Fireworks Safe, Newspapers Not HYPER LOCAL Publisher Tommy Russo parses the tsunami scare, and the coverage of it, on page 6. I’ll add one, sillyish note: I know the Civil Defense sirens are tested on the 1st of every month (as a colleague pointed out, it’s a great/horrible way to play an April Fools joke on a fresh-off-the-plane friend), but couldn’t they have taken the day off on Monday? I mean, the sirens got a pretty decent workout two days before, and despite small notices in The Maui News and on the County Web site, I’m guessing Maui officials fielded a few jittery phone calls that morning….

LOCAL It’s never good when reporters lose their jobs or when the number of local media outlets shrinks. But, good or not, both of those things will happen once the deal between the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser is consummated.

In case you missed it, Oahu Publications, which owns the Star-Bulletin, announced plans last week to buy the Advertiser from publishing giant Gannet. Unless someone steps forward to buy the Star-Bulletin (which Oahu Publications had to put up for sale because of anti-trust regulations), the two papers will merge and the bloodletting will commence. Of course, if/when Honolulu becomes a one-daily newspaper town it’ll be far from unprecedented—hell, some mid-sized and even big cities are at risk of becoming no-daily newspaper towns. (Again, see Tommy’s piece for a discussion of the way news is changing, and a reference to a new Oahu media company that I’m sure is watching this story with great interest.)… For the last couple months, I’ve been speculating that Gov. Lingle’s efforts to stall the Oahu rail project might be motivated, in part, by the

fact that its main champion, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, could face Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona in the gubernatorial election.

Apparently I was wrong. Discussing her recent trip to Washington, D.C., Lingle said she “looked [Transportation] Secretary [Ray] LaHood in the eye and I told him that I wanted him to understand there are no politics involved from my side of this.” And, as we all know, it’s impossible to look someone in the eye in Washington and lie to them…. Last week, the House of Representatives passed the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act (aka the Akaka Bill) 245-164; it now heads to the Senate, where it’s died repeatedly over the past decade. It may have more momentum now—President Obama has promised to sign it if it lands on his desk. But the bill still has its detractors, including Gov. Lingle.

In a statement issued before the House vote, Lingle had this to say: “For more than seven years, my administration and I have strongly supported recognition for Native Hawaiians and supported the Akaka Bill. We have supported a bill that would set up a process of recognition first, followed by negotiations between the Native Hawaiian governing entity, the State of Hawaii and the United States. Once that was completed, it would be followed by the Native Hawaiian governing entity’s exercise of governmental powers and authorities. Amendments made to the bill in December 2009 turned that process around….Ultimately…the current draft of the bill is not one I can support.” Note the repeated use of the word “recognition.” It’s the same logic that underlies the Apology Resolution—we’ll acknowledge you, we might even say we’re sorry, just don’t expect us to give you any actual power….

The two Democrats vying to fill Neil Abercrombie’s vacated 1st District seat, state

Senate President Colleen Hanabusa and former Rep. Ed Case, appear to have differing views on the special election, which will cost an estimated $1 million.

Hanabusa says we can’t afford it, while Case says it’s necessary to bolster Hawaii’s small Congressional delegation. Ironically, the candidate who probably likes the special election the most is Republican Charles Djou, who’s painting himself as a hard-line fiscal conservative in keeping with his party’s national re-branding. Djou wouldn’t have a prayer in a head-to-head matchup with either Hanabusa or Case in November, but could sneak in if his opponents split the vote.

If you were worried about the government taking away your fireworks, worry no more: SB2365, a bill that would have imposed “a total [statewide] ban on consumer fireworks except for permitted religious or cultural purposes,” has sputtered like a Ground Bloom with a wet fuse. The legislature is still considering creating a task force to study the issue, which is another way of saying we’ll all be choking on sulfur come Independence Day….

Waves of Change This week’s tsunami scare revealed a lot of things, including how much the information landscape has shifted

H

ow did you find out that a potentially destructive tsunami was headed for Hawaii? And, once you found out, where did you turn for updates?

