technical analysis markthal rotterdam, mvrdv objective: AN INVESTIGATION INTO A PROJECT THAT HOUSES A PUBLIC PROGRAM / INFRASTRUCTURE AND MANAGES COMPLEX SYSTEMS. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO BREAK DOWN AND DIAGRAM THESE SYSTEMS IN ORDER TO FURTHER UNDERSTAND THE INTENTIONS BEHIND THE ARCHITECT AND THIER DESIGN.

abstract: THE MARKTHAL BUILDING IN ROTTERDAM, NL WAS DESIGNED AS A SUBMISSION FOR A COMPETITION THAT SOUGHT TO EXTEND THE EXISTING OPEN AIR MARKET WITH A COVERED ADDITION. MVRDV'S DESIGN CONSISTED OF TWO RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS THAT HOUSED THE COVERED MARKET ADDITION INBETWEEN. THIS ALLOWED TWO LARGE OPENINGS TO BE FORMED -- ORIENTED AND OPENING UP TOWARDS THE CITY. THE MARKTHAL HAS SINCE BECOME A HUB OF ACTIVITY AND A VITAL PIECE OF URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE.

i. site orientation THE MARKTHAL BUIILDING WAS INTENDED TO TRANSFORM THE UBRAN ENVIRONMENT AND ACT AS A CATALYST FOR THE AREA'S ECONOMY. A STRONG PUBLIC PRESECENCE WAS NEEDED IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK -THE BUILDING WAS THEN ORIENTED INTO BINNENROTTE SQUARE. VISUAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTIONS ALLOW RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS TO EASILY FLOOD IN AND OUT OF THE MARKET.IN ADDITION, THE ORIENTATION PLAYED A ROLE IN DEFENDING THE LARGE GLAZED AREAS FROM DIRECT SOUTHERN LIGHT. market to plaza relation - axon

ii. structure THE TOP APARTMENTS OF THE RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS FORM THE KEYSTONE OF THE ARCHED MARKET HALL, SPANNING 36 M AND CARRIED BY CONCRETE WALLS. THE PROJECT HAS A FOOTPRINT OF ~120 X 90 M AND STANDS 40 M TALL. UNDERNEATH THE BUILDING A 4 STOREY DEEP UNDERGROUND CARPARK HAS BEEN CREATED. THE BUILDINGS FOUNDATIONS ARE A SAND LAYER ONTOP OF A SOFT CLAY LAYER AT A DEPTH OF AROUND 30 M.

iii. passive systems THE BUILDING IS CONNECTED TO CITY HEATING AND A THERMAL STORAGE SYSTEM UNDERNEATH THE BUILDING WHICH WILL ALSO HEAT AND COOL A NUMBER OF ADJACENT BUILDINGS IN THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE VARIOUS FUNCTIONS IN THE BUILDING CAN EXCHANGE HEAT AND COLD. FOR THE HALL ITSELF EXTENSIVE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE INTERIOR CLIMATE WITH AN EXTREMELY LOW ENERGY USE. THE HALL IS NATURALLY VENTILATED, UNDERNEATH THE GLASS FAÇ ADE FRESH AIR FLOWS IN, IT RISES TOWARDS THE ROOF AND LEAVES THE HALL THROUGH VENTILATION SHAFTS IN THE ROOF. THIS IS A THERMIC SYSTEM WHICH CAN FUNCTION WITHOUT ANY INSTALLATIONS.

iv. construction methods & materials THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TWO SIDES WAS DONE FAST AND ECONOMICAL BY MEANS OF TUNNEL SHUTTERING. THE CONTRACTOR CONSTRUCTED THE FORM USING REINFORCED CONCRETE AND SMALL WI-FI-DEVICES INDICATING WHETHER THE CONCRETE WAS HARDENING ACCORDING TO PLAN. THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY ALLOWED FOR THE CONTRACTOR TO PROPERLY GAUGE THE CORRECT TIMING TO ADD ADDITIONAL LEVELS AS THEY NEEDED TO HAVE A CERTAIN STRENGTH TO BUILD UPON.

