The structure will be supported by pile footings. While smaller units can be prefabricated and transported to site, the structure can be transported in panals and assemble on site. Soil can be use to fill the pocket to allow growth of wild plants.

Once constructed, nature will start to reclaim the place and this is allowed. Metals will change its colour due to oxidation and will eventually dissappear due to chemical reaction, before that plants and animal will occupy the sculpture. The changes represent the concept of growth and the power of nature.

Herring Island Map Source: Park Victoria

Map showing the relationship of Melbourne CBD and Herring Island

Herring Island

Herring Island locates at the south east direction from Melbourne, resting on the centre of Yarra River. It is currently an important environmental and recreational site for the surrounding suburbs. Vary indigious animals and plants can be found on the island and it is also the home of several native birds. On the other hand, the island is a recreational hotspot in the weekend. Artificial items like barbecue stove are established and there are some ‘environmental sculptures’ placed on the island. Families can visit the island by boat for its natureness and artistic atmosphere.

Herring Island was once a stone quarry that had served the nearby region. Latter days after the extraction had end it became a slit deposit site. In the 90s the committee turned the island into a park and ecological reserve. In 1997, 8 sculptures are added on the island, and it become the Herring Island that is known today.

In the beginning of 21th century, the Australian government have finally recognized their mistake and the misfortune of the abrorignial people. They propagted the ‘reconciliation’ campaign to recover the relationship of the native people. Aiming to preserve and continue the traditional culture, people started to apperciate and respect the abroriginal lifestyle, thus promoting a more multicultural environment for Australia.

2 . Ele S.

Indigious Australian people lived around the Yarra River long before European settlement. Several sites and evidences were found along the catchment. They enjoyed the freedom of life and believed in the importance of harmonic coexistance with the nature. They had developed unique lifestyle, art and beliefs. Since the arrival of the European the land of the Abroriginals was claimed as ‘terra nullius’ meaning ‘no man land’ - and both the land and life were interrupted by colonization and exploitation. Their population had decreased, their status as a human had been ‘demoted’, and their culture were disappearing.

Surroundings The site’s proximity to the river gives a great view of the river and the city. Most openings are toward this direction to give visitors the opporunity to look at the river. Since the proposed building also act as a gallery, the original gallery at the north part of the island will need to be demolished to make space. It may also need some rearrangement for the sculptures as the building will occupy some of the space. 0 1 2

Programs and Structure

The idea is to sense the feelings of aboriginal lifestyle through different stages. To respond the given brief, 4 ‘Halls’ are placed at different levels. Elevated Hall 1 will give a open atmosphere and scenery to the visitor, as a representation of free lifestyle of the pre-colonial era. Visitor will then experience a dramatic fall as they enter Hall 2. The room darken as it descends, the ‘dark days’ of exploitation have come. Yet a glimpse of exterior will reminisce the previous bright days.

The form of the building was created by doodling on the shape of the island. Once the shape have been defined, explorations of orientation, circulation programs, arrangement of space, functions and approaches are done. Further stages of the design development include fitting the brief, access regulations and and basic structural performances.

The building will provide obstacle-free pathway for the disabled.

Hall 3 acts as a transitional path from bottom to ground level, a long, wide ramp with openings at one side and the top as a representation of promising future. It metaphorically present the long yet decisive period for the reconciliation stage. Getting to Hall 4, which is an open stage, it is again surrounded by nature’s flavoured diversity.

The building will apply a concrete footing system which support the steel frame structure of lower floor and upper floor. First floor will be concrete floor slab as well. Ground floor exterior wall will be red clay brick veneer wallas the Australian Continent is famous for its ‘redness’ Ground flooring is polished concreted, and partition wall will use timber stud wall. The upper level, while fundamentally using steel frame structure, have glazings at the two sides which facing the river. However the glazing will be covered by timber panel, it resembles the traditional housing for the aboriginal construction. The entry and back side will use the same brick wall as the ground floor.

The MATRIX The results are awesome. For each change in parameters the subtle transformation of each units are unpredictable but elegant. We like the relationships between each unit which is subjected to the graph type we have assigned. All of these results are visually complex but the logic behind is simple. This recalls the simplicity of the precedent Yorkshire Diamond.

36

These are the spread page extracted from the journal of my third design studio. It was a group project. They show the processes of parameteric design as a matrix.

37

All the base unit design are come from natural objects: particularly minerals structure but also spatial occupation of cells and behavior of animals. We found that minerals structure is good to represent complexity but a bit weak in showing trends. Minerals structure create more sharp, geometrical shadows while the others make organic shades. The ‘linear’ graph type as well as ‘Bezier’ graph type do well in showing size changes, but ‘sine’ graph is more dynamic. Last, we love all varieties of curves but we are kin to use curves with higher curvature to represent the dynamics and trend of grow. Overall, this technique should be suitable as a gateway project due to its visual complexity, with is iconic and promotional.

The site is 20-28 La Trobe Street. The characteristics of the site is long, narrow, and being surrounded by relatively tall buildings. These characteristics have created the challenges of incorporating all the prescribed functions, particularly the 300 car parking spaces, onto the site. Because of the limited space, I choose mechanical car stacker system to facilitate 300 cars. I believe car stacker is efficient, energy wise and help saving precious floor area. I also want the car parking system become a true icon of the building itself, therefore the car parking tower is located at the centre of the site, receiving maximum visibility. Allocations of different parts of the buildings are based on the functions: showroom is being placed facing La Trobe Street because it is the main street of Melbourne, where busy traffic gives the advantage of visibility. Café and mini-golf course at north because I want them to receive good natural lighting condition. Offices are divided into two parts to obtain visual balance. The natural fall of the site is used to make space for the car service centre.

Since the car park is now the most important part of the design, I exploit its dominance. Firstly the mechanical nature is expressed by exposed structure of pre-weathered steel. Secondly beams and columns are ‘flying’ out from the structure, literally invading the site. Thirdly, office spaces are based on a organic stacking of boxes, creating terrace-like structure, which contrast to the regularity of the car park framing. Lastly, openings are created in an irregular manner, symbolically express the domination of automobile empire over the building. From here a visual complexity is achieved by two contrasting element of the design: the car park and the others, yet the intricate relationships between these two is acknowledged by the texture and structure.
