The Demons’ permanent team captains each year are elected by their peers. At the annual football awards dinner, they are announced and receive an award named for the heroic Joe Delaney, the 1981 AFC Rookie of the Year who died in a 1983 attempt to rescue three drowning children. One survived. June 29 marked the 31st anniversary of Delaney’s noble, unselfish effort. His teammates, and anyone who knew Joe Delaney, were not surprised about what he did. It was who he was, and it personifies why we will always treasure his memory.
