Rabbi’s Word | Rabbi Pete What is a Synagogue?

A

ccording to the Jewish Encyclopedia, ‘…the origin of the synagogue, in which the congregation gathered to worship and to receive the religious instruction connected therewith, is wrapped in obscurity.’

The idea of a communal building at the heart of a Jewish community dates back to the construction of the Temple some three thousand years ago, and the establishment of synagogues began while the Second Temple still stood. It is likely that these communal institutions served as places of gathering for Jewish communities living some distance from Jerusalem (in Babylon or Alexandria for example) as early as the second century BCE as places of gathering and, perhaps, study. When the Temple was destroyed by the Romans in the year 70 CE, the synagogue became the focal point for prayer (envisaged by

the rabbis as a temporary substitute for sacrifice) as well.

Thus it was that, as the Jews were scattered far and wide across the world, the establishment of a synagogue as a focal point for the Jewish community wherever it found itself became the norm. Members of the community would take responsibility for establishing a building in which members of the community could pray, study, celebrate festivals and life-cycle events, and come together as a group of like-minded Jews.

So it was that a group of dedicated people came together in the late1960s to consider the creation of a Liberal Jewish community in our little corner of South-West Hertfordshire (though, as you will read in Hakol, it actually began in Stanmore). What is now The Liberal Synagogue Elstree will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in

2019 and those currently charged with leading it are looking at ways of marking this occasion, including the possibility of some major renovation of the sanctuary.

With this in mind, this issue of Hakol is dedicated to the history and development of the Grade II listed building that has been our home since the mid-1970s. I hope you will enjoy and be impressed by these stories of how a number of dedicated volunteers have made it possible for today’s shul members to have a building in which our Liberal Jewish practices and values can find a home. And I hope also that these stories will encourage you to be part of the next stage of the life of this community and the building at its heart as we pass the milestone of our fiftieth anniversary and enter a new phase of the life of this community.

Fairwell from Student Rabbi Danny Dear Friends, I would like to begin with a big thank you. Thank you!!!! Thank you for all the kindness, openness, warmth and love you have shown me ove r the past year. I have felt truly welcomed into your com munity and it has been an eno rmous privilege to have sung with you, studied with you, spent time in quiet with you and to have prayed with you in your beautif ul and sacred spaces.

I have particularly enjoyed spe nding time with such a wide ran ge of people in your community: the young, the elderly, the sick, the well, the engaged couples, the middle aged couples and single people, the toddlers, the teenagers and the children, those who are thriving and those who are struggling.

I have very much enjoyed teachin g (or, more accurately, facilita ting) our fortnightly Adult Education class where we have been in deep engagement with chapter 2 of Pirkei Avot, one of our most important and seminal texts.

It might have been written by our spiritual ancesto rs almost 2,000 years ago, but its teachings and its resonance speak to us tod ay in ways that we have found uplifting, challenging, enlightening and revealing. As Liberal Jews, we know that the se texts belong to us and to our future descendan ts and it is our job, even our res ponsibility, to make these texts come alive and to speak to us today.

It has been a privilege to have worked with some of the younge r members of the community. I particularly enjoyed one religion school clas s with the pre-bnei mitzvah kids where we took out the Torah scroll and explored why there were spaces in some places, why it was written on parchment, wha t was special about the ink. It was so wonderful to see these children actually eng age with Torah (la’asok b’divrei Torah) up clos e and personal and to take own ership of Torah. They enjoyed the physical act of hol ding Torah so much that they didn’t want to let it go at the end of class! The family dinners on Friday night I have helped facilitate have been really fun with the younge r people leading the rituals of lighting the candles, saying Kiddush and Hamotzi and teaching us lots of new songs!

The monthly contemplative ser vices have been a real highligh t for me. It has been very special to help create a spa ce where a group of us have felt safe enough to share our concerns with others , to cry out to the Eternal in son g and in silence and to open our hearts to allow in the divine energy that animate s all life.

A special thank you to Rabbi Pet e who has mentored me this yea r with such love, open-heartedness, humour and kindness. I have learned so mu ch from being with him, from watching him and from his feedback. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how lucky you are to be served by such a special rabbi.

One final thought to leave you with. I think that the service in the main hall feels much more intimate when the chairs are set out in a semi-ci rcle and the chairs that will not be needed are rem oved. It’s always better to add chairs when people arrive than to have empty cha irs!

Welcome to our new council members!

Over the past 12 months we can report the following statistics: • 8 B’nei mitzvah.

• There were 3 participants in the 2015 Kabbalat Torah group.

• We celebrated 4 Jewish weddings, • 2 mixed faith blessings and 4 baby blessings, • Sadly we also said farewell to 10 synagogue members who passed away in the last year.

• We welcomed a total of 42 new members including Friends and children • 14 of our members resigned during the year • Our current membership stands at 528 adults (including 36 Friends of the Synagogue and 4 Associate Members) and we have 188 children aged between 0 and 20.

