earthquake coverage has to be added onto the policy as an endorsement, while flood coverage is bought separately as part of a government flood program policy. If you feel that you need coverage for earthquake or flood, please let us know so we can make sure that you have this coverage. Luckily we have very few earthquakes in Georgia, so most people would want to exclude the additional premium for that coverage anyways. If you are located in a flood zone, your mortgage company will probably require you to buy a flood policy (even though your home can still flood if you are outside of a flood zone). On another note, if you have a commercial auto policy, please be sure to report all drivers of your vehicles BEFORE they drive your autos. Most business auto policies require reporting of all drivers.

`

With the summer outdoor season about to start, please make sure that your boats and jet skis are insured (at least for liability and uninsured boaters coverage). We recommend insuring all watercraft with these coverages because homeowners/renters insurance policies often exclude coverage for your liability when you are operating anything with an engine (This is why car insurance is a separate policy from homeowners insurance). When on the water, you need coverage in case you cause an accident that either hurts someone else or causes property damage to someone else's boat, dock, etc. With the cost of repairing boats, medical bills, lost wages, ambulance fees, and legal fees, it would be a good idea to pay a little premium each year to possibly save yourself from a financial disaster. Many people who have umbrella policies oftentimes do not know that the umbrella will not cover their liability exposure unless they have a policy for that particular exposure (reason why you need a boat policy in order to be covered for additional liability under your umbrella). Uninsured boaters coverage pays to fix your boat and pays your medical bills when you are in an accident with a boater who does not have liability insurance. Since the State of Georgia does not require people to buy boater's insurance, there are a lot of uninsured on the water.

Make sure that your home has a fire extinguisher and working smoke detectors. Most home owners policies give discounts for having these items because they help limit the damage caused by fires. It is always good to have a fire extinguisher near the kitchen, while it is recommended to have at least one smoke detector per every 500 square feet of living space. Check the batteries on the smoke detectors at least once every six months (a good reminder is to check the batteries during the time changes during the fall and spring).

Long term care insurance helps protect your family's financial stability in case someone needs assistance from a nursing home or assisted living facility. According to multiple sources, the average cost for 5 years of full-time assisted living care is over $300,000 per person. This cost will only continue to increase in the future, so it is very easy to see how this could cause a financial burden to the family. Since people are living longer, this increases the likelihood that someone in the family may need assisted living care. Long term care insurance allows you to help your family financially if you ever need their help in the future with assisted living/ nursinghome monthly payments.

Also, it may help you with any future home claims if you will walk through the home with a video recorder and briefly talk about the items in the home (how much it costs, when you got it, etc). This will help ensure that all items are paid for in case of a total loss such as fire or tornado since it will be very hard to remember everything that you owned inside of a home if a claim occurs. Keep the video at another location outside of your home, so you will be able to access it if needed.

Long term care insurance premiums are based on your age, medical history, and amount of monthly benefit that you would like. Call us for a quote for this very important insurance product.

Reminders Thank you for your business! We will be closed half the day on Thursday July 3rd and all day on Friday July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Please access our website if you need emergency billing and claims numbers during non-working hours. These numbers can also be found on your policy or on the back of your auto ID cards.

Insurance Tip of the Month If a homeowners claim occurs, most companies will ask you to list the possessions in your home in order for an accurate claims payment to be made. It is almost impossible to remember everything that you owned inside of your home if a major disaster occurs. An essay way to keep up with your possessions is to either video record or take photographs of each room in your home. Briefly talk about what each item is and how much you paid for it ( or write it on the back of the photographs). This will help you to accurately list your possessions for a claims payment. Update the list every few years from your home (at a family members home, safe deposit box, etc.) because you do not want to lose this info if your home is destroyed. Most home owner's policies give specified limits of coverage for collectibles (guns, jewelry, furs, etc.) Generally, between $1000 and $5000 in coverage is given. If you have a large or expensive collections of these collectibles, pleas let us know so we can accurately list them on the policy to ensure the correct claims payment if a claim occurs.

