MEMORY LANE Community of Care Proposal Memory Lane is a Memory Care facility (an assisted living typology specifically tailored to the needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia). Memory Care facilities are typically located on suburban sites secluded from the rest of society. Memory Lane bridges the gap between people with Alzheimer’s disease and the greater community through integration of specific public and private programs in an urban setting. Ecopsychosocial Intervention Memory Lane features a contained walking path called ‘Memory Lane’ which gives the project its name. The path is designed to encourage interaction, stimulation, and independent wandering within a controlled, safe environment. In the medical field, this approach to care is called Ecopsychosocial Intervention; patients are allowed independence, or perceived independence, which allows them to maintain their sense of self and personal value. The design of Memory Lane fully incorporates this philosophy, providing intentional, positive interventions that naturally reduce the stress, anxiety, and paranoia generally associated with Alzheimers disease.

A Walk Down ‘Memory Lane’

‘Memory Lane’ is a contained walking path characterized by a continuous wood floor. Elderly people tend to walk with a downward gaze, so instead of traditional signage indicating the location of amenities, the wood floor acts as a passive wayfinding device. The path leads residents to various programs intended to engage and stimulate their minds and bodies.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America focus their programs around holistic improvement of children and young adults. By viewing typical activities of a Boys and Girls Club through the lens of holistic health, the activities can be separated into categories within the core elements of holistic health: mind, body, and spirit. In The Clearing features open-air follies scattered across the site. Each folly focuses primarily on one element of holistic health. The Spine Connecting these follies both visually and physically is a path system that is comprised of a boardwalk acting as a spine running the length of the site, and secondary paths that finger off towards the edges of the site. Dense trees surround the follies to enhance a sense of arrival and mystery. The trees open up into a very large, perfectly circular clearing designated for group outdoor activities. The diagram below compares the follies on the basis of their size and frequency of use.

POST POCKET Terracotta Mailboxes Entered a competition to design custom mailboxes for the faculty and staff of the architecture department at University at Buffalo. The design was required to attach to the wall and feature terracotta as the primary material. PostPocket aims to integrate four distinct units that are multiplied to produce a collective, thus rethinking the idea of the wall as a push and pull of faceted surfaces. The slanted pockets are designed to hold memos, letters, flyers, and pay checks. The deep pockets are designed for magazines and academic journals. The shallow pockets are designed to hold plants. 1105

The Eyes & The Skin

Sought to create compelling portrait images that demand the viewer’s attention by utilizing visual components that we, as humans, instinctually linger our gaze on for longer than most other things: the eyes and the skin.

Anatomy & Landscape Investigated contrasting elements of the human anatomy and elements found in nature. Landscape features are stripped down to their formal and textural qualities. The human anatomy is then introduced to simultaneously complement and contrast the natural element(s). 14
