ABOUT SHAFF

THE SHEFFIELD ADVENTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 Since ShAFF started in 2006, 100% of the audience have said they will come back again and recommend the festival to a friend. We’re proud of that! ‘How To’ Guide There are 80 films showing at ShAFF this year. Films are grouped into themed sessions lasting between one and two hours. There are 4 Adrenaline, 6 Bike, 8 Climb, 2 Mountain, 2 Run, 3 Ski & Board, 5 Spirit Of Adventure and 3 Surf & Kayak sessions. There are also 4 screenings of our special ‘Young Adventurer’ family-friendly children’s sessions and this year two new ‘Teen Screens’ for teenagers. If that’s not enough, there’s our ‘Adventure Bites’ never-ending loop of the best short films from the festival, screening all weekend. Sessions are spread across the weekend to help you maximise your viewing. There are also a variety of lectures and special events by highprofile climbers, runners and bikers. In between times you can relax in the café / bar with live music, get active, check out the kit sale and the all-new Cityscape Cinema (a 2 hour outdoor event above the trail station courtesy of Red Bull) and, if it all gets too much, have a free sports-massage! Tickets are sold for individual sessions and events. You can buy tickets individually or in a discounted carnet. 4

19.00 Fri 1st

14.45 Sun 3rd

21.15 Fri 1st

Nick will be opening the 2013 ShAFF with a talk on Friday 1 March. His lecture will cover material from his acclaimed book ‘Echoes’, published by Sheffield’s Vertebrate Publishing, including first ascents in Peru and insights into life as a prison guard. He also hopes to include his ascent of the Slovak Direct on Denali in 2012 with Andy Houseman, and some recent action in Scottish winter and on Welsh rock.

For the past 4 years Lukasz has worked overtime to be considered among the top adventure photographers in the world. This is your chance to find out what it’s really like to live the “Life of a Pro”. Is it all about glamour and jet setting around the world? Lukasz will be setting the story straight, illustrating his tales with his amazing images and films.

Hosted by comedian, climber and author, the one and only Niall Grimes, the annual Sheffield Adventure Film Festival Quiz is like no other. It’s a highlight of the Friday night schedule. (Many will fondly recall last year’s ‘Celebrity Body Builder Chimera Picture Round’.)

Gordon Stainforth Lecture (90 mins)

Nicky Spinks Lecture (90 mins)

12.15 Sat 2nd

16.45 Sun 3rd

Writer Gordon Stainforth will give an illustrated talk about his highly-acclaimed book, ‘Fiva: An Adventure That Went Wrong’, which tells the epic true story of a near-death experience on a mountain in Norway in 1969. He will be talking about his early climbing leading up to the Fiva epic, his return trip 40 years later, and how he came to write the book.

Nicky Spinks is a multi-record-holder and something of a legend in her own lifetime. She is the current ladies record holder for the greatest number of Lakeland Fells climbed in 24 hours. In July of last year, in less than perfect conditions, she broke the ladies Bob Graham record, running over 74 miles, summiting 42 peaks and ascending 28,500 in the process. Her time of 18-hours and 12-minutes was made all the more difficult as early this year she had to have precancerous cells removed from her body. Nicky will the describe the highs and lows of going from 4-miles to the 24-Hour Mountain Distance Record, including her own personal battle in dealing with cancer.

The story of the first recorded trek to Mt.Everest. In 1968 five local students made a remarkable trek. Two of the team, David Peckett and John Driskell, have recently written a book about their adventures and will give a talk at ShAFF. The Dragon’s Back Premiere & Q&A (90 mins) 20.45 Sat 2nd The legendary Dragon’s Back Race™ follows the mountainous spine of Wales for 320 kilometres with 17,000 metres of ascent across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain. 28

Pete Whittaker Lecture (90 mins) 12.30 Sun 3rd Pete started climbing at a young age with his parents. To date, at only 21, he has made numerous first ascents and difficult repeats in the UK, Europe and America. Follow Pete on his journey as he describes and illustrates a behind-the-scenes look at the wild world of wide-crack-climbing.
