Hemp, Hemp, Hooray!

WHAT’S HEMPENING? Well, it’s Hemp History Week. That means it’s the time of year to list some facts that bear repeating, without sounding like a freshman who just discovered weed isn’t everything they told us in health class. Here are the basics: -The earliest known woven fabric was made from hemp, which began to be cultivated around 8,000-7,000 B.C. -The first cannabis law in America was enacted in 1619, in Jamestown Colony, Virginia, and required farmers to grow hemp.

-Hemp was legal tender in most of the Americas from 1631 until the early 1800s, and you could pay taxes with hemp throughout America for over 200 years.

-Benjamin Franklin started one of America’s first paper mills using hemp, while George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew cannabis on their plantations. The first two drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp.

-Until 1883, 75-90 percent of all paper in the world was made with hemp fiber.

-Until 1937, 70-90 percent of all rope, twine and cordage was made from hemp.

-The hemp plant can be used for soil remediation, biofuel, food, paper, building material and medicine, among other purposes But this is perhaps the most shocking fact about hemp: it is illegal to grow in the United States under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 because of its troubled cousin, marijuana. Marijuana and hemp are both members of the cannabis genus, although hemp contains insignificant amounts of psychoactive cannabinoids (like THC), having been bred over millenia for its fiber and industrial qualities, rather than its dankness.

Even before the Nixon Administration began using this war on drugs as a cover for a war on minorities and hippies, a battle against the cannabis plant had been underway in America for decades. Despite the American Medical Association’s support for access to cannabis-based treatments at the time, The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 placed restrictions on cannabis, both hemp and herb.

Some, like the “Hemperor” Jack Herer claim that William Randolph Hearst, who owned newspaper chains and timber holdings,

influenced the vote to favor wood-pulp paper by publishing articles that played off racial tensions and stoked fears of reefer madness. Hearst’s interests were tangled with DuPont’s, which sold chemicals to process wood pulp and had also developed nylon, a synthetic fiber. Andrew Mellon, U.S. Secretary of Treasury, financially backed DuPont and appointed Harry J. Anslinger to head the newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

To some, this is a conspiracy theory, but it remains that the U.S. government could not justify the tax act with good data and substituted sensational yellow journalism in place of fact.

Dr. William Creighton Woodward, representing the AMA, testified to oppose restrictions on medical cannabis. He believed the herb had applications as a sedative and psychotherapeutic aid, and questioned the claimed links to crime and addiction. “Cannabis is the correct term for describing the plant and its products,” he noted, understanding the connotations behind the racially charged term, “marihuana.”

Times have changed. Despite resistance from the Drug Enforcement Agency, weed is now legal in nine states. After the 2013 cannabis legalization in Colorado, the state began allowing the cultivation of hemp. In 2014, the feds loosened their grip even more, allowing states to begin their own hemp research programs. This April, the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture started accepting licenses to grow hemp under their Industrial Hemp Pilot Program.

The Maui Hemp Institute for Research and Development has been at the forefront of Valley Isle hemp efforts and celebrates Hemp History Week, Maui style. “On Earth

Day in Maui, the first [hemp] seed went in the ground,” Steve Rose, Chief Executive Hempster at the Maui Hemp Institute told me. “We have two test plantings on the island right now which are under state contract.”

The institute advocates for hemp and supports farmers through connections to resources, business leaders and experts. Maui’s weather makes it a natural attraction for growers, who could harvest up to three crops a year under the Maui sun. Additionally, Rose said, “We have such a talent here – let alone from our recreational growers, Maui Wowie and all that – of knowledgeable cannabis growers on this island.

That’s the other resource that companies see.”

“It’s a matter of getting our local talent involved,” he added. Rose emphasized that he tells businesses interested in doing business on Maui that they aren’t trying to reinstitute the plantation system. He talked about how his partner at the Hemp Institute, Lei‘ohu Ryder, has advised cultural affairs to help ensure that what they are doing is pono. “We want to do it right the first time. We have a lot of farmers floating around. Those are people that just want to live off the land and grow their own food; many are educated and don’t really want to be a part of the mainstream. They’re ready to grow hemp,” he said. “One of the test plots is run by one of our local Hawaiian farmers – one of the best farmers on the island. We are helping Hawaiians back into agriculture.”