If your answer is any of the traditional sources—TV, radio, even newspaper and government Web sites—chances are you were either getting old information or information that was gleaned from another source: online social media.

This isn’t the first time that a major breaking news story has showcased the power of micro-blogging and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Last year, when widespread protests erupted in Iran and the government there tried to clamp down on the press, Twitter posts broke through and gave the world a raw, real-time window into events as they unfolded. When the ground shook in Haiti, social media again rose to the challenge, spreading news and facilitating an unprecedented fundraising effort.

Fortunately, our recent scare turned out to be a near miss (though the people of Chile were not so lucky, and our thoughts— and donations—are with them). But in the hours between when the sirens first blared and when the warning was officially lifted, it was social media that led the way, offering a vital, inter-linked, constantly refreshed stream of information about what was going on right then.

And, I’m proud to say, MauiTime was on the front lines. After following evacuation protocols and making sure our families and pets were safe, Editor Jacob Shafer (Twitter handle @jacobshafer) and co-owner Jen Russo (@jenrusso) set up shop at MauiTime’s Wailuku office, observing the harbor from above, talking with residents, working the phones, scouring the Internet and firing off updates via Twitter, Facebook and our news blog, mauifeed.com.

Meanwhile, I hopped on my bike, grabbed my Canon Rebel, DSLR, HD flip (which shoots 720p video) and my iPhone with Qik streaming capability and rode down to the water’s edge to stream live video of the expected tsunami.

Some have questioned the wisdom of that decision. I don’t deny I took a risk to get the story, but—in addition to a kayak and a nearby, elevated, concrete-fortified structure—I had a safety net: once again, Twitter to the rescue. I knew that if a major tsunami were going to hit Maui, it would hit Hilo first. And I also knew that, if Hilo were hit, my smart phone would light up with reports about the size, timing, damage, etc.

At that point, I’d hop on my bike, pedal like my life depended on it and make it to high

ground. Again, not to say there were no risks, but I don’t think I was reckless or stupid.

And the decision paid off. During my three hours on the shores of Paukukalo, I snapped photos and shot video, which I

And those photos and videos quickly started popping up all over the place—on blogs, on the local TV news and, eventually, on national outlets like NBC Nightly News and CNN. (It’s worth noting that, while this chain of events shows the power of social media, it also reveals one of its flaws: because my content was disseminated so quickly, few of the outlets that used it cited the source.)

Once it became clear the tsunami wasn’t going to wipe out Maui’s coastal areas, I pedaled back to the office and found that my video streams had already gotten thousands of views. As the eyes of millions turned to Hawaii (and as the Web sites of our daily newspapers crashed), a little independent alternative media company was able to get the story because of tenacity, sure, but even more because of the power of social media.

The point isn’t to toot our own horn (though we’d never pass up an opportunity to do that), but rather to point out how much the media landscape has shifted. Old models have become obsolete, especially when it comes to breaking news, and new tools have stepped in to fill the void. We media types have been engaged in a big pity party for the last few years, churning out self-indulgent eulogies instead of figuring out ways to stay relevant. But

while The Maui News’ Web site was down, their reporters were still pounding the pavement, using, you guessed it, Twitter and Facebook, sharing info across companies for the greater good.

Some people dismiss social media sites as mostly frivolous and narcissistic. But that’s missing the point. These sites are just tools—what matters is what we do with them. After Abercrombie Two familiar Dems and the GOP’s latest great hope vie for the vacated 1st Congressional seat

Name: Charles Djou Party: Republican Current job: Honolulu City Councilmember Political profile: Despite stints in the state House and as Vice Chair of the Hawaii GOP, Djou was a relative unknown outside Oahu until recently. Now, he’s grabbing national headlines as a potential Aloha State version of Scott Brown, the Republican Senator from Massachusetts who was elected in January to replace Ted Kennedy. Everyone from right-wing bloggers to Karl Rove has touted Djou as another chance to throw a wrench in the Dems’ agenda. (A February 1 dispatch from the conservative National Review Online notes that “[a] Republican winning a House race in Hawaii is about as likely as…well, a Republican winning a Senate seat in Massachusetts, and we know how that turned out.”) Djou takes pains to paint himself as an “independent voice” who doesn’t answer to “anyone or any group.” At the same time, he’s clearly trumpeting his small-government credentials—a big red national debt ticker is prominently displayed on his campaign site, and he boasts that he’s “never voted for a tax increase.”