Insurance Product of the Month AFLAC's cancer supplement plan starts making payments directly to you if anyone on the policy is diagnosed with any type of internal cancer. These payments help pay for the unforeseen costs associated with cancer treatment such as travel expenses, lost wages, and your health insurance deductible. AFLAC pay the money directly to the insured, and you can use the money for whatever you would like. This is a great supplement to your health insurance policy. You can even buy an additional rider that will pay you all of your premiums back in 20 years if you don't use this policy. This is the only that I know of that will pay your money back if you don't use it! Let us know if you would like a quote. Most cancer supplement plans are very affordable.

Why Universal Group Life Can Help Your Business Visit us at www.lakesidecoverage.com Thank you for your business! Benefits of Group Universal Life Insurance NO medical testing for each person Pay the same price every year…Premium does not increase each year (Helps you budget) Permanent Coverage (Term Life Insurance is not permanent because the premiums increase dramatically when you are older) Does not costs the business any money Excellent way to offer your employees an additional benefit to lure and keep workers. Very affordable Portions of your premium gain “cash value” which can be taken out of your account in the future by you and used for anything. Your cash value is basically an account that gains interest (some companies offer up to 12% or more interest).

What Is Universal Life Insurance? Most people split life insurance products into two categories (term and permanent). A majority of employees have term insurance through their employers (if they have anything at all)! We feel that this is not the best course of action for employees because term insurance oftentimes becomes too expensive when the person is older and actually needs the life coverage in place. For instance, a 30 year term allows you to pay the same low premium for 30 consecutive years. However, on the 31st year, the premium is based on your age at that time (which is 30 years older than you were when you started the policy). The premium dramatically increases every year afterwards. Universal life is more expensive than term while at a younger age. The two reasons are: 1) Universal Life never increases in premium 2) Part of your premium gains interest, which you can later take out of the account. The universal life policy guarantees that you will have coverage in place when your family needs to pay burial costs, pay off loans, mortgages, car

payments, taxes, etc. A lot of people do not take out life insurance because of the medical testing. If 10 or more of your employees start policies, there is no medical testing! How do we get group universal life insurance in our business? Contact our office through (706) 749-1606 or by email through our website at www.lakesidecoverage.com We can quickly quote your group with multiple life insurance providers to ensure that your employees are getting the best rates possible. We only need a list of employees, DOB, and their smoker or non smoker status to get a tentative quote.

Health Insurance can oftentimes be very difficult to understand. Keep in mind that most health insurance policies (not all) allow you to pay a doctor's copay when you attend the doctor's office for minor medical procedures such as a routine checkup, cold, etc. When your doctor refers you outside of the office, than your procedures are now considered major medical and a deductible must first be paid by you each year before the company starts paying for any additional procedures. Examples of major medical include lab work, x-rays, CAT scans, surgery, and hospitalization.

Refer a friend or family member to our agency for the rest of this year and receive a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant or store of your choice if we write the account. Please either let us know the person's name who would like a quote or tell them to let us know that you referred them so we can give you credit. If we can write the account while saving your friend/family money on their insurance needs, than it is only fair to reward you as well. Its a win-win situation for everyone!

Once the deductible is paid, than you are only responsible for the coinsurance percentage (usually between 20%-40%) of the remaining bill until you reach your annual out of pocket maximum. The most that you will pay per year is the deductible plus the annual out of pocket maximum. Once you have reached this amount, the insurance company will pay 100% of all remaining bills for the rest of the year. Keep in mind that PPO plans give you coverage outside of your network as well, but you often must pay more out of pocket for being out of network.

Insurance Tip of the Month

Insurance Product of the Month

When you look at the high costs of medical bills, lost wages, and attorney fees for lawsuits, you may realize that your liability limits are not high enough on your homeowner’s policy. You can increase your homeowner’s liability up to $1 million (which does not increase the premium a lot). If you want more than $1 million in liability, you will have to buy a separate umbrella policy (which will also add additional liability coverage to your auto and boat policies as well). Let us know if you want to increase your liability limits on your home policy. We try to automatically quote at least $300,000 in coverage.