Rose and the Hemp Institute will spend the week sharing the potential of cannabis at Hemp History events around the island. The possibilities are endless: regenerative agriculture, remediation of soils damaged by industrial agriculture, local entrepreneurship, affordable housing solutions using renewable hempcrete, food for livestock, purification of recycled water, biofuels and more. The Hemp Institute and Maui farmers are eager to test the possibilities.

At the moment, however, they are restricted

by Hawai‘i’s hemp grower licensing process, which requires a $500 fee and only allows for one approved strain of cannabis. This makes it a risky investment for many local farms, as the genetics may be ill-suited for the environment.

Some mainland states, on the other hand, are actively investing in the hemp industry.

“Everyone’s for it,” said Rose, who claimed to have spoken with all the mayoral candidates and councilmembers (excluding Mike White, who will not be up for reelection) about the potential of hemp on the island. The market demand is there too, he added, citing Maui Brewing Co.’s

“It just seems like nobody’s doing anything.

That’s what I encourage people to do: ask the candidates what they plan on doing for hemp.”

“The message is, ‘Get involved,’” Rose concluded. “We can possibly solve our biggest issues on the island with hemp. We can prove it here and then we would be a model for the world. That’s the message I want to get out there.

All we have to do is want to, and get involved.”

COUNTY EMAIL PURGE RECONSIDERED Last week, we reported on a countywide mass deletion of emails over 3 years old. According to the county, departments would be responsible identifying and storing important emails; by June 1, anything not archived would be purged from the system. Motivation for file clearance came from the IT Services Department because of slow access times, County Spokesman Rod Antone told me, and approval came from the administration.

The County of Maui has not responded to a request to comment on how the scheduled deletion would comport with County Code Chapter 2.84, regarding record disposition.

On May 31, following our print article and a community response, we received reports that the mass email purge was canceled. “A lot of people were making some really bad assumptions unfortunately,” Antone told me in an email. “They don’t realize that this proposal came from the head of our IT Division who is not a political appointee. His only agenda is implement an email retention policy just as the other counties and the state has already done.”

A day later, Antone followed up. “So last and final policy on emails, we’re keeping them for ten years. This means the next mayor can check emails all the way back to the last two years of the Tavares administration.”

This is great. Community members spoke out about an action they thought was not in their best interests for transparency and accountability, and the local government responded – credit where credit is due.

But we’re still far from a guarantee of proper record keeping. When I asked Antone whether county employees could still delete emails permanently, he responded that “Departments are responsible for storing important documents. IT does the deletion after they get the go ahead that the necessary documents have been stored.”

If emails are government records, as the county code seems to stipulate, there must be a legal process of review and committee oversight before so much as a baby shower invitation is trashed. With the capacity of technology and the need for public trust in today’s political climate, we should err on the side of safekeeping. comprehensive learning outcomes rooted in Hawai‘i. These outcomes – collectively called Na Hopena A‘o and adopted as policy by the state Board of Education – include a sense of Belonging, Responsibility, Excellence, Aloha, Total Well-Being and Hawai‘i, which spell out BREATH or HA in Hawaiian.

Principals were given sole discretion to develop a selection process, with many involving teachers, counselors and others in discussions about the students in their school.

As part of this honor, all 40 Islander Scholars attended the Islander Scholars Academy at Camp Palehua from June 1 to 3 in Kapolei – a special experience for scholars to learn from each other, participate in ‘aina-based and cultural learning activities, build leadership skills, and make lifelong connections with past Islander Scholars and island leaders.

“I not only learned about students and teachers from all around the pae ‘aina, but I also learned quite a lot about myself,” said 2017 Islander Scholar Paisley Richards, who recently graduated from Halau Ku Mana.

“From discussing personal buried topics to individual leadership qualities in each of the students, I learned how much power each of

for family and community in the same way that our ancestors did for all of us.”

All Islander Scholars are expected to return to their schools and communities in their senior year to uphold the values of the program and to serve as role models for their peers.

STELLA SUPERSTAR OPENS IN WAILUKU Mystery Maui Escape Rooms in Wailuku has opened its second room: the Stella Superstar room. The new room features local celebrity character Stella who has invited players to her home for a private performance. The room features an eerie atmosphere with dolls on display that business owners say provide a creepy yet exciting escape room experience. Mystery Maui’s first room, The Ramen Shop, is also open for reservations.

