Really - it doesnt HAVE to be a problem!!
Indeed, les femmes obviously deserve Christmas gifts for so many reasons (whether they are mums, grandmums or aunts).
WE all want to give a unique gift at Christmas Whatever her age or status, the lady of the time - one which will be remembered (for the house should be appreciated, and this is right reasons) all-year-round. Yet, when it comes to the crunch, most of us also have a tendency to blank out completely, forgetting what our recipients really want - or don’t have! Thus begins the annual, panic-stricken cycle of purchasing random scarves, candles and body-lotions (which we know will only end up being re-gifted [to use a word beloved of our transatlantic cousins]). As they constitute just over half of the world’s population, it’s always well to bear in mind what members of the female sex require as a Yuletide present.
possibly only with love and care, as well as marking the importance of this annual festivity.

Accordingly, make Sunday, December 25th, 2016, truly memorable by presenting her with a most unique and cherishable present.
One idea is to help her rid herself of everyday stress-and-strain, via a relaxing massage or a refreshing beauty-treatment.
This may not be expensive, but it should mirror genuine love and affection which makes the gift invaluable.
Gift certificate vouchers canbe purchased from numerous places, such as shopping malls, beauty and hair salons, and restaurants.
Interests and hobbies should be given premier priority when shopping for the perfect gift-items. Make her feel youthful again by presenting presents which really do reflect her interest.
Other gift-ideas include, for example, jewellery and accessories, or, alternatively, why not focus on personal interests, such as photography, sketching and homefurnishing. A bottle of perfume or a sleek handbag also makes a good present; however, ensure that the fragrance is not too strong, and that the bag is both classy and practical.

PETS FOR LIFE Have a Merry Christmas, and remember - A Dog is for Life!! IN July, the City Dogs’ Home, in Stoke-on-Trent, marked another milestone, when it celebrated its 26th anniversary. However, its staff will soon be too busy to celebrate, as many people will ignore its annual plea that a ‘A Dog is for Life, not just for Christmas’! In the meantime, as this year’s festive season beckons, this remarkable, local animal welfare organisation will, once again, be making its annual appeal, ‘Give a Dog a Christmas Dinner’. Each and every year, the City Dogs’ Home is inundated during the so-called ‘Season of Good Will’ and the immediate New Year period, with myriad canines discarded, following ‘impulse buys’ of ‘cute’ puppies as pets. The CDH is passionate about caring for local dogs which (for whatever reason) have been given up, abandoned, lost, are stray, and there is nobody left
to care for them. Thousands of them through its kennels during the 30 years it has been providing a rescue-service, and the Home has rescued and re-homed many hundreds of dogs during the interim period. As a result, the Home (which cares for dogs around the clock every day) really does need readers’ help. Many of the canines sent to the CDH are often abused, abandoned or in poor condition, and usually require medical attention. This Christmas time, the Home is asking for the simple things in a dog’s life, such as blankets, food, and bedding, to keep the dogs warm during the winter months. If you could spare a dog-blanket, tins of food, dried food, bedding, or anything else that can make a difference to the care which the Home provides, and allow the dogs to be warm and wellfed this year, its staff would be most grateful.
Please bring your item or items to Signal Reception, or drop it or them at City Dogs’ Home, 192, Brookhouse Lane, Bucknall, Stokeon-Trent ST2 8ND, Tel: 01782 304130.

