welcome About the Awards The Mosman Design Awards is a Council event held every two years to celebrate outstanding contributions to the built environment in Mosman. The objectives of the Awards are to: ยง Promote excellence in urban design and heritage conservation ยง Recognise positive contributions to the streetscape ยง Recognise sympathetic conservation of heritage items and

buildings within heritage conservation areas ยง Increase community awareness of high quality development.

Sixteen nominations were received for the 2017 Mosman Design Awards and nearly 436 online votes were registered for the People's Choice Award. The Mosman Design Awards is an award winning event that has been described as a proactive, attractive and innovative response to public education and awareness.

As with previous years, there has been a strong focus on social media and its use in the promotion and engagement of the community in the Awards.


Robert Staas Robert is a director at NBRS+Partners, a leading team of heritage specialists. He has completed a number of significant Heritage Conservation projects including Wynyard Park, Capitol Square, Grace Bros, Broadway, and St Marks Church, Darling Point. Robert has also developed Heritage Strategies for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the Reserve Bank of Australia. He has served as a heritage advisor to various local councils, including over twenty years at Mosman and during that time, served as an expert witness in a number of cases in the Land and Environment Court.

Nick Tobias As founder and Principal of Tobias Partners, Nick has had fifteen years experience designing and delivering projects ranging from bespoke residential commissions, to high-end hospitality, retail, and commercial projects. Some of these have involved adaptive re-use and working with delicate heritage items and/or zones. He has served as a judge on a number of design awards and has appeared as an expert witness in the Land & Environment Court of NSW, his particular emphasis being on design quality, urban design and contextual/urban fit.


Judges Robert Staas Gabrielle Morrish Nick Tobias

Gabrielle Morrish Gabrielle is the Managing Director of GMU a leading urban design and architecture practice in Sydney. She has held many senior positions in Government and private practice, delivering many of the leading design quality codes and documents used in NSW today including the Residential Flat Design Code and Seniors Living Design Guidelines. Gabrielle is also an Urban Design expert in the Land and Environment Court and is on a number of Design Review Panels and IAPs in NSW. She has been the chair and juror in many design excellence competitions. Gabrielle was the winner of the 2010 UDIA Women in Development Leadership award.