Mystery Maui is a new, locally-owned small business on the second floor of 81 North Market Street in Wailuku. Games are available starting at 6pm on weekdays and 10:30am on weekends. The center is closed on Mondays.

Games require a minimum of two people and no more than six players for each game.

MAUI STUDENTS NAMED ISLANDER SCHOLARS Four Maui students were among 40 high school juniors statewide who will be honored this summer as their school’s Islander Scholar. The third annual Islander Scholar program recognizes students for their character and commitment to upholding the values of Hawai‘i.

Tia Caulford of Baldwin High School, Marissa Pu of Hana High and Elementary School, Jay Baptista of Lahainaluna High School and Hunter Nahooikaika of Maui High School are the four Islander Scholars representing the best of Maui.

Islander Scholars, created in 2016 by Islander Institute and Malama Learning Center, grew out of a desire to honor students who demonstrate a deep commitment to Hawai‘i and who care for the well-being of their schools, families and communities as much as or more than their own individual pursuits; the criteria for this award goes far beyond typical measures like grades, test scores and extracurricular activities.

“The test for measuring an Islander Scholar is life itself,” said Andrew Aoki, co-founder of Islander Institute and father of two public school students. “These remarkably resilient students are truly educated. They are the product of a whole school community working together to prepare them not just for college, but for leading a positive island life. Islander Scholars give us a glimpse of the full potential of public education in Hawai‘i.”

Hawaiian language educator Kili Namau‘u will be the featured speaker at the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting on June 12 at UH Maui College. The meeting will be held at 5:30 pm in the Pa‘ina Food Court. Following Namau‘u’s presentation, the Honorable Boyd Mossman will install the chamber’s newly elected board and officers for fiscal year 2018-2019.

Namau‘u has been director of the Hawaiian language immersion preschool, Punana Leo o Maui, for 25 years. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Hawaiian Agencies and Organizations.

Punana Leo o Maui is one of 13 preschools in the state under the direction of ‘Aha Punana Leo, Inc., an educational nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of the Hawaiian language.

The language immersion schools have become a model for early learning in an endangered indigenous language. Punana Leo o Maui was founded in 1987 and currently serves 30 children and their families.

The school is accredited by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium and the NAEYC. “Indigenous languages around the world are going extinct at an alarming rate,” said Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce President Teri Freitas Gorman. “People may believe it doesn’t personally affect them, but that’s just wrong.

that is transmitted through speech from one generation to the next. There are two official languages in Hawai‘i and Kili’s work ensures this will always be the case.”

During the annual dinner, Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce members will elect a board of directors and officers for the new fiscal year beginning on July 1.

On May 1, as airmen of the 91st Missile Wing Security Forces traversed the gravel back roads of North Dakota between two of the nuclear missile launch sites they are charged with protecting, the back hatch of their truck fell open, allowing a 42-pound metal box of explosive grenade rounds to fall out. Despite deploying more than 100 airmen to walk the entire 6-mile route the team had driven, The Washington Post reported on May 15, the ammunition still hadn’t been found. The Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the box and has alerted local farmers and oil field vendors in the area that the box could be dangerous if damaged.

In Lodi, California, a small black cat took up residence on May 11 on a high ledge near the large outdoor sign of a Chili’s restaurant and thwarted attempts by management, who self-identified as “cat people,” to be rescued. As customers took pictures, Restaurant Cat, as it came to be known, stared down calmly, KTXL TV reported. But when Chili’s employees used a ladder to try to reach it, the cat climbed behind the neon chili pepper and wouldn’t come out, so they left food and water. Presumably it’s keeping the pigeons away.

For two years, Kendra Jackson of Omaha, Nebraska, “had a box of Puffs... everywhere I went,” due to constant sneezing, coughing and nose-blowing that started after she hit her face on the dashboard during a car accident in 2013, she told KETV. Multiple doctors told her allergies were the cause, but eventually she was diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak -- her brain fluid was leaking into her nasal cavity at the rate of about a half-pint a day. In early May, Nebraska Medicine rhinologist Dr. Christie Barnes plugged the small hole between Jackson’s skull and nostrils with her own fatty tissue, giving Jackson the relief she had been seeking for years.

