LYON, LA CONFLUENCE. COMPLETION OF A BLOCK BETWEEN URBAN MORPHOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT Master’s degree thesis - 02/2018

The central theme of this thesis is the project of completion of a block in the Sainte-Blandine district, in Lyon, within the area of the Confluence, recently affected by an extensive urban regeneration program, still underway. The goal is to prepare a project that is in harmony with the criteria of environmental, energy and social sustainability of the masterplan Lyon Confluence, respecting the rules established by local legislation. The work carried out consists of two parts. In the first part, after an overview of the objectives set by the local planning instruments for the city‘s sustainable

development project, we analyzed the transformations and strategies identified by the ZAC (Zone d’Aménagement Concerté) for the redesign of the urban fabric of the city. To better understand the design approach of the ZAC instrument, we have analyzed other case studies, in the Parisian context, showing similarities and differences with the Lyon context. After that, our attention focused on the residential area of Sainte-Blandine, highlighting the main characteristics and the identity elements of its consolidated urban fabric. The second part concerns the project, at the urban block and architectural scale, of an inter-generational residence for elderly people and students. After analyzing the structure and the urban features of the block, we moved on to the design of the building, applying the prescriptions and planning constraints envisaged by the PLU (Plan Local d’Urbanisme). In this work we used an approach through environmental planning, strategies and the main strengths of the intervention. The various inspections carried out on the territory have allowed us to find the information and documentation necessary to be able to better realize this type of project.

AL NADA DISTRICT, GAZA STRIP. DESIGN WITHIN THE LIMITS OF SCARCITY Design Atelier - 2017

The central objective of the atelier is the reconstruction of a bombed area located in the Gaza Strip. The strong point of the masterplan is the creation of a covered path that links the new services and poles of attraction and has the function of urban and social mending. The building are located taking in consideration the direction of summer winds, the solar exposure and besides the perception of citizen principles. The raw earth bricks allow the self-construction of the buildings that, starting from a basic module, can be expanded both horizontally and vertically.

MUSEUM OF OLD JOBS + RESTAURANT

The starting building is the Mulino Colombatto, one of the many water mills of Barge. The project foresees that the building hosts a museum dedicated to the crafts that were once practiced in this territory, in order to rediscover the historical memory of the place. The redevelopment also aims to create a restaurant, in order to make the visit to the museum more pleasant and giving visitors the opportunity to taste typical dishes of the Piedmontese cuisine.

LYON, LA CONFLUENCE URBAN DESIGN Design Atelier - 2016

The atelier consists in the realization of a masterplan for the Confluence area, in the city of Lyon. The first phase concerns the analysis of the territory from an urbanistic and sociological point of view, this in order to realise a project that is compatible with the urban context and that responds to the different needs of the citizens. The general goal is to make the area attractive, livable and sustainable. Besides the masterplan has five key objectives: the creation of a green lung from north to south, the social and functional mixitĂŠ, the urban security, the urban identity and the sustainable mobility.

TURIN, THE AREA BETWEEN PORTA NUOVA AND CORSO DANTE THE ARCHITECTURAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Design Atelier - 2016

The main objective of the master plan is to redevelop a large area south of the center of Turin through the construction of a linear urban park, that has the function of green lung in a strongly urbanized context. Passing from the territorial to the architectural scale, the project involves the construction of residential and commercial buildings, which fit harmoniously into the urban context. The strengths of the project are sustainable usability (common spaces, accessibility, absence of architectural barriers), the indoor wellness, and the “intelligent green”(garden roofs, green walls, decorative gardens).

TURIN, MADAMA CRISTINA SQUARE “BUILDING IN THE BUILT” Design Atelier - 2015

The object of the atelier is the superelevation project of a building in Madama Cristina Square, in the lively district of San Salvario, in Turin. At a very early stage, physical and climatic analyzes of the urban context are carried out, which provide the project guidelines. Then, we move to the architectural scale. Specifically, the superelevation gives rise to a residential building that acts as a “hinge” between the two buildings on the sides, because it allows the unification of the fronts and and takes up the features of the architectural language, respecting the context.
