Mann EAST develops online learning materials for future generations Leadership Team Neha Tiwari Subashri Garimalla Christian Mendez David Galicia
Overview Online education is not a thing of the future, it’s a NOW thing. Forms of online classes have been around since the inception of the internet. We are building our own at Mann EAST. The idea for EAST on Adobe was hatched on the first day of school,
when two members of the current leadership team showed interest in creating web-based instruction. Learning how to use Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Photoshop were necessary components of the project. The online courses will include step-by-step instructions, video tutorials, discussion boards and forums, and project rubrics. We’re taking our show in the road, too. We’ve connected with the director of educational services at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Little Rock and we are planning technology lessons for their young patrons.

Process: The website is estimated to have taken over 200 hours of work. It is ongoing and requires continual administration. From gathering information and reporting, photography, coding, and creating design elements, the site has been a huge undertaking. Considering it’s almost entirely a student-managed project, the results are quite remarkable. The web editors have limited time in which to work on the site each day, and they each have multiple projects they are managing.
NOTHING AN EAST MINDSET Stepping into an EAST classroom is probably like landing on Mars, for those that have never experienced it before. It’s different, to say the least. We start with a problem and then seek the answers - usually on our own. In this regard, it’s exactly like the world we are about to step into. Leadership, team dynamics, and a resilience to failure are some of the skills we must develop in order to be successful. Our facilitators ask a lot from us. They ask us to create something from nothing. This stands to be one of the most difficult aspects of the EAST environment. Like being on Mars, we have to band together, explore uncharted territory, and find our way back home again. It’s exhilarating, chaotic, momentous, and even a little scary sometimes. I feel taller, and I’m certain my skin has gotten thicker. I expected to learn a little about technology in EAST, but I didn’t expect to get brave and fearless. EAST is about me (squared), and I intend on continuing this trend in the years to come. - Excerpt from a Mann EAST blog

At Mann Magnet, EAST students are creating online learning courses that will allow individuals to experience software such as Flash, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
We are currently working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Arkansas to bring our resources into the clubs. The Director of Educational Programs, Shelby Kriz, is excited about the opportunity to have EAST in her clubs.

When the Pulaski County Humane Society needed help with some signs, we delivered. Board President Christine Henderson posted a request on Facebook for the media, and EAST students answered the call. After contacting Ms. Henderson, several students collaborated on a design and delivered the finished products.

When we say we’re going green, we mean it. We’ve constructed a hydroponic growing system inside of our classroom.

Using an air-cooled mega reflector and fluorescent lighting, we churn out garden herbs for our Mann family. The filtration system consists of three interconnected 5-gallon buckets circulated by a
submersible pump. Terra cotta stones act as a foundation for the root systems, and feeding is a careful balancing act of nutrients and additives. According to a recent visitor, “it brings a wonderful organic feel to the classroom.”
We’re currently developing a plan to help local organizations create hydroponic window farms for their facilities.

Carroway has been on fire. He and his partner, Julian Ricks, have been creating MP3’s on a variety of topics such as sports, food, and student life. They have generated a lot of buzz around campus, and they are currently accepting topic ideas from the student body. You can hear some of their work being broadcasted on our school website, horacemannmagnet.com. Submit your ideas to an EAST student today and they may be talking about it soon.