BUT WHY THOUGH? Making good on his promise, Welshman Mark Williams, 43, celebrated his third world snooker championship by conducting the post-match news conference at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, in the buff. Williams, who beat John Higgins of Scotland on May 7, is the event’s oldest winner in 40 years, Reuters noted. “I’m not going to say anything stupid... but to be honest, if I won this next year, I’d cartwheel down here naked,” Williams promised.

DON’T DO DRUGS The Daytona Beach International Airport was briefly evacuated early on May 11 when John Greenwood, 25, caused a ruckus as he rode around the baggage carousel in the nude, trying to get out onto the tarmac, reported News4Jax. Sheriff’s deputies shocked him with a Taser, to which he responded: “We gotta get outta here, there’s a bomb going to go off. I planted a bomb in the bathroom.” After sweeping the airport, officials found no explosives, but Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they did find Greenwood’s clothes in a backpack hidden in a hole in the bathroom wall. Described

by Chitwood as a frequent flyer, Greenwood is known to local law enforcement, and he admitted taking drugs on Thursday night. He faces several charges after the incident.

Six baby squirrels in Elkhorn, Nebraska, found themselves in a sticky situation when their tails became tangled in tree sap and knotted together in their nest. When a man noticed what looked like a six-headed squirrely cluster moving around in a tree, wildlife expert Laura Stastny, executive director of Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, got the call.

Stastny told the Omaha World-Herald that her group sees a case like this every year or so. She covered the squirrels with a towel to calm them and then snipped the fur that held them together.

TO BE SEVENTEEN AGAIN Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley, 25, was arrested on May 11 in Dallas after scamming his way into two Dallas high schools in an apparent effort to relive his basketball career.

Gilstrap-Portley was charged with posing as a 17-year-old student and Hurricane Harvey evacuee so that he could play high school basketball. As Dallas schools welcomed students displaced by the hurricane, Gilstrap-Portley first enrolled at Skyline High School and then at Hillcrest High School, where he was a star on the team (and dated a 14-year-old girl). In fact, high school coaches voted him offensive player of the year. The Dallas Morning News reported that a former coach spotted him at a tournament and alerted Hillcrest’s coach that he had graduated “a time ago.” ■

Scott Kirkland of the legendary electronic music group reflects on 25 years of innovation as he prepares for big his Maui show.

I

n the early 1990s, The Crystal Method came into existence. The original founding duo consisted of Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan. For over 25 years, the two producer-DJs have been pioneers of the American “big beat” genre of electronic music.

Without a doubt, The Crystal Method has always been an electronic music innovator, easily grouped alongside an international collection of artists like The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx and more. Their sound laid a foundation for what various electronic music genres are now, with heavy breakbeats, samples and synthesizer-produced loops and patterns. In addition to numerous albums and compilations released, The Crystal Method’s sound has been featured on video games, movies, T.V. shows, fashion runway shows, commercial advertisements and more. The group has always maintained a unique reverberation, at the same time constantly satiating an international rave scene with fresh and inventive music.

In 2017, Ken Jordan retired from music, but The Crystal Method now soldiers on led by founding member, Scott Kirkland.

I had the awesome opportunity to talk story with Scott Kirkland last week. With a sense of excitement and thrill for the up-and-coming Crystal Method show at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, we discussed his first musical influences, the early heyday of rave culture and the touring grind of the early 90s. We discussed The Crystal Method’s rise to popularity,

and connected on the level of community that’s typically known to those who love electronic music and its unique culture.

When I spoke with Ken, he was taking a break from the studio where he’s finishing up his newest album, “The Trip Home.”

The release date is later this summer and coincides with the 21st anniversary of The Crystal Method’s first studio album, “Vegas” (Outpost Recordings). “Vegas” is pretty much legendary and was certified platinum in 2007.

I started our conversation by asking Kirkland about the production process.

“I’ve been mixing it with my good friend Glenn Nichols over at Sound City Studios here in The Valley [Los Angeles]. It’s where Nirvana made “Nevermind,” where Smashing Pumpkins made “Siamese Dream,” and where Fleetwood Mac made “Rumours” amongst many historic albums by other groups. The result of all this work is making me feel very jubilant right now!”

Scheduled to play two shows in Hawai‘i – one in Honolulu and one here on Maui – Kirkland continued by expressing anticipation for his upcoming trip. He told me, “You’re in my favorite part of the world. I’ve been going to the islands since I was a kid.

My parents would take me there. I’m super excited to be coming back to Hawai‘i.”