temporary disaster relief shelter portable modular units objective: AN INVESTIGATION INTO CREATING A SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMICAL PRE-FAB SYSTEM TO BE USED TO TIMES OF NATURAL DISASTERS.

abstract: proper and sustainable temporary housing design lies in its transportability. in order for the dwellings to be transported they must be able to be unpacked and packed onto some standard form of shipping packaging-in this case the standard shipping palette is being used. the custom palette allows for a kit of parts to be developed that can create structure and floor systems for the modular panels to be shipped on. thus, there is no waste in shipping materials and a new possibility to think about repackaging and reuse.

community sports facility san juan, puerto rico objective: CREATION OF A CATALYST OF CHANGE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY OF SAN JUAN. THE PROPOSAL MUST DOUBLE AS A HUB OF ACTIVITY IN NORMAL FUNCTION & A SAFE HAVEN FOR THE COMMUNITY IN TIMES OF A NATURAL DISASTER.

abstract: THE RESULT IS A LARGE URBAN SUPERSTRUCTURE THAT CARRIES SMALLER BUILDINGS WITHIN. THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS ARE THEN ORGANIZED AND HUNG WITHIN A STRUCTURAL CAGE. ORGANIZING THE PROGRAM IN THIS MANNER STARTS TO ADRESS THE URBAN CONDITIONS OF THE SITE -- THE FORMAL AND INFROMAL HOUSING. THE PROPOSED BUILDING THEN ACTS AS A THRESHOLD BETWEEN THESE TWO SYSTEMS, CATCHING PARTICIPANTS IN A FROZEN MOMENT IN BETWEEN.

1. DEFINE BUILDING FOOTPRINT IS FORMED TO CREATE TWO SEPERATE ZONES -- SPORTS FACILITY & TEMPORARY HOUSING. THESE TWO PROGRAMATIC ZONES ARE ORIENTED TO ACCEPT IN THE RESIDENTS OF THE INFORMAL HOUSING & COMMUNITY TO FILTER THROUGHT THE SITE AND NEW ADJACEENT HOUSING.

1I. LIFT THE TWO DEFINED ZONES ARE LIFTED INTO THE AIR TO CREATE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF IMPACT ON THE SITE ARE POSSIBLE, LEAVING ROOM FOR THE POSSIBLITY OF LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN SPACE. (SOMETHING NOT AS PRESENT IN THIS AREA) .

1II. POPULATE THE PROGRAMATIC ZONES ARE SPLIT UP INTO INDIVDIUAL BUILDINGS THAT POPULATE THE OVERARCHING STRUCTURE ALLOWING THEM TO FLOAT ABOUT THE SITE. THIS GIVES A TEMPORAL/INFORMAL FEELING THAT IS SIMILAR TO URBAN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SITE.

1V. PEEL A LANDSCAPE PARK IS INTRUDCED AND PEELS UP FROM THE GROUND PLANE TO CREATE A SPECIFIC APPROACH TO ENTERING AND GOING UNDER THE FACILITIES. THIS CREATES A CORNER CONDITION AT THE STREET AND INFORMAL HOUSING THAT ACTS AS A FUNNEL OF PEDESTRIANS INTO THE SITE. COMMUNITY PROGRAMATIC PIECES ARE THEN INTRODUCED INSIDE OF THE LANSCAPE.

V. VEIL A SCREEN WALL SYSTEM IS ATTACHED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING VOLUME. THIS SCREEN WILL ACT AS A SHADING DEVICE BUT ALSO AS A VEIL BETWEEN THE ACTIVITIES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE FACILITY. (REVEALING CERTAIN MOMENTS OF CIRCULATION/MOBILITY) THE BUILDING WILL DISPLAY THE PARTICIPANTS IN A STAGE-LIKE SETTING TO THE COMMUNITY. .

VI. OCCUPY A COMPLETED BUILDING FORM ACTS AS A URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE FOR COMMUNITY RESIDENTS TO OCCUPY AND INTERACT WITH.