In 2008, the state Sierra Club gave her a pedestrian 57 out of 100 environmental rating (by comparison, her Senate colleague J. Kalani English received a rating of 85). And last year she voted to table same-sex civil union bill HB444, though she supported a new version of the bill this year that was ultimately quashed by the House.

This isn’t Hanabusa’s first go at national office—she ran unsuccessfully (in a special election against Case, coincidentally) for the 2nd District Congressional seat in 2003, and again in 2006 when she lost in the primary to Rep. Mazie Hirono.

Name: Ed Case Party: Democrat Current job: Attorney Political profile: Though he’s been out of public office for almost half a decade, Case— whose cousin is AOL founder and Maui Land & Pineapple majority shareholder Steve Case—has a lengthy political resume. He served eight years in the state House including a run as Majority Leader, and another three years in the U.S. House. In 2006, he challenged Sen. Dan Akaka in the primary and lost, and has been in the private sector since. While in Washington, Case was a member of the centrist “Blue Dog” coalition, which takes conservative positions on various issues, mostly economic. In the ’06 race against Akaka, Case said he would have voted in favor of the 2002 Iraq War Resolution had he been in Congress (Akaka was one of only 23 Senators to oppose it), and in 2005 Case voted to make the PATRIOT Act permanent. But Case has staked out some liberal positions as well. In 1997, he voted against HB117, a bill that opened the door for a Hawaii constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. (The issue surfaced again during Case’s 2004 U.S. House race against rabid same-sex marriage opponent Mike Gabbard.) And as a U.S. Congressman, Case spearheaded HR2376, also known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Marine Refuge Act, which sought to create a large Pacific marine sanctuary (a goal that was later realized when President George W. Bush, in a rare moment of environmental cognizance, issued an executive decree).

Re the February 25 Fashion Issue: I enjoyed the issue, but I have to question your statement that Maui fashion is “all about contrasts.” I’d say Maui fashion is all about flip-flops and big T-shirts and board shorts for the dudes, and the wahine aren’t much better. experience till it becomes a common possession.” That’s a quote from John Dewey, a reformer and philosopher who helped shape many modern educational concepts—things like charter schools and interdisciplinary learning programs.

As early as 1897, he emphasized that the teacher’s traditional concern with delivering knowledge needed to be balanced with a concern for students’ actual experiences and active learning. He’s one of the founding fathers of “hands-on” education.

When substitute teacher and eternal student Amanda Wilson started working in the Maui public school system a few years ago, she immediately began looking for ways to expand beyond the classroom and into the incredible “natural laboratory” that surrounds us.

While an undergrad at the University of Southern California, Amanda immersed herself in studies surrounding childhood and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder). She soon realized that the problem with kids and their attention spans could very well be a symptom of the “sit down and shut up” model, which dates back over 100 years to the Little House on the Prairie-style one-room schoolhouse. For Amanda, this is incongruous with the rest of a modern young person’s life.

“Why are we still doing education the old way, when everything else is advanced?” she asks. “It makes sense that kids are bouncing off the walls when everything else they experience is faster and uses more technology.”

She set out to explore new pedagogies (models of learning), and in 2009 partnered with her tech-savvy step-sister and close friend Jill Pridemore to create Jungle to Jungle, a nonprofit, student-driven, “projectbased” learning initiative that uses travel and technology to encourage kids on Maui to see the world through the eyes of an explorer.

BORNEO BOUND The project sends Amanda and Jill to a different exotic locale each year, where they act essentially as “avatars” for Maui students.

