Women’s Basketball Coaches Michael Berry begins his 4th season at the helm of the University of Mobile women’s basketball program, after taking over halfway through the 2007-08 season. Mobile is 43-36 with Berry in charge. Prior to becoming the head man, Berry served four years as an assistant, with Mobile advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in two of those seasons. Last season, the Lady Rams finished 17-12 and climbed into the NAIA Top-25 for the first time since 2007 when they appeared at No. 24 in the Jan. 11th edition of the poll. Mobile also featured one of the best defenses under Berry’s leadership last year, ranking 2nd in blocks per game, 5th in defensive rebounds, 6th in total blocks and 8th in field goal percentage defense. The team set school records for fewest points allowed in a season and total blocks. Aside from team accomplishments, five players have earned All-GCAC honors since Berry took over. Danielle Goodly was named NAIA AllAmerican in 2009 and Crystal Hutchinson was named GCAC Freshman of the Year in 2008. Players have also set six school records under Berry’s watch (single-season blocks, single-season steals, single-game scoring, single-game FG made, single-game FG att, single-game blocked shots). Berry’s 2007-08 team also ranked in the Top-20 in steals per game, defensive rebounds per game and total rebound defense. Berry’s coaching experience is lengthy. He served as head coach at Harvest Christian Academy in Pasadena, TX and Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA. He was assistant coach at NCAA I Sam Houston State, Lon Morris College and Oklahoma City University. After leading Oklahoma City to a NAIA National Championship as a player in 1991, Berry helped coach the team to a pair of national titles in 1999 and 2000. He is a 1991 bachelor of arts graduate in mass communications from Oklahoma City and received his master of liberal arts in management/leadership from Oklahoma City in 1996. Berry is a native of North Carolina and is married to Geeta. He has two children, Mycah, 20, and Rekha, 13.