Grace & Albert, our outgoing caretakers have moved on after 11 years with us and we presented them with a hamper as a token of appreciation for all their hard work behind the scenes.

We welcome Christine and Caitlan Petriman, who have joined us as our new caretakers and cleaners.

Finding synagogue council members continues to be a challenge. With fulltime jobs taking people away from home and young families to look after, those members who have shown a genuine interest in getting more involved, find that logistically they just cannot make a mid week evening meeting work with other commitments. Recognising the difficulty some of our members have voiced, and building on the work carried out during 2015 to focus on the Social, Education and Care & Welfare areas of our community, we believe we have made it easier for more people to get involved, by introducing a new structure for our Council meetings. We now hold our Council meetings every month alternating a Wednesday evening meeting one month with a Sunday afternoon meeting the following month. Our focus on creating smaller groups, working on specific tasks will continue throughout 2016.

• Renovation of the main sanctuary and painting the outside of the building – we are currently gathering information and putting together a Renovation Party to work on this.

So to summarise, 2016 is about making sure the heart of the community, our people, are properly supported by our infrastructure.

Caretakers You may have noticed that our synagogue is looking a lot cleaner lately.

As of May 1st we formally welcomed our new cleaner / caretakers in the form of Christine and Caitlan Petriman.

You are quite likely to bump into them on your visits to the Synagogue. They come in on a Wednesday or Thursday, depending on what is going on during that week, to clean the synagogue, and then at different times over the weekend to ensure we are ready for our weekend events and services.

Sunday culminates in a thorough clean of our entire building, in preparation for the nursery who return every Monday morning, bright and early at 6am.

If you see them around, please do make them welcome.

The History of our Synagogue |

Terry Benson, Building Committee Chairman 1976 - 1983 he synagogue was founded in November 1969, then the Stanmore Liberal Jewish Congregation. Services and meetings were held at Glebe Hall, a scout hut just off Stanmore Broadway. With the bulk of members coming from Hertfordshire it was decided to find a home in the Elstree & Borehamwood area.

After several attempts to find a home we were successful in buying our present home in Elstree.

A Grade 2 listed former Church of England School, built in 1884, the school had been empty for several years but we

eventually secured the building reduced from £50,000 to £24,000. We had £5,000 in our building fund, raising a mortgage against the rest; legally owning the premises outright by 1997.

the required planning permission to make any other changes. All of the wooden floors and joists were rotten so they had to be ripped out and disposed of on a huge bonfire.

With no funds to pay contractors, the members set about refurbishing the entire building themselves, devoting Sunday mornings and often weekday evenings to do whatever was necessary to make the building habitable. The first task was to demolish the outside toilet block to allow separate exit routes, which was essential to get us

Our first big target was to redecorate the rooms in the school house so that Religion School classes could commence on 30th April 1978. To achieve this, a team of three helpers, each under a foreman, were assigned to each of the five rooms.

School to schedule. In the meantime the main members of the Building Committee undertook the major tasks: Laying drains; installing new toilets; cementing new exit routes; completely re-plastering and decorating; rewiring and installing new lights and power sockets and fire alarm systems; installing glass in every window, including the leaded lights at the front of the building; making and fitting grilles to all the side and rear windows; fitting a suspended ceiling in the main hall and laying flooring, were to name but a few of the many tasks that were undertaken.

Our first service was conducted on Friday 1st September 1978

followed by our first Bar Mitzvah the following day. Work continued for a further two years, albeit with a smaller team, fitting central heating, a large kitchen, the Bimah, the wooden ark as we know it today, repairs to the roofs and numerous infrastructure improvements.

Extraordinary, when you think about what was achieved, with sheer determination, hard graft and a true passion for creating our beloved building that still stands and serves our needs today, nearly 50 years on.

As you appreciate it is not possible to name every member and nonmember that contributed to this effort, but I must mention the committee members who stayed the course for several years: Gerry Dickson, Stanley Rosenberg, Gerald Walters and Paul Dworkin, sadly who are no longer with us, together with Peter Merton, Ron Harris, David Westley and myself.

Our Building | Mike Beral

O

ur building dates from 1884 when it was the St Nicholas school, associated with the church next door.

The Liberal Synagogue Elstree acquired it in December 1977 – it was derelict and had been vandalised. We believe the “school house”, now the office, lounge and upstairs youth rooms, may have been the head teacher’s house, and the main building was used as the school itself. It is a Grade II listed building, which means that we have to get permission for anything other than minor repairs and improvements; Historic England require us to protect its characteristics which make it of special historical interest. That designated special interest covers a wide range of features – including our decorative chimneys and

façade, the structure of the roof in the sanctuary and the Kiddush hall, and even the decorative wooden mouldings and panelling.