In fall 2009, the duo made their Amazon trek, stopping to meet exotic animals, plants and cultures along the way. As students at Kalama

Coordinating with science teachers on Maui, Jill and Amanda create custom curricula that can be integrated into existing classes. The emphasis is on learning outside of the box, allowing students to choose what they want to investigate and providing experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom environment. Amanda and Jill say they work closely with students and instructors before and after the travel period, to ensure a seamless integration of what is being learned and explored.

After a successful first year working with teacher Maggie Prevenas and the Kalama Intermediate science club, the Jungle to Jungle project recently announced a new partnership with the South Maui Learning Ohana and Kihei Charter School’s Middle School Academy, meaning 150 new students will participate in the 2010 program. Kihei Charter in particular is already focused on

education on Maui,” says Jill. “South Maui Learning Ohana and Kihei Charter School have really impressed us with their openness to new ideas and methods.”

For the 2010 program, Amanda and Jill have set their sights on the island of Borneo, which contains one of the oldest jungles on the planet. Located smack-dab in the center of Southeast Asia, Borneo is home to three different countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Together with the students of Kihei Charter, they’ll be on the trails of strange and amazing creatures like the rare clouded leopard, the giant (and endangered) orangutan, the pygmy elephant and the enigmatic Borneo rhino.

“Scientists are still finding new species there to this day, so we never know what we’ll find,” says Amanda in her usual infectiously excited tone.

“We teach sustainability through awareness,” says Jill. “It is our hope that by meeting the species that live in the jungles around the world, and seeing how they compare and contrast to the ones in our backyards, participants in our project will grow to love and value them a whole lot more. Then, perhaps, they will care about making sure they don’t go away forever.”

Using technology, they can see, feel and study what is going on thousands of miles away.

Even more important than science, students need to learn to work in a community, in a realm that mimics the modern social world and the future they will meet when they graduate. Our experiences are not limited to a particular building, geographical location or one group of people; technology allows us to intermingle freely across borders. Programs like Jungle to Jungle offer students a chance to learn in a realm that is more real and dynamic than a one-room schoolhouse could ever be.

Since the Kahului store opened late last month, the parking lot has been consistently packed, as have the aisles inside— with a combination of actual shoppers and people who seem to be simply wandering, gazing in wonder as though they’d stumbled into a museum or modern art installation.

Yet despite its popularity, there are two prevailing claims about the store: first, it’s a big Mainland chain; and second, it’s expensive.

To the first point, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Whole Foods is a major corporation with hundreds of locations in three countries and headquarters in Texas.

Though they carry local products (for a complete list see MauiTime’s food blog, mauidish.com), most of the money you spend there won’t stay on-island.

The second point is murkier. Whole Foods definitely has a reputation for being expensive, evidenced by the nickname “Whole Paycheck.” But just how pricy is it?

The other night, with the fridge getting bare and the family battling head colds and in no mood for a restaurant, I decided to find out. How much would it cost to feed my family with the natural, quality grinds Whole Foods has built its reputation on?

Wanting something that would require little or no preparation, I headed for the hot food and salad bars. What I found was a pleasing array of options. The salad bar features all the stuff you’d imagine and a few things you wouldn’t (beans, fish, grains, hearts of palm and hard-boiled eggs sit alongside the usual croutons and cheese). The hot food bar

changes regularly—when I went it was heavy on Indian food—but always features staple items like rice, macaroni and mashed potatoes.

Normally, food from both bars is $7.99 per pound. (That means everything—there’s no sliding price structure depending on what you get.) But on Wednesdays, that price is knocked down to $5.99 per pound. I asked if that was an introductory deal to get people in the store, but was assured the Wednesday discount will stick around.

The bars are flanked with an array of prepared and made-to-order options. The made-to-order grub—sandwiches, pizza, burritos, Chinese and Korean food—is more expensive; not astronomically so (a burrito, for example, is about $6), but I was looking for a better deal.