When I asked him what he was most excited to experience on Maui (besides playing at the MACC), he stated, “I’m looking forward to going back to Mama’s Fish House. Enjoying the food, and seeing all the action from the ocean and the

people braving the island, creating such a majestic balance with water sports. It’s a special place and I feel that the two times I’ve had a chance to go there, it really feels like it’s part of Maui. You just can’t miss Mama’s if you want the full experience of being on Maui.”

Scott was born in Southern California and moved with his family to Las Vegas when he was just 1-year-old. He spent the next 19 years living in Sin City. He told me how his family worked in the gaming industry and how different it was in Vegas then, versus now. In the ‘70s, Clark County only had about 150,000 residents. Today, there are over 2 million residents. He still visits family in Las Vegas often, and was just there to shoot the album artwork for his new album, “The Trip Home.” I asked Kirkland about some of his earliest music influences.

“My mom loved Donna Summers, Stevie Wonder and lots of disco. My dad had a pretty decent turntable, and I remember the Marantz receiver with that nostalgic blue glow.

They had parties a lot, and I was sometimes the one playing at Christmas parties and other house parties. I remember getting a thrill out of playing music and having someone in the room react to it, sing along or just tap their foot. That’s a way that I kind of got the bug to share music. My mom listened to lots of disco, she loved the ‘Combat Rock’ album

by The Clash, and my dad loved all kinds of rock, Pink Floyd and some of the more abstract and synthesized stuff. My parents said the first song I ever danced to was ‘Smoke

on the Water’ by Deep Purple. I love music, I love playing music and I always knew that I wanted to play music.”

Kirkland wanted to learn to play the drums like his uncle, but later settled on a different instrument: the guitar.

“I started taking guitar lessons during that sort of heyday of hair metal, Judas Priest and the start of Metallica. I’d go to lots of shows anytime anyone came into town. I took guitar lessons from Mark Slaughter who then went on to start his own band, Slaughter, which had that classic rock anthem sound. He was a really sweet person and when he went off into his musical adventure he gave me a cassette tape and inside he wrote a really lovely paragraph of encouragement. To me, he was someone who was now leaving Vegas and going to tour the world. Being someone who also had that aspiration, he inspired me to keep grinding.”

Kirkland continued by saying, “I was never really a good guitar player, though. I was into heavy metal, and when I first heard Depeche Mode, I was still carving AC/DC on my peachy folder. One day, in the back of my classroom, my friend Jason gave me his Walkman to listen to. “Black Celebration” was playing. I remember thinking ‘holy shit, this is so awesome.’ It had this epic cinematic vibe. It was bigger, dark and had a motive. That’s when I really started to get into the world of Depeche Mode, New Order and many of those other bands. A lot of those bands used the guitar sound, so I again brought out my guitar and began to

from a small upstart label called City of Angels, and they sent in a demo that eventually became their first release. “Now is the Time” came out in 1994, and then “Keep Hope Alive” followed in 1995.

When I went to those first raves in warehouses, just going in and having the sense that you’re doing something slightly secretive and partially illegal was new.

The Crystal Method, Kirkland told me that they began to do shows wherever anyone would book them. “We’d take our gear to the airport, give the guy $20 to check in 600 pounds of cases and fly into a city, set ourselves up, play a show, and then go back to our hotel in whatever promoter’s 2-door hatchback. Then, we’d fly to another city and do it all over again. We knew that the only way we’d grow, and if radio wasn’t going to play your music, is by getting out and playing in front of people. We did that all through 1996. We started making our first album, “Vegas,” and signed to Major record label which was the name of the Outpost label in early 1997. Then, we distributed it through Universal and Geffen.”

The first big show Crystal Method played was with The Chemical Brothers in L.A. in 1996. At that point in time, The Chemical Brothers were actually known as the Dust Brothers. Scott and Ken were huge fans of them, even though they only had a few songs and remixes out at that time.

Scott told me more about that experience.

“That was an exciting time because there was such a vibe for [The Chemical Brothers] and the early West Coast break scene.

There wasn’t any one particular electronic music style; there was techno, house and a

one and beer guzzling that brings in other factors, mosh pits, etc. This was different. It wasn’t always just about the music. When I went to those first raves in warehouses, just going in and having the sense that you’re doing something slightly secretive and par-

tially illegal was new. You’re surrounded by all these people from different backgrounds, different races, different vibes, different ages and everyone just got along. You went in there to dance, and you became a group of like-minded people. Maybe you’d never see those people again until the next party, but in that room, and at that time, it was magic.