Are YOU ready to make the requisite commitment?! THE festive season is - traditionally - a time of the year when people add four-legged friends to their families. Children aren’t at school, and adults are ‘on ‘leave’ from work, making it ultra-convenient to adopt a pet; however, we urge readers to think about those pets beyond the Christmas/New Year holiday-period! Many people decide to purchase (or ‘adopt’) a pet at Christmastime, but they should be encouraged to think beyond Yuletide as to what ‘lifestyle commitments’ may be on the horizon for the entire family (or relationship). To put it baldly, canine chums pose AT LEAST a ten-year commitment, and feline friends a minimum one of twelve years, both facts involving a cost to owners of hundreds (and hundreds) of pounds EACH YEAR - and that’s a reality, even if no major veterinary issues occur! Indeed, readers are advised to consider veterinary-costs, along with the daily duty of
training PETS FOR LIFE and exercising pets, andboarding-fees, when you go on vacation. It is an acknowledged fact that animal welfare charities and sanctuaries are hit with a ‘peak’ receipt of abandoned pets during and/or around the month of May, with many of these admissions the result of people who have failed to think through properly their decision to purchase a kitten or puppy at Christmastime. Just five months after the festive season, cute kittens and puppies are delinquent ‘teenagers’, requiring obedience-training, socialisation, exercise and, yes, care. Needless to say, this all becomes ‘too much’ for some individuals and families who haven’t given sufficient consideration to their initial decision. Dogs and cats can live for 18 years, during which time people can split up, change their jobs, and move home. New pet-owners should be certain that they can include their pets within the 01782 751 279 firstname.lastname@example.org scope of their intended activities and lifestyle• Luxury, purpose built cattery changes. • Fully licensed and insured • Bespoke care BE SURE THAT YOU • Inspections welcome • Special diets are catered for ARE READY TO MAKE • Competitive prices THE NECESSARY • Short and long stays OBLIGATION? Hashemite King Faisal I of the newly-created country of Iraq, for many years, acting as his personal advisor in oil-matters. (On November 11th, 1920, Iraq became a League of Nations mandate under British control, with the name, ‘State of Iraq’, while Faisal became its Britishbacked ruler, after he had been expelled from neighbouring Syria by the French, when they occupied that country). John Cadman’s extensive consultations in Iran throughout the 1920s culminated in his leading a British delegation to Tehran on April 3rd, 1933; the final agreement, which resulted mainly from his negotiating skills, was signed on April 29th, 1933. It stipulated that the British concessions be extended for 60 years to 1993; that a minimum annual royalty of £750,000 sterling be paid to Iran, and that the area of the concession be limited to 100,000 square miles. Ratified on May 28th, 1933, the concession was eventually revoked on May 1st, 1951, with retalitatory actions taken by the British and American governments eventually leading to the overthrow of the Shah and the Islamic Revolution of 1979. During the 1930s, Cadman - who was renowned for his love of shellfish- made a name for himself, thanks to a series of radio-talks on the oilindustry on the BBC. In 1937 (as part of King George VI’s Coronation Honours List), he was elevated to the House of Lords, receiving an hereditary peerage, becoming Baron Cadman of Silverdale “in the County of Stafford”, and, the following year, he was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1940, and died at his country home, Shenley Park, Bletchley, in Buckinghamshire, aged just 63, on May 31st, 1941.
A FAMOUS POTTERS memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey, in London, but his actual funeral service took place in his home village of Silverdale at St. Luke’s Church, where his ashes were interred in the family grave in the churchyard. If you visit St. Luke’s Church, you can see a stained-glass window (unveiled during a ceremony on November 18th, 2012), which was designed by artist, Graham Chaplin, whose mission-statement was: “Looking at the diverse life of Lord Cadman and his very real contribution to both the country and to Silverdale, I sought for a way to bring this to life in a meaningful way.” The design is loosely based upon the visual impact of oil, when seen on water, with a rainbow-like effect, using bubbles in which to include illustrations of various aspects of his life, including his school, the house where he was born and his