Malia Fononga Host, Bubba Gump’s I think this job is super fun. As a host you can be outside blowing bubbles, as well as inside talking to customers, making them feel good about where they’re eating. I’ve worked here about eight or nine months. The reason why I was looking for a job was because I wanted to get stuff that was over my allowance. I’m an average teen looking for a laid-back job that’s not McDonald’s— not to hate on McDonald’s people. Since I started this job, it’s not as laid back as I thought it was. To be honest, my first day on the job I wore the wrong uniform. By the second time I came in I was ready to work and everything was perfect. Now I’m a certified trainer. When rookies come in I can train them. At first it was pretty scary but I tried my best. Thank heavens he passed. There are four positions you have as a host: boards, which takes names and quotes customers a time for their wait, barker, which attracts people to come in, floor, which is seating, and cleaning tables between guests. Each time we come in we do a different position so we don’t get bored. That’s what Bubba Gump’s is, a variety of things. You’d never think that a restaurant has bubbles. We’re very entertaining. We have a ping-pong table where kids can play while they’re waiting. They have great food. I’ve tried garlic bread at other places and this is my favorite. Probably because it’s very juicy, like my mom’s home-cooked meals. I come from the Tongan culture and we have juicy pigs at the luau for a family reunion. In the future, I want to get a business degree and start a business here for teenagers. Growing up here, everything is for toddlers and adults, nothing in the middle. That’s why we ride skateboards all day and get into trouble. We don’t even have an amusement park. I want to start a place where teenagers can always go and there will be different things. MTW
