MASS HOUSING Rajkot is the forth largest city in Gujarat and most important city of the Saurastra region.It act as an industrial ,economic and educational hub of the region. When Industrial area develops, the city is bound to grow. As the industries grow, it will need employees who will run the industries and this employees need houses to dwell in. A house becomes a dwelling, only when the inhabitant is free to choose the way he wants to live in the house and not the other way round. As dwelling size increases, spaces originate with a specific function. (A)

There are the only two classes of people who in spite of being different, share almost same social believes. They only differ on the basis of size of the family and income to a certain extent. This mixture would complete the sense of community as both of them have same lifestyle which may require dependency on one another and that will act as catalyst for merging them.

Site area is around 1.7 hq. Density: 1200 people/ hq. No. Of Efficient dwelling : 260 -270. No. Of Comfort dwelling :170 -180.

The site is located near Mavdi village, which is off 150 ring road. It is located on the edge of a major road which will act as a connector to the two ring road in future. It is surrounded by two other secondary road and a school on other side. The area has major residential character , having small shops of daily requirements and few small scale industries. Major city level amenities such as police station , fire station , hospital and etc. are located within 1km radius of the site. Both the major industrial areas of Rajkot, Metoda and Shapar are located within 15km radius of the site.

Rajkot is being transformed into educational hub being heart of Saurastra. It is also a mechanical hub of India. Due to this growth more and more youth are migrating to Rajkot. There are very less buffer spaces for such class of people where there can spend their extra time or they can gather and have exchange their thoughts. However , as population increases city grows with that but amenities are not sufficient to serve the population of city. Hence forth giving a space where they can learn hobbies and also get entertain. When city grows above one limit, distance between places increase so people can’t afford to visit such places in such urban life style. We have to define such pockets where people get leisure and entertainment at different level.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

Exhibition space for vinntage car , Gondal to unders


The study includes the understanding of space and structure. During the academic exercises, a repeated question kept on recurring about the relationship between them. Space is made of various elements, structure being one of the most important of them. Structure regulates the form of a building which in turn affects the quality of space. This relationship forms the basis of this study. The study will initially brief about the elements which make a space and then concentrate on structure as an element. It then talks about the changes brought in a space by changing the structure or its materials. Various cases are studied to understand how space making may have affected selection of structure and vice-versa. Based on this understanding a program was generated to translate this understanding into architecture. Various other cases of car museums are studied to help in deriving required areas for the exhibition space. The final design was made based inferences generated from all the studies.

WORKING DRAWING The program of the studio guided the choice of materials and construction technique. As the site was present in the narrow lanes of the old city of Rajkot, it was not possible to implement normal construction practices, hence cast in situ was not possible. Thus one had to try out other options of precast and prefabricated systems which were easy to transport and assemble.