I found it in a whole roasted chicken— free-range, nitrate- and antibiotic-free—for $8.99. Add two pounds of sides at $7.99 (or $5.99 on Wednesday) and you’ve got a family-sized meal for a decent price.

The kicker, though, was when I got home and actually dug in: the chicken was delicious, moist and well-seasoned; the salad ingredients all tasted fresh and crispy (about half of what’s featured at the salad bar is locally grown, and Whole Foods is good about clearly labeling stuff so you know), and the Indian dishes I selected—chicken vindaloo (a mild, ginger-based curry) and saffron rice with carrots—tasted like they could have come straight from a fragrant ethnic kitchen. In all honesty, it was one of the best dinners I’ve had in a while, and it fed my family, with leftovers, for under $30.

Whole Foods isn’t what anyone would call cheap, and some of their specialty items are indeed expensive. But they also have a lot of stuff in that happy median price-range, and the bonus is you know you’re getting truly good food, free of the artificial ingredients that permeate so much of what we eat.

I imagine Whole Foods will supplant, not replace, the other places I shop and dine. I’m still committed to buying local whenever possible. magine how pop would sound if it met a time traveler and a linguist, and later, all three of them decided to go out for drinks. Do that, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what it’s like to listen to Pink Martini’s Splendor in the Grass. This is music that’s globally, historically and emotionally diverse. One moment you’re a signorina, shyly declaring your love in an Italian cafe, and the next you’re an unshaven hombre in Spain, laying in the gutter, clutching an empty bottle of red wine, trying to light your cigarillo. Whatever mood you’re in—happy, lovestruck, hopeful, cynical, sad, annoyed—Pink Martini’s got something you could toast to.

If you’ve never had the joy of being intoxicated by Pink Martini, they’re a band out of Portland, Oregon, with a larger than average membership. That’d be a dozen musicians, not including artistic director Thomas Lauderdale. Pink Martini has toured throughout the world, and performed at the Hollywood Bowl.

They often collaborate with other artists; if you’re an NPR geek (like me), you’ll be delighted to hear that Ari Shapiro was among these esteemed guests.

Recently, I chatted with Pink Martini’s resident diva vocalist extraordinaire, China Forbes. Forbes’s voice is dynamic, mixing girlish innocence with devilish sensuality. Of course, I had to ask her about working with Shapiro. “It was fantastic! He’s a total sweetheart,” she exclaimed. “He sings such an obnoxious song [But Now I’m Back], but since it’s

While Forbes performs in a plethora of languages (Arabic, Japanese, Portuguese and Turkish, to name a few), she is fluent only in English, French and Italian. “I’d be working for the UN if I could speak all those languages,” she laughed. Forbes’s immense talent as a vocalist is exemplified by the fact that the emotion of her songs is always apparent, even when the literal meaning may not be. She explained that in order to sing in a language she isn’t familiar with, she practices for hours and works with a native speaker. “Just the repetition and practicing over and over helps,” she said.

Forbes regards music as poetry and always considers the visceral impact. “I really think about what every word means, and I try to learn phrases in that language,” she said. “I try to know the heart of the song. I keep that in the back of my mind when I’m performing.”

While Pink Martini covers several eras of musical stylings, Forbes told me her favorite is definitely the ‘70’s. (Fun fact: Her interest in music blossomed when she became “obsessed” with Donna Summer’s “Live and More” album.) When asked if she would like to live in that era, she replied: “I did! It was great! Not Another Zombie Movie Yes, actually. And, while it’s loaded with clichés, it might also make you stockpile for the apocalypse The Crazies

A friend told me recently that his neighbors were living “off the grid” and that they owned a shotgun and lots of survival gear and supplies, just in case “smart bombs” took out electricity nationwide and life became every man and woman for themselves. At first I shrugged him off—until thoughts of a world free of electricity, no more fuel, not enough food and everyone running around with sawed-off shotguns began to somersault in my mind. The Crazies thrives off this type of “the world is over” paranoia, the kind that’s easy to dismiss as conspiracy theory nonsense, until you stop and realize that it’s not so farfetched after all.

