PORTFOLIO - general informations

I am Mattia Milano and extend an invitation to invite you to peruse through my academic architectural portfolio. I am an Architect and have completed a Bachelor degree of Arts in Architecture from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of South, Switzerland. In this portfolio I detail an array of projects, which I have selected to show from my three years of study and in addition to this are derived from experience as an intern. The selection represents my creativity, technical skills and passions as an Architecture student. With this selection I hope to show whom I am as an Architect. My ambition is to create and improve upon our present time and consequentially improve living for future generations. In my opinion, Architecture can solve problems and create new solutions, hence this is why I believe it is important to understand the wishes and preferences from people in terms of architecture, and then take this but surprise them with something more, perhaps something they weren’t expecting.

ANALYSIS: The analysis of the project came from a great study of the territory including the whole district of Via Trevano, analysing the main services for prospective tenants that are located within the selected area with a coverage from our area to the old town. PROJECT: The intention of the project is to complete the existing area, composed with important architectural element and located in a strategic point into the city of Lugano. The goal is to construct a green and eco-friendly neighborhood. The building consists of two volumes formed by two different types: a walkway outside and a central corridor, separated by the vertical circulation. At the ground floor there are public activities, a strong point for the sustainability of the program. CONTRUCTION: The construction of the building is divided in two parts. The first part is the structure and is constituted by load-bearing walls and concrete pillars, the second part is formed by rear-end collisions. The facade consists of a raster given by the fiber-cement panels, chosen for their durability so as to also have a lower cost of maintenance over time. These elements give a rhythm to the facade, regulate it, and create the opportunity to be able to open more freely. What happens in the back blocks is almost superfluous. Having the two separate blocks ensures a well-defined thermal wrap and in turn is easier to manage. SUSTAINABILITY: The typology of the building allows a clear distribution of the technical installation. A photovoltaic system is positioned on the roof, these panels have the task of making the building with free energy impact. The design falls within the MIN-P canons, meets the requirements of natural lighting required by MIN-Eco and alsoaligns with the gray energy calculation.

The location has a green area such as forest and public vegetable gardens that give a sense of freedom and nature to the surrounding space, helping to promote quality of life for the people. The proposal considers a typology of seep through apartments that allow a relationship between the forest and the historic buildings in the lot. The report is clearly visible in the living room through the large windows of the apartments and on the ground floor that is completely open and it is scanned by pilotis that underlines the structure. All apartments provide a great flexibility that allows the residents to add more rooms if need be. The accessibility of the apartments is guaranteed by a walkway located outside. The private walkways that connect with this, become private terraces, whereby the owners can meet other tenants. In the roof floor there are the common areas for socializing among the resident, which can be distinguished as a strong point for the intergenerational aspiration.

3 | Fisherman House - Academic project PROJECT INFO_ - Location: Piora, Canton Ticino, Switzerland - Project type: Academic project - Individual/Grup work: Individual - Level of the project: 5th semester project - Carried out: 18 January 2016 - Supervisor: Arch. Massimo Cattaneo, massimo.cattaneo@supsi.ch

The project is located in the south of the Swiss mountains, a pristine place where you can relax with a day of fishing. On the shore of Lake sorgle the “FISHERMAN HOUSE�, a mountain hut on a human scale. The main topics are: The relationship with the environment: an essential feature in a place like this. For this reason it was decided to use concrete for the foundation and wood. The CA draws an impressive dam which is located nearby and the beach is the main essence of the forests in these mountains. The relationship with the environment we find with the walkway that connects to the forest floor rooms of the shelter, entering inside and flowing on the ground floor to connect to the main path. The second is the prefabrication, a choice linked to problems of location. In fact, this area is accessible by the means only for 6 months, is therefore a need to facilitate the construction and reduce the times.

PROJECT INFO_ - Location: Coldrerio, Canton Ticino, Switzerland - Project type: Professional project - Individual/Grup work: Grup work - Role in the process: designer, drawer - Exact contribution: design underground floor, drowing - Level of the project: Architectural competition - Carried out: September 2015 - Supervisor: Arch. Aldo Celoria, info@celoria.ch The project for the new “intergenerational-district� of Coldrerio has been developed by a careful and thorough analysis of the existing structures. The study of the sector buildings and existing free spaces have provided a solid basis to allow the development of the project concept. First it was decided to bank the Town Hall building, transforming it into a polyvalent community centre. In this way, the project reconstructs the urban front of the city with the same tall and similar size of the other buildings. This selection shows the clear desire to minimize the occupation of the ground, to leave the public park space. The new volume of the Elderly House is a compact building that offers no interruption to the urban front organizing commercial spaces on the street. Common areas are on the ground floor overlooking the public park, facilitating the exchange and integration among different age groups. All the service areas are located on the other side, creating a more intimate space which they will positioned the outdoor spaces of the Polyvalent Centre with the external learning areas, vegetable gardens for the elderly and the Elementary School playgrounds. The park maintains the current characteristics of a free and spontaneous garden and the idea is made stronger with walkways in English gravel. Simple exercise equipment, design the different rest and relation areas between the different zones of the park.

PORTFOLIO - Executive summary

WHY APPLY FOR TU DELFT? In the course of my life, I have always wanted to study architecture and I never ever thought to change the direction of my studies. One of the main reasons behind this, has been growing up and watching my father work as a surveyor. I have always admired him, and hoped to fulfill a career to his stature.When I started my technical studies as a surveyor I started to get interested in architecture and, continuing my studies at University of Applied Sciences and Arts of South Switzerland, this interest in Architecture, became my passion. During my Bachelor degree, I realized the importance of the relationship between space and man. In the future, I hope to be able to plan the best use of these two characteristics. Once finished with university I would like to practice as an architect traveling around the world, utilizing my experiences across several continents to influence my practice as an Architect. I am interested in studying at TU Delft for two main reasons. Firstly, it is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, where you can learn with what attitude to deal with the early stages of the design and the spirit with which to carry it forward. The second is the variety of students from around the world, which will enhance my studies and these interactions will provide opportunities to expand my personal cultural background. In my opinion, the MSc Program offers excellent opportunities and this is the main reason for my application. There are three aspects that are foremost: Firstly, I want to complete my education with a master in Architecture. Secondly, I am generally interested in intensifying my knowledge of Architecture, sustainability, urbanism, structure and new development. Thirdly, I wish to enlarge my personal portfolio and make it more international as well as my intercultural understanding and competence through contact with international participants. For my hypothetical thesis project I intend to make an architectural project, which takes into account; space, light, materials and feelings,which are conveyed to people. I would like to continue studying the various possibilities to use renewable energy because in the course of study I have done so far I have found this topic of great interest. I am a dreamer and I like to fantasize about new ways to make things easier and more functional so as to improve my life and that of others.
