H i Th e r e ! I’m Mathias Vanthienen, I love kebabs, promoting events, being creative, googling stuff and riding my bike. I’m looking for experience in a company that’s all about creating awesome things. I have an educational background in Product Development. (bachelor & master at the University of Antwerp) I’m particularly interested in the marketing side of products and services. I want to perfect the skill of Making ideas appealing to a certain audience. At this time my real life experience is limited to branding and promoting my own club night concept Mint and creating content for Undefined (weareundefined.be) as an intern. With this portfolio I plan on hauling in more experience. Landing an internship would be great, landing a job would be awesome. Enjoy!

part 1 graphic design

Min t In 2012, me and 2 friends decided to start a club night because we missed the kind of music we wanted to hear at the clubs in Antwerp. As the designer of the group, I get to make all the artwork and visuals. Mint has been my graphic sandbox for the past 3 years. A selection of the artwork I did can be found on the next few pages.

I often cross distances up to 15 km by bike. Certainly when I have to go into the city this is the most efficient means of transport. It’s always a pain to arrive all sweaty, smelly and even sometimes soaked from a rain shower. And even if I have spare clothes with me, I still end up with the problem that I have to hang my clothes to dry somewhere. Bivot is a universal storing system for clothing, both pants & coats (or other tops) which spreads out the surface of clothing to avoid mildew & heats from the inside when needed. The system is an affordable solution for employees of mainly small businesses in cities. The product comes with a ventilation solution for a standard wardrobe so that everything is hidden away and doesn’t require extra space.

a l um en to s Alumentos Carpaccio tools was an exercise on both human factors & branding. We started off in groups of 3 to create a brand identity. With Alumentos we designed toolkits for kitchen hobbyists. Each member of the group designed their own toolkit. Besides the carpaccio kit there was a cocktail kit & a kit to make macarons under our brand, each with the same house style & materials.

v is ua l i z at i o n Sketching is probably the most important tool in the ideation process. I usually start off with quick drafts on paper to explore both functional & esthetic aspects. Later on I start making more realistic renders either on paper with markers & pencils or digital with a Wacom tablet. In the further development, cardboard, foam or clay models are made, to determine the actual dimensions (mainly for human factor purposes) or to experiment with the shape (mainly for esthetic purposes), or even to present an idea. For the finalization of an idea, I use 3D software like SolidWorks (for more technical products) or Rhinoceros & Cinema 4D (for more conceptual ideas) I mainly use 2D software in the design process to quickly make presentable visualizations for short, more conceptual assignments (mainly pitches) or for graphic design purposes.

test i ng To make sure a product doesn’t only work in fairytales, I always test the very basic principles used within the product. These principles can be human factors related or mechanism related. The test results range from interpretations of observations with users (usability tests) to basic measurements (dimensions, weight, moisture, etc.) for more technical questions. Most test setups are built to test one basic mechanism/aspect, but my knowledge of Arduino also allows me to build more complex & realistic setups.

so ft wa r e I’m an eager learner, especially in software. When I want something done and it can be done with software, I’ll invest time in learning to work with that new software until I have the result I was looking for rather than asking someone experienced to do it. I discovered Photoshop & Illustrator at the age of 12 and have been expanding my software backpack ever since. I’ve not only taught myself 2D graphic software but also 3D software, video editing software & sound design software. Self-taught: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Cinema 4D, V-ray, Keyshot, Resolume Arena, HTML5, CSS3, Ableton Live Learned in school: Indesign, Rhinoceros, Arduino, SolidWorks, Sketchbook Pro Learning right now: Javascript, Java.

Co n g r at s ! You have just reached the end of this portfolio. By now you know a few things about me, which skills I possess, what I’m into, what color socks I like to wear, well... not really (it’s blue if you really want to know). What I haven’t stated clearly yet is the position in which I’d see myself useful. With my Product Development background I have a lot of insight in the wider innovation process. I specifically see myself working in a team, brainstorming about the commercial side of products & services and also designing whole campaigns & experiences from start to end. I’m looking forward to working with you!