It felt like such a cool scene,” said Kirkland.

In addition to being early innovators of a now giant and mainstream electronic music scene, The Crystal Method participated in many groundbreaking and diverse projects that no other electronic music group had ever done: video game music, film soundtracks, commercial advertisements and some of the first fitness-electronic music fusion projects like the Nike Drive shoelace running device. Raver-gamers may also remember a Playstation video game called “N20:Nitrous Oxide.” The entire game soundtrack was created by The Crystal Method, and featured a galaxy-like underworld where a spaceship would fly around collecting little mushrooms and coins with an “E” on them.

Donatella Versace personally reached out to Crystal Method to ask them to perform at Versace’s first runway show after her late brother Gianni was assassinated in 1997. That is when The Crystal Method became one of the first electronic groups to provide the musical vibe for a fashion runway show full of supermodels, A-listers and celebrities.

At the end of our conversation, I asked Kirkland if he had any advice for a new DJ or producer in the electronic music scene.

“Don’t be like everyone else. Find your sound, find your style and embrace it.

Be passionate about everything you do.

Don’t take any shows off, don’t miss any opportunity to make someone smile. Be nice, be kind and be humble, and for God’s sake, have fun.”

play with making music in combination with synths and a little drum machine.”

In fact, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan first met while working at a grocery store in Las Vegas. Scott was in the break room messing with his drum machine when Ken walked up to him. “Ken was like, ‘hey, you make music?’ and told me he was working with a singer. I had written a song with lyrics, and he had a singer. So, I played him the song one day and he liked it and we recorded it. We started working with his singer, and then Ken eventually moved from Vegas to L.A. I followed him out there, and the rest is history.”

When Scott first moved to Los Angeles, things began to change fast. They were exposed to the rising rave scene of the late ‘80searly ‘90s, and experienced a lot of firsts. I asked him about the technology that they were using at that time and what some of his earliest electronic music exposure entailed.

“I had a synthesizer I got for graduation, a drum machine, guitar, amp and a little 4-track player that I would do demos on.

Before I had a sequencer, I started getting into sampling. When we first came to California we had a sampler and Ken had some gear and we combined our stuff. We’d go out to raves in 1989-1990, very early in the scene. Actually Marques Wyatt did this party called MAC’s Garage (Marques, Angel and Chris’ Garage) that we’d frequent, and we also went to a club called Moonshine, what the Moonshine record label derived from. They were basically at warehouses with sound and rave light visuals. People would find their way to raves through a kind of secret map location.”

For the early days of The Crystal Method, going out and discovering new things and realizing that the world and music was changing was extremely influential for Kirkland. He told me that this is what really inspired him and Ken. “At first, we thought that we’d be producers and we liked the idea of working with singers. When we started experiencing the club world, we saw Orbital and were just amazed that it was just two guys up there playing with their synths. We realized that we could do that too, and decided to get in there and start to make our own music.”

The duo responded to a record label advertisement in Herb Magazine. The ad was

couple of other things. We just really loved the organic nature of breakbeats and coming from a world where we were raised listening to a lot of funk, disco and soul, it was a very natural progression. In connection with our rock influences, that brought in our idea of distortion and grit. That punch brought the vibe of being really passionate about something- our music.”

Pretty soon after, The Crystal Method played a show with The Prodigy in Denmark around 1996. “Playing with those bands, and seeing a little bit of the world, that was another new thing,” said Scott. “There weren’t really any festivals in the U.S. in the early days. The grind of touring pushes you more, and makes you enthusiastic, passionate and positive about it. Going outside of the U.S. made us think we’re kind of behind, and maybe one day there’ll be a really thriving scene in the U.S. That thought was encouraging and motivating. We realized that we were onto something and loved it.

We had a lot of fun and got a lot of positive reaction from our tracks.”

I asked Kirkland about his first impression about the rave scene. “I remember feeling really positive about it, and the community.

large floor plan meant that although the place was certainly not empty on the Friday morning I went in, it did not feel crowded. Wood bench seats along the wall had an outlet for every seat, and the house coffee was strong, which was easy to see through the glass mug, and delicious, with woody elements.

