SCHOLARS’DAYGUESTSPEAKER 11:00AM(BrindleyAuditorium)  Dr.BenjaminPiercereceived a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Colorado. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, where he is Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson PraƩ Chair. His research interests focus on populaƟon geneƟcs, geneƟcs, evoluƟon, and ecology of amphibians and curriculum and course development, including mulƟdisciplinary science, community-based research, and geneƟcs instrucƟon. In 2012-2013 he also received the Exemplary Teaching Award at Southwestern University from the Board of Higher EducaƟon and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. On a lighter note, the geneƟcs class at UMHB is currently using the textbook he authored — “GeneƟcs: A Conceptual Approach”.

Abstract:TheGeorgetownsalamander,Eurycea naufragia,isa springͲandcaveͲdwellingsalamanderthatisknownfromonly15 sitesincentralTexas.RapidurbanizaƟonthroughoutitsrange putsallknownpopulaƟonsatriskandthespeciesiscurrently beingconsideredforlisƟngundertheEndangeredSpeciesAct.