This remake of an early, little-known George A. Romero horror film stars Timothy Olyphant as a resourceful sheriff who goes on the run with his pregnant wife (Radha Mitchell) when nearly every citizen of

his small town becomes a violence-prone zombie (and really, is there another kind?).

An unseen force watches as a quiet, Norman Rockwellian way of life devolves into an unending loop of destruction and murder.

There’s a lot that works, beginning with the believable performances (Olyphant’s clenched-teeth intensity suits the role), a few potent scares, a knockout of a closing scene and how, even at its most far-out,

the scenario has an internal logic that feels chillingly plausible.

What doesn’t work are the recycled horror movie clichés—and the fact that the filmmakers think they can get away with recycling them. Evildoers creeping up on characters with seemingly no peripheral vision? Check. Music blaring a “shriek chord” whenever a cheap jump is needed?

Yup. Protagonists constantly splitting up

for no reason, and making idiotic decisions (like “hiding out” in front of a large window)? Why, of course. I can forgive this for being yet another zombie pre/ post-apocalyptic thriller, but the old-hat gimmicks stand out all the more because of recent films—Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland—that have poked fun at them.

Romero produced this version, which I liked better than the recent remakes of his Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead; the latter original in particular remains the unbeatable masterpiece of zombie cinema. Horror fans, of course, will eat The Crazies up, brains and all.

Despite its flaws, the film’s uncomfortably timely depiction of a world where no one can be trusted is haunting. I’m an optimistic realist who believes in the inherent good of mankind, but, as I walked out of the theater, I found myself wondering how much survival gear goes for at Sears. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film34

The tale of the Hawaiian people and their sometimes courageous, sometimes questionable battle with Hansenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease is one that lives on in the present day. Though the disease no longer threatens lives, Kalaupapa, Molokai remains frozen in time, a prison faded into a sanctuary for those who struggled with the illness.

Father Damien, who lived in Kalaupapa with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;lepersâ&#x20AC;? and helped them find spiritual peace, was recently honored with sainthood. Koâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;olau: A True Story of Kauaâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;i tells the tale of one family whose lives were upended by the disease in the 1890s.

To depict the story of Koâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;olau, a Waimea native, and his family, the performers will use live music, animated projections, shadow puppets and Japanese kuruma ningyo (wheeled puppets). The original story was written by Piâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ilani, the wife of Koâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;olau, in the Hawaiian language, with the help of an American journalist, John Sheldon. After a trip to New York to perform at the LaMaMa Experimental Theater, the production members, led by director Tom Lee, return to Maui. 242-7469 or mauiarts.org. [SB]

The Vandals, along with opening bands Highly Unlikely and The Skunkdogs, are descending on the West side. (Personally, I think The Vandals should have incorporated their last names into their band name: Quackenbush, Fitzgerald, Escalante and Freese. Really?) Edgy is the buzz word of the nightâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;after all, The Vandals sing the song â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Girlfriendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Deadâ&#x20AC;? with goofy smiling and jumpy antics, suggesting, â&#x20AC;&#x153;jump off a building and join her in hell.â&#x20AC;? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to say, this is a much heartier break-up song than the whiny fare bands usually indulge in. Though the members of The Vandals might have been jiltedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;hey, who hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t?â&#x20AC;&#x201D;they have plenty of other talents to fill up their days and nights, including hosting a radio morning show on Barely Legal Radio, performing for U.S. troops in Afghanistan and selling booze. Another note: Josh Freese, of Nine Inch Nails and Gwen Stefani fame, will be banging the skins.

The story captures both a fundamental struggle for personal freedom and the triumph of unconditional love in the most difficult circumstances. Tom Lee addresses these powerful themes with puppetry that evokes the poetry of the Hawaiian language and the natural environment of the islands. Recommended for ages 13 and older. However, don’t flip out. Sure, you’re probably not crazy about these uninvited alterations, but this is a good opportunity for you to put yourself in others’ shoes. The last time you did something big, who handled it best (and who did the worst)?