“I’ve wanted a coffee shop since I was 15,” said Wentworth. Despite having no prior experience working in a coffee shop, Wentworth took the plunge a few years back after working on her business plan for years. “I’d never worked a day in service since opening Makawao. I went into it 100 percent blind. But it ended up working, I think, because I was approaching it from a client standpoint as opposed to a business. It had a lot of challenges along the way, and I had a lot of great help. It shouldn’t have worked, by all means.”

But it did work, due to a few key elements, among them a community approach, quality products, outsourcing and Wentworth’s work ethic. “I have been massively supported by the community,” said Wentworth. “The reason Sip Me is where it is today – for the reason for a business to catch – it’s all about the community.

More than anything, it really is about the relationships that we built. Not to say that

I think it’s imperative for my team to see that you will scrub the floors, and that you are not afraid to do what you’re asking them to do, and that they know all of the duties that they do. In business, there’s really nothing worse than working for a boss that you don’t respect, can’t trust, or know more than.” She structures her shops with lots of internal structure to build independence and trust – with a general manager, staff managers and stock managers in each shop.

“I’m learning to really trust my instincts. I put a board of advisors together because I am somewhat unexperienced in many ways. I’m abundantly and acutely aware of how many people’s livelihoods are depending on me. From our 22 suppliers to our 37 employees, 13 of which are just employed with me. That’s a responsibility I do not take lightly. I need to make sure I have people on my team that are better than I am in the areas I am lacking.”

n the classic movie Alice in Wonderland, Alice finds a bottle labeled “Drink Me.” She does, and grows massively.

The local coffee shop Sip Me, whose name is inspired by the iconic film, is doing the same. Three years ago, Laura Wentworth, the owner and founder, opened the doors of her flagship location in Makawao at the old Kitada’s space. Then, Sip Me moved on down to Pa‘ia in two shared-space locations: one at Consuelo’s on Baldwin and the other with the boutique Sea La Vie on Hana Highway. In May, doors opened at her Kahului space, and a Wailea location is in the works, to be opened in January of next year.

“I’m kind of insane. There has to be a level of insanity involved in this for sure,” joked Wentworth when I sat down with her at her new space in Kahului, across from First Hawaiian Bank by the harbor.

Sip Me’s newest location is airy and spacious. The space was originally Pioneer Federal, the first bank on Maui, with the original vault still in the kitchen.

The interior is well designed and comfortable, with modern and rustic touches.

The locations all have consistency in quality. It’s the “same exact menu – that being said, the menu is changing,” said Wentworth. In addition to sweet pastries from Chef Lee Anderson and savory pastries from Consuelo, Chef Bev Gannon is coming on board. Gannon’s baker Vossy will soon come on board to make gluten-free products for the shop. Wentworth’s focus is on quality of product and experience. This is apparent from the obvious, like the coffee, down to the small touches. For example, the coffee bar offers maple syrup and does not offer single-use stir sticks. “I think consumers are getting more savvy. We run a really transparent business model,” said Wentworth.

One of Wentworth’s secrets to success is trust in her vision, including her products and her people. She knows her strengths and outsources the rest, building relationships with her vendors, employees and customers.

Sip Me relies on daily deliveries from outside vendors. “We have executive chefs that bake for us every day. Chef Lee Anderson, who owns Sugar Beach – she doesn’t whole-sell to anyone. And every day she bakes for us and does all of our French pastries.”

Wentworth worked with Maui Oma’s David Gridley on her coffee blends. “He is by far the best roaster on Maui – he is so passionate about what he does,” she explains.

“It took me three and a half months and 16 tries to blend [the house coffee]." Wentworth plans on expanding her relationships and bringing in other vendors to sell quality products, such as organic bouquets from Upcountry’s Petaloom Floral Co. The other key ingredient in her growth is simple hard work. The coffee shops are open from 5:30am-7:30pm, and every morning Laura is there with her team to open the doors. “I can’t wait ‘til I can sleep for a day or maybe a week!” Laura laughs.

Laura sits with every employee, who all undergo an intensive training period. “There’s so much behind the scenes. It carries over.”

Eventually, the Kahului space will be an event space with extended hours.

There will be an Alice in Wonderland themed event and an after-hours spot for ArT=Mixx. “We’re going to call it Sip Me After Dark, with rich pastries and BYOB and drink specials,” said Wentworth.

