4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach this message: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Christ had come to seek and to save the lost, and so begins his ministry by calling people to repent and return to God. Their repentance would not be in vain, for God was at this time offering full amnesty, pardon and forgiveness to guilty sinners; reconciling his enemies to himself by taking as his own children those who were once children of wrath. Such fullness of grace and blessing is implied whenever Jesus refers to "the kingdom of heaven". That kingdom had come near in as much as the king who inaugurated it was standing among the people.

The Call of the First Disciples 4:18-19 As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen). He said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people." The call of Peter, Andrew, James and John is referred to in all four gospels. Christ knew these men before he met them, and called them first to follow him. The life of every Christian is a personal walk and relationship with Jesus Christ. God has a will for every individual life, and our responsibility is to seek to do his will. Yet in God’s wise plan his will for each individual coincides with his will for the whole church, and so God's servants are seen to serve him within the body of the church. In this way, whilst believers are called to a personal walk with God, no one ever walks alone. This was not Christ’s first meeting with Peter and Andrew; but it was this is the point at which they forsook all to follow him (just after the miraculous catch of fish).
