DISCOVERY BAY

Discovery Bay Discovery Bay is a international community located on the north eastern coast of Lantau Island there are residential estates and private and recreational facilities in DB. Discovery Bay has a population of sixteen thousand residents most of them are expatriates from over thirty countries. DB is 2km away from Disney Land, which makes it convenient for the residents to go over to Disney Land when Hong Kong Resorts (Owners of Discovery Bay) establish a ferry system. Discovery Bay is 12km west from the Hong Kong Island, DB coordinates are 22°17′44″N 114°00′59″E. Discovery Bay is composed of 13 residential development phases ranging from houses with gardens to high-rise apartments. It started in 1982 and there is no confirmed year for the ending of the developmental phases. Some of the development includes a 400 metre long privately owned beach, four membership clubs including the Golf Club, Marina Club, Residents Club and Siena club. There are natural streams and rock pools that people go to when it is too hot to do anything else. There are many sports facilities in DB including an astro-turf football pitch, basketball courts, a number of children's playgrounds scattered around the developments and hiking paths leading to other parts of Lantau Island. The lack of public recreational facilities is a dissatisfaction of the residents as the original plan said it would provide three hundred thousand square metres of such facilities. DB is the second most populated district after the town of Tung Chung in Lantau, unlike most developments in Hong Kong pets are allowed in Discovery Bay whereas most of the other developments in Hong Kong tend to ban them.

Map of Discovery Bay

The map of Discovery Bay above includes a scale and legend. The scale is located in the bottom left corner and shows the ratio of the image compared to the actual place. It shows that the given distance is equivalent to 576 meters in real life. In the top right had corner, there is a circle that shows that the top of the image is to the north. This is called the orientation of the map. There is a legend underneath the map, it show what the icons mean. To the south of Discovery Bay you will see a cluster of icons. This is the Discovery Bay plaza. There are many shops and restaurants there as well as supermarkets and a movie rental. The bus terminals and ferry pier are also located in the plaza.

Movement within Discovery Bay Movement within DB is different to most Hong Kong communities. It is a fairly small area so everywhere is within walking distance. There is a ferry service that goes between DB and central. Many people take this ferry to get to work every day. The bus service within Discovery Bay is efficient and reaches every phase of the bay. The busses go around every 10 minutes depending on the route. There are 9 buses that go to different parts of DB. All of the busses go via the DB plaza, making it the heart of the community.

DB Bus

Discovery Bay is such a unique place because everything is in walking distance which makes it very convenient for the residents of DB. It only takes 30 minutes to get from one side of DB to the other. Lots of people in DB don't use public transportation they usually walk even if they are carrying heavy groceries. Bikes are also used to get around DB, mainly the kids use them. It’s very safe to ride a bike around Discovery Bay,

Ferry that goes from Central to DB there are cycling tracks that go on the main road and you can also ride on the road if you are confident. There are no privately owned cars in DB. The only forms of motor-transport are busses, hire cars and golf carts. In Discovery Bay it’s very hard to get a golf buggy. The permit itself, costs around 1 million Hong Kong dollars. Then you have to add the price of the golf cart which is around 25 thousand dollars. And on top of that, there are only a limited amount of permitted licenses allowed in DB so people are willing to pay more to ensure they get a permit because the waiting list is very long. They are very convenient to have because if you want to take the bus, you have to go to the plaza then wait for the next bus to come etc. Whereas if you have a golf buggy you can go straight to your destination and back quickly and easily, however the golf buggies are only limited to DB. Some residents think they are unsafe because there are no doors and they have a short wheelbase. There are plastic curtains that can be rolled down to provide protection from the weather but otherwise there are no safety features onboard. There are no airbags or ABS, making it quite hazardous to drive. Residents of Discovery Bay can use the hire car service which operates as a point-to-point minibus shuttle service. The hire car service in Discovery Bay is ridiculous as it costs $15 for a trip and $25 after 7pm.  There are some cases of extortion; the hire car drivers charge more than the usual price. There was one case where a lady took a hire car at 1am and the driver charged her $50.

They have cameras in the hire cars but they are pointed at the passengers not the dashboard so they don’t know how much the drivers charge. The hire car drivers always go full speed even though there is an indicator that tells them to slow down. The cars themselves are not very large or luxurious, they seat six people but it can be a bit of a squeeze at times. The rear seats can be folded down to create more room in the boot for luggage. Movement in and out of DB is easy for commuters but a lot harder for transporters bringing goods in and out of the community. There is a road that goes to Tung Chung connected by a tunnel and a toll gate. Anyone trying to get into DB by car must ask ahead and contact HKR before entering. The ferry offers a much easier way into the quiet suburban community. It runs every day and has a schedule that is easily available at the pier. Recently, HKR who manage Discovery Bay have changed the schedule so that there are fewer ferries during rush hours when most people commute to and from central for work. Many residents complained but HKR has a reputation for not listening to the resident’s opinion.