Insurance Tip of the Month Most recreational vehicles require their own policies if you want your liability covered while using them. Jet Skis, Boats, ATV's, and golf carts are common recreational vehicles that are generally not covered under your homeowners insurance. Since these vehicles are mobile, most homeowners policies exclude liability while you are operating them. These policies are very inexpensive (usually around $100 per year). You also have the option to purchase “full coverage” which pays to repair your recreational vehicle if it is damaged. If you have any of these items, you may want to look into a policy to ensure that your liability risk is adequately covered.

Insurance Tip of the Month Health insurance is often confusing for a lot of people due to the variables involved with most claims. These variable include if you are “in-network or out of network, if the procedure is considered major medical or minor medical, and if the plan is an HMO, PPO, or POS plan. Basically, all health insurance plans are an HMO, PPO, or POS plan. Here are the differences:

1) HMO plan: These policies are the least expensive but also offer less options than the PPO or POS plans. You must pick a primary doctor who you will see for most medical problems. This doctor must refer you to a specialist if you need specialist care. You do not have a lot of flexibility as to which specialist you visit because HMO plans do not cover you when you are out of network. You must stay innetwork to have coverage under your policy.

Insurance Product of the Month We have three health insurance companies in our office that offer multiple products based on your needs. Our health insurance companies offer short-term medical coverage (if you are waiting to be added onto your company's health plan, currently in between jobs, etc). They also offer health savings accounts, which allow you to place money into an account that has tax benefits. These health savings accounts are high deductible plans that are good for people who want lower deductibles, are willing to pay small medical costs out of pocket, and who want tax benefits on their health insurance premiums.

2) PPO Plan- These plans cover you both innetwork and out-of-network. Your coverage is better in-network. However, you do not have to get referrals to see specialists. This plan offers more flexibility than an HMO because you have access to more health care providers. 3) POS Plan- This plan is a mix between an HMO and PPO. You pick a primary care doctor who you see for most medical situations. However, you also will have coverage whether you stay in-network or go out-of-network.

Insurance Tip of the Month Personal auto policies require that you report anyone with a drivers license living in your household as a potential driver for your vehicle. If this household resident will ever drive your vehicle, than they should be listed on your policy as a resident driver, and the policy premium will be affected by their driving record. If the household resident will never drive your vehicle, than you can report them as a household resident, but you can also exclude them from driving. In this case, their driving record will not affect your premium because you are excluding them from driving your vehicle. In either case, you should always report anyone living with you who has a driver's license. This will ensure that all claims are covered by the insurance company. Please keep in mind that the scenario is different if the potential driver of your vehicle does not live with you. If the driver lives at another location, they can drive your vehicle without notification to the company as long as they have your permission and as long as they are not a regular driver of your vehicle.

Insurance Tip of the Month Please remember that most homeowners policies do not include coverage for flood damage. Recent floods in our state have made it important to remind our policyholders that flood coverage is available under a separate flood policy. These policies are generally inexpensive, but may provide much needed coverage if you live in an area that is flood-prone. Anyone living in low lying areas or near a creek or river may want to call us for a flood insurance quote.

Insurance Product of the Month Umbrella policies help cover you when you are liable for someone else's property damage or bodily injury. Your liability may include payment to repair someone else's vehicle, pay their medical bills and lost wages, attorney's fees, and punitive damages. An umbrella policy gives excess liability coverage on top of your other insurance policies. The umbrella policy will start paying when the liability coverage is maxed out on your auto, home, boat, jetski, ATV, or any other policy. Please keep in mind that you must have an underlying policy before the umbrella will pay the excess damages. For instance, if are sued due to an accident that you caused in a boat, you must have a boat insurance policy in place before the umbrella will pay. An umbrella never pays “first damages. This policy only pays after the underlying policies limits are maxed out.