involvement in all aspects of mining and petroleum technology. Although John Cadman was instrumental in making BP into the multi-billionpound corporate organisation that it is today, the company felt that it could not contribute towards the cost of the stained-glass window! THE REGENT THEATRE “A MONUMENTAL SHOW” - DIRECT FROM ITS WEST END TRIUMPH!! LAUDED as ‘the theatrical event of the year’, Bill Kenwright’s production of ‘Evita’ is returning to Hanley’s Regent Theatre in the New Year! The international, award-winning musical starring Wet, Wet, Wet singer, Marti Pellow, as its laconic narrator, ‘Che’ Guevarra, and Portuguese actress, Madelana Alberto, as the eponyomous heroine - last toured the country three years ago. Now, Kenwright’s version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed show can be enjoyed, once again, at the Piccadilly venue, following its smash-hit run at London’s Dominion Theatre in the West End. This much-loved musical tells the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Colonel Juan Peron, tracing the story of her journey from working-class origins to her accruing of extraordinary wealth and power, with many people viewing her as the spiritual leader of their nation. In death, she achieved genuinely-iconic status, something which continues into the 21st century. With more than twenty, major awards to
its credit (including the Oscar-winning film version, starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce and Jimmy Niall), this show promises to be as popular as ever. It features such musical theatre classics as ‘Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina’, ‘On This Night of a Thousand Stars’, ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’ and ‘ the Academy Awardwinning ‘You Must Love Me’. Directed by Bob Thomson and Bill Kenwright, this production is designed by Matthew Wright, and choreographed by Bill Dreamer. “A classic is reborn. All of the ‘Evitas’ I have seen over the years seem like dress rehearsals for this one. It has reached its apogee. Stunning,” enthused The Sunday Daily Telegraph. Meanwhile, What’s On Stage opined: “Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s partnership is the stuff of the legend”, and The Times thundered: “Shout it loud. ‘Evita’ is back with a bang!” ‘Evita’ runs from Tuesday, January 31st, to Saturday, February 4th, at 7.30pm, with 2.30pm matinee performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tickets (priced from £15 [£17.90 online/’phone]) are available from The Regent Theatre Box Office on 0844 871 7649, or by visiting www.atgtickets.com/ stoke Pictures show the previous West End cast.
THE BEST NIGHT-OUT THIS CHRISTMAS - GUARANTEED!! THE one-and-only Eric has returned to Newcastle’s New Vic Theatre for his annual, festive ‘jolly’! You can join him and his multi-talented band of actors and musicians for a non-stop night of comedy, inspired mayhem and some of the greatest music of the 1960s. Just by way of a change, Eric needs money; so, he’s organising a Christmas party at the local community centre, with him as DJ and host. Money from the ticket-sales, and a good chance of copping-off for Christmas. What could go wrong?! Well, the five people who have bought tickets are all a little ‘odd’ - Dorothy, Evelyn Toto (a friend of Dorothy’s), the very timid Miss Lyons, the heartless Terry Inman (T. Inman - got it yet?) and the rather dim Steve Crowe make it the weirdest Christmas party you will ever attend!
- until THE NEW VIC THEATRE Saturday, December 10th, at 7.30pm. Tickets (priced at £18.50 [Monday & Tuesday] and £19.50, £22 and £23.50 [WednesdaySaturday]) are available from the New Vic’s Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www. newvictheatre.org.uk Tickets cost just £16 for groups of four or more, and, for groups of ten, you also get a FREE bottle of champagne (and a FREE, eleventh ticket for the organiser).
“THE PERFECT ANTIDOTE TO THE CORPORATE CHRISTMAS” IN its now-traditional appearance at Newcastle’s New Vic Theatre, The Albion Band offers a genuinely special Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 14th.
But, they still manage to provide a laugh-aminute - and perform 20 of the greatest hits of the ‘60s.
Four, great musicians feature in a guided tour through the Yuletide customs of Britain, via readings, folk carols and music.
These shows have become a North Staffordshire tradition, attracting record-breaking audiences.
The evening comprises the combined talents of Simon Nicol (Fairport Convention), Kellie While (Albion Band), Simon Care (Edward II) and the Guv’nor himself, Ashley Hutchings, founder of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion Band.