'Upgrade' is undone The mindless violence feels like watching your roommate play ‘Call of Duty’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 100 Min.

ogan Marshall-Green stars in Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade, playing Grey, a quadriplegic who is given the opportunity to walk again. Not only is the protagonist granted mobility, but the microchip implanted in his spine – named STEM – gives him amazing fighting skills. All he has to do is say, “STEM, you know what to do,” and suddenly our hero is Jackie Chan-ning to death the villains who killed his girlfriend and paralyzed him. STEM also talks to him and offers helpful advice and up-to-the-moment facts. It’s kind of like having ALEXA implanted in your head. Instead of asking ALEXA to play Olivia Newton-John’s “Magic,” or what time Komoda’s Bakery opens, you can say “STEM, I need to kill a roomful of people right now.” Suddenly, you’re snapping necks and committing serious Van Damme-age.

That’s the gimmick of this movie and it gets old surprisingly fast.

At first, it seems like Upgrade has something to say about the human tendency to rely too heavily on technology.

By the final stretch, it’s all about the violence. What it comes down to is a revenge fantasy with bodily assistance by a carnage-minded AI. The end result is a big nothing of a summer movie, like Ryan Reynolds’ Self/Less, with sub-Cronenberg body horror and robotic action sequences that seem lifted out of a video game.

Whannell, the character actor who co-created and wrote the Saw and Insidious films, turns in an energetic but completely uninspired turn in the director’s chair. While Upgrade takes place in the

near future, it’s full of Jetsons-like details that look silly and like they’re trying too hard to push a high tech look. Not helping matters is how painfully obvious the big third act reveal is, eliminating any suspense about the story’s outcome.

The best quality to Marshall-Green’s performance is the physicality he brings; conveying how fully STEM takes over his body, Marshall-Green becomes a human marionette and he looks good doing it.

Unfortunately, his charmless performance never makes us care.

The acting is pretty lousy, though the dialog is so bad it’s hard to imagine anyone really making this work. Betty Gabriel, so good as the overly attentive housekeeper in Get Out, gives the best performance here as a cop. She’s too good to waste her time in movies like this.

Not helping things is the cacophonous, ear-splitting music score by Jed Palmer. I’ve seen lots of bad movies that have such great music, I’d almost be fooled into thinking I was watching a great movie. What Palmer accomplishes is “composing” a score so rotten, I would have preferred wall-to-wall music from ABBA (EDITOR’S NOTE: Mama Mia! Here We Go Again opens July 20.You can expect Barry’s review the following week).

What is the point of this? That mean people shouldn’t mess with quadriplegics? Or that quadriplegics shouldn’t seek revenge? Either way, utilizing a character who is paralyzed below the neck as a bloodthirsty action hero struck me as tasteless. Apparently, there is an audience for this and they sat in the aisle across from me. Every time LoganMarshall leapt out of his wheelchair and

slashed yet another villain, I heard a few yelps of “Aw, yeah!” a few seats away. Violence can be exciting but it’s rarely this mindless or unexceptional. The trailers oversell the action, as this takes too long to get where it’s going and will only surprise audience members who have seen five movies in their lifetime.

Considering that the main character can’t move and murders nearby assailants through technological means, it’s hard to get involved with his mission of vengeance. Since STEM is doing all the work for him, watching Grey exact justice is a lot like watching my college roommate play Call of Duty and never give me a turn.

Woefully predictable and visually ugly, Upgrade wants to be RoboCop meets All of Me but plays like another Hardcore Henry, which I don’t mean as a compliment. ■

Once, I would have been mortified to do this in front of anybody, but at some point I let go of my embarrassment, and trusted people not to hate me when I sang off-key. It feels good to just put it all out there, and find out people aren’t as judgmental as you imagine they’ll be. Open up the windows and air out one of your secret habits this week. You might not get acclaim and applause, but people aren’t about to start throwing rocks and rotten vegetables, either.

Because you like everything to be nice and neat and balanced, you have an unconscious tendency to put things (and people) in boxes. Given enough time and enough determination, there will be a steady decline in body fat and increase in muscle tone, but if you look at a daily chart you’ll see lots of spikes and dips. This is normal for any kind of change, including the mental habits you’re trying to put into place. Steady progress is indeed desirable, but don’t be too discouraged or disheartened by tiny setbacks.
