RESONANT SPACES

PERFORMANCE SOUNDING SPACES – 7TH BIENNIAL

The results of this research are used for soundspace performances, installations and compositions, exploring new ways to understand the relation between sound, space and listener. In this case, we propose a performance that goes from a scientific speech about the research to an immersive soundspace composition. The performance shows information about the research on Resonant Spaces, simulating one of the studied soundspaces with the goal to create an experience between the bodies (of the public), space and sound. The chosen case study for this performance is the Inchindown Oil Tank in Scotland, world record of reverberation: 80 seconds at T60. The idea is combine the studied space with the existing space of the symposium room, mixing the field recordings taken at Inchindown with recordings in situ within the conference.

To make a contrast between both spaces, the

performance combines them and differentiates them into an aural cloud that goes and comes. These audios will be played through convolution reverb to recreate the Inchindown soundspace, as if the symposium was inside the tank. A spatialization of sounds will be added to the experience, in order to recreate the way in which the sound wave travels within Inchindown, showing the influence of architectural morphology on this phenomenon. 1. The 4 speakers within the perimeter of the room will make a spatialization task, by generating a surround effect that recreates the way in which the sound wave propagates within Inchindown. 2.   The 2 microphones are for the speech and for vocal and instrumental interventions through the convolution reverb that simulates the acoustics of the tank. 3.   The sampler will shoot several field recordings taken inside the tank, to build a live composition of the recorded sounds. 4.   The recorder will play registered audios at the conference, using the convolution reverb.