My favourite illustration of this was when we refurbished the library at the back of the sanctuary, we were planning to replace the rotten wooden wall panelling with “lookalike” MDF sheets. The conservation officer was shocked, and explained that we had to use proper tongue and grooved timber, as the way it moves and cracks the paint is what gives it its character! For the same reason, the original fireplaces have been retained in two rooms upstairs, so that future generations can see how the rooms would have looked when they were built and heated using coal and logs.

Maintaining a building that is 120 years old is a continuing challenge.

Not all modern building techniques work well on an old building, constructed from soft porous bricks and with a damp proof course. Old buildings were designed to breathe; exposed brickwork could get damp but would then dry out again, especially if the windows are not too airtight and the building is not heated to today’s standards.

wall can breathe so it stays dry inside in the Kiddush hall.

In the 38 years since we have owned the building we have continued to update, improve and modernise it. One of the first major projects was in 1989 to refurbish the sanctuary, removing the wallboards, false ceiling and dividing doors which split the space into two – hence “H1” and “H2”, which is why the Kiddush hall is referred to as “H3”.

In 1990 the kitchen was moved from behind the sanctuary to its present location, which was originally an open archway between the two buildings.

1998 saw the building of the foyer, finally integrating the two buildings into one, and dealing with the first of what were to be three different outbreaks of dry rot. The two original

In 2000, the sliding doors were added at the back of the sanctuary, bringing our total seating capacity for larger events (especially b’nei mitzvah) to 160 congregants. The upstairs of the schoolhouse was renovated in 2008, and the most recent major works were completed in 2012 when the Kiddush hall was redesigned, with lowered ceiling panels, versatile lighting, child safe radiators and a full audio visual system. Unfortunate and unplanned were the works needed to eradicate another outbreak of dry rot in 2014, as a result of which the bimah was reconstructed with its Southern Pine handrails and wheelchair access

ramp.

The changes in legislation, sophistication of building techniques and people’s time mean that it is no longer feasible to do major projects using volunteers, but we still rely on a small group of Members who are prepared to give up a few hours on an occasional basis to do minor repairs and improvements.

Rabbi Pete refers to us as the elves – they appear magically and get things done, without making a fuss and without other people even realising they have happened. Volunteers are also essential when we commission major projects, to research, design and specify the works needed, to find and manage contractors, and to help with necessary fundraising.

Additional elves are always welcome, and refreshments are always on hand.

The Jews of Pisa | Tina Shaw

O

n our return from holiday in Tuscany, we spent a few hours in the overrun tourist area of Pisa. Not too far from the main centre, amongst the backstreets in the Via Palestro 24, is the synagogue, originally built in 1595, and remodeled in 1785 & 1863.

Pisa may be the first city in the Tuscan region in which the Jews settled.

(There is no synagogue in nearby Lucca). In 1165 there were 20 families living in Pisa, and there is evidence of Jewish tombstones embedded in the town wall dating to the mid-1200s.

In the 13th century, Pisa

was a bustling centre with a Synagogue near Piazza dei Cavalieri, the political heart of the city, in the area still known as Chiasso de’ Giudei, literally “the alley of the Jews”.

Under the Medici’s rule, Jewish families were encouraged to settle in Pisa so as to boost its economy, and the population kept growing.

The presence of a large community is evidenced by some beautiful landmarks in the city, such as the Synagogue and the incredible Jewish cemetery The Jewish cemetery is one of the best preserved secrets in Pisa. It is located just outside

Piazza dei Miracoli and yet very few people visit it.

In fifteenth century, numerous Jewish families came to the town to start banking enterprises, following the expulsion from Spain, and the community fared reasonably well with a population numbering 700 in 1881. There was no ghetto and Jews seem to have been accepted as full citizens.

In 1931, there were believed to be 535 Jews in the town, many of whom were lost in the Holocaust. Today the community numbers under 200.

Religious Education in Schools Today | Michael Shaw

T

he speaker for the lunch club on 26th April was Helen Hyde D.B.E. the head teacher of Watford Girls Grammar School. A highly respected member of the R.E. community both locally and nationally, the talk was about the high quality of work in this curriculum area at the Girls School. She explained how the subject is compulsory throughout the school from Y7 to the 6th form with a higher than average number of pupils taking “A� level in the subject. She explained the progression

from Y7 onwards and how within each year group the subject is developed and expanded. We were impressed with the way pupils are encouraged to think and challenge their own beliefs as well as those of others.

There is a comprehensive programme of visits to places such as Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank House and museum, as well as Berlin and Krakow.

Dame Helen is a highly respected authority on Holocaust Education.

Her work has taken her to Rwanda ensuring that the pupils are aware of

other genocides in the world. In their final year pupils are encouraged to take on the more difficult challenges to religion such as sexuality, intermarriage and the role of women in religion.

Included in the talk were examples of the excellent work produced by the pupils. After the talk a wide range of questions from the audience were answered with authority and understanding ranging from the changes under Academies to her views on faith schools.

In all a very interesting afternoon that was enjoyed by everyone.