“When I first brought Eric here, he was on tour, but, since then, Newcastle has become somewhere really special for him, with a new script written each time he comes back, especially for the New Vic,” explained actor, musician, scriptwriter, director and producer, David Graham, the ‘mastermind’ behind the ‘Uncle Eric’ phenomenon. You can enjoy this new show from David Graham Productions - ‘Eric’s Christmas Party’
Lauded by The Guardian as “the perfect antidote to the Corporate Christmas”, the show starts at 7.30pm, and tickets (priced at £17, £19.50 and £21, with concessions and Under-16s Go Free) are available from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www. newvictheatre.org.uk

Tidy tips for clearing those pesky, Autumnal leaves! RAKING those dreaded, Autumnal leaves doesn’t have to be dreary chore. You can make quick work of clearing leaves from your garden lawn, driveway and pathway with a good leafblower, which will save you hours of hard work, using a hand-rake or brush! A blower makes it easy to tidy up fallen leaves into piles ready for collection, or use a vacuum to suck them up and, then, shred for compost. The ‘trick’ is to find a leaf-blower which doubles up as a vacuum, enabling you to ride yourself of leaves without recourse to a veritable artillery of expensive tools. Modern leaf-blowers can offer a shredding function, which will cut down those leaves to up to 70% of their original size, meaning that you don’t have to empty the collection-bag so often, and can clear your paths, drives and lawns in one ‘fell-swoop’. Electric leaf-blowers are often cheaper, and are perfect, if you have a smaller lawn or driveway, and you’re able to plug into a power-source; however, go for petrol-
powered HOME IMPROVEMENTS ones, if you are faced with hard-to-reach areas, such as those under ledges or larger lawns. A wheeled vacuum and shredder moves likes a lawnmower and, traditionally, features a large collection-bag, making it ideal for wet leaves or on slightly-windy or unpredictable days when you fear your neat pile may start straying - it’s also perfect for those who can’t lift a hand-held version for long periods. Be sure to recycle your fallen leaves, as they are an excellent, natural compost for your flower-beds and borders (especially if they’ve been picked up wet, and can, therefore, make a nice mulch in your compostpile). If you’ve accumulated dry-leaves along the way, get ‘crafty’ by spending a chilly Autumn afternoon, making some crafts by converting different-coloured and shaped leaves into animals or trees on paper. Alternatively, why not make an Autumnal wreath for your door or garden-fence with dried leaves, berries, twigs and pine-cones for a homely, rustic ‘look’?

The result is a drink which is both soothing and invigorating, helping you to find your ideal balance picking you up when you are down, and relaxing when stressed. your require their services. You may wish to contact a funeral director, because of concerns about your funeral arrangements or those of someone who is ill. Readers may need advice, if someone close to you has passed away unexpectedly and you are unsure of what happens next; alternatively, you may simply want an estimate of funeral-costs. It is a common misconception that you can only contact a funeral director, once you have a registered a death. However, this is most emphatically not the case, and such an interval can lead to a funeral being delayed unnecessarily. The sooner funeral directors become involved, the sooner they will be able to discuss your requirements and act on your behalf, to ascertain when the documents allowing the funeral to proceed will be issued. No one ever wants to organise a funeral, but, when the inevitable happens, it is reassuring to know that a funeral directing firm will guide you through the process and help you to make arrangements at what can be a very upsetting time.
Providing a duty of care to the bereaved THE very concept of ‘Coping with Bereavement’ is, by the nature of things, something which each, individual person has to come to terms with in his or her own fashion. Nowadays, in the 21st century, it is something which - compared to people living in the Victorian period and throughout the 20th century, who experienced a closer relationship with Death - the overwhelming majority of us are completely unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, it is part of our duty to our family and friends (as well as the memory of the deceased) to find the resolve to meet practical and emotional demands which it makes upon us. Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner, relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of a reputable, well-established firm of funeral directors.
FUNERAL SERVICES North Staffordshire -based company, Dolven Funeral Services Ltd., possesses all the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, its team (which has more than 15 years’ experience within the funeral industry) provides optimum advice at your time of personal grief. Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereaved as is humanly possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required. Specialising in every aspect of funeral care, Dolven listens carefully to its clients, in order to ensure that your exact requirements are answered with integrity. The company arranges the funeral, taking care of related, practical matter; importantly, Dolven’s services often extend way beyond the day of the funeral.
