MAGIS Dear Seattle Prep parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends, One of the best parts of my job is signing thank you letters. I usually play some music (“Chant” is a favorite) and try to think about the donor with each letter I sign. That way the experience is more one of gratitude as opposed to robo-signing. While I am grateful to all who contribute to Prep in support of our Jesuit mission and the young people we are called to serve, I am especially drawn to our graduates from the 1930s and 40s. I think about what the school was like when these boys were here. And I have noticed in my past six years here that their giving to Prep is an annual one, part of a pattern of generosity that is just so edifying to ponder. I am also drawn to the other end of the spectrum, those very young graduates who likely do not have much to give but do so anyway. Some day, some president here at Prep will be writing to these graduates – 60 or 70 years down the line. Again, it is the pattern of generosity woven into a life lived in gratitude that is the key. Tuition does not fully support the work we do, nor should it. If we were to rely solely on tuition to pay for the cost of a Prep education, that education would be diminished. Why? Because we would lose those students who could not afford our tuition, and that kind of loss is something we should never be willing to absorb. Luckily, you, our benefactors, have decided to support our young people by making up the difference between tuition and Prep’s actual costs. In doing so, you literally transform lives by making Seattle Prep’s transformational Jesuit education within the reach of families who could not otherwise afford it. And, for this, we are so deeply grateful. You have blessed the lives of many due to your generosity, and I hope that, in turn, your lives are deeply blessed as well. Thank you for all you do to make Prep attainable for more students, and thereby a more wondrous place. Sincerely,

Julie and Dan Coleman ’74 Julie and Dan have enjoyed a long relationship with Seattle Prep. Their commitment began in 1974 when Dan graduated from Prep and has continued, in many roles and many forms. Their five sons, Scott ’98, Christopher ’03, Kevin ’04, Kelly ’07 and Riley ’11, all graduated from Seattle Prep as well. Both Julie and Dan have served on the Prep Board of Trustees (Julie 2000 – 06, Dan 2006 – 12). In addition, they served as Co -Chairs of the Growing in the Spirit Capital Campaign from 2001 – 2007. Julie and Dan seek the magis in all that they do and have instilled this same sense of striving for “the more” in their children. They have been blessed with the opportunity to participate in the future of Seattle Prep and believe in the concept of “paying it forward” so that the next generation of students at Prep have the same opportunities that their children experienced. They feel they have the responsibility to give back and Seattle Prep is one of their areas of philanthropic focus, both of time and money. Their philanthropy is inspired in part by their philanthropic mentors: Jeanne Marie and Rhoady Lee. Julie shared that Rhoady told her that philanthropy “needs to be taught, it does not come naturally.” The Lees’ examples of giving reaffirmed their own desire to do more. Another lesson they learned from Rhoady and Jeanne Marie is that giving of both time and money can and should be fun. To see that the fruits of your labor have an impact on individuals and society in general is a gift that keeps on giving. For the Colemans, Catholic education has always been a priority. They believe in a Jesuit education because it is different; it forms men and women for others. They see it in their own children and their friends. They leave Prep knowing they have a responsibility to give back to the world. The dedicated faculty and staff at Prep push young women and men to discern about their decisions, while challenging them to become “women and men for others.”

Alexander Zarutskie ’11 “I feel like I was given so many opportunities that it is my personal responsibility to help others experience Prep like I did.”

When Alexander was asked to make a gift of $20.11 to the Class of 2011 Endowment, he gave $20.11. But Alexander went a step further, making the decision to give $20.11 each month. For a freshman in college, this was an impressive commitment. But Alexander felt it was his personal responsibility to give back to the place that gave him so many opportunities. “Prep helped me create lasting relationships. Prep solidified Jesuit values in me.” Alexander wanted to be sure that others had the same opportunities. He embodies the magis through his understanding of the importance of caring for others, and this has helped him direct his life. Currently a sophomore at Western Washington University, Alexander plans to major in dentistry. He serves the community through the Dental Health Coalition, an organization that provides dental care to people in Bellingham. He is able to learn more about his chosen profession while helping with free fillings and educating others about dental health. Alexander’s desire to volunteer was shaped by his retreat experience at Prep. The retreat program is where Alexander says he learned firsthand the value of being a person for others. This Jesuit value has become a guiding principle that informs Alexander’s choices today. When asked what message he would give to current Prep students, he stresses how important it is to enjoy the experience while realizing how a Jesuit education is preparing them for lives beyond high school. “Now that I am at Western Washington University, I know how well prepared I was for college. I will always support Prep as a way of showing my gratitude and to show my commitment to future generations of Prep students.”

Roger Fritz ’63 “The door was opened to Prep for me and I felt like I was at Prep by a gift of God.” Roger Fritz is filled with gratitude as he remembers his days at Seattle Prep. He considers his Prep education instrumental in laying the foundation for the rest of his life. Growing up on Queen Anne Hill as one of eight kids, his parents could ill afford private school. His mother, however, wanted Roger to have a Jesuit education and was determined to have Roger attend Seattle Prep. Roger says, “The door was opened to Prep for me and I felt like I was at Prep by a gift of God.” Roger shows his appreciation for his Prep education by contributing to the Annual Fund. He hopes that in doing so, others like him can have the door opened for them. “Someone helped me. This is my way to pay it forward and that is what it’s all about.” Roger has made a gift to the Annual Fund every year for more than 25 years. He also volunteers every year to reach out to fellow classmates to ask for their support. When asked about the magis, Roger replied, “Magis is the understanding of moral values, sense of responsibility and work ethic. Not if, but how to put all these things together.” He describes himself as a team player rather than a leader. He sees his lived Jesuit values in a humble light, explaining, “These are things that I can do to make a difference.” Those who know Roger know that he is indeed a leader in demonstrating the core values of a Jesuit education. Roger lives and leads his life by the magis.

“There is an opportunity awaiting you with the Parent Association!” Kay explains, “We want to create a conversation between parents and their children. The Parent Association would like all parents to have a focal point. We want to educate parents on the pressures our students are feeling about getting good grades, drugs/alcohol and social pressures such as Facebook and texting. We want to deal with real issues.” The Hanafins are clear that they do not want to impose their viewpoint or that of the Parent Association on others, but create a

Kathy Krueger “Working here has been a rich and wonderful experience. I receive a lot more back than I give.” Kathy Krueger, Director of Counseling at Seattle Prep, celebrates the magis as part of her daily work with students, parents and colleagues. She says, “It is a privilege to work at Seattle Prep and to be part of the Jesuit magis and to know as a lay person I play a role in helping with this shared ministry.” Kathy was hired by then President, Fr. Healy, in 1979. She began her career as a faculty member, teaching Collegio. While teaching Collegio, Prep began to grow and her outstanding interpersonal skills were called upon in service of the college counseling program. Kathy and her husband Walt are also parents to Prep grads, Kate ’01 and Michael ’01. She shares that her children “had a phenomenal education that prepared them for not only college, but also for life.” Kathy feels that, “I am here to serve and walk with students during this time of their lives, as they emerge into adulthood.” Prep has been privileged to have Kathy working as an instructor and later as a pioneer in helping to form Prep’s college counseling program that she now directs. “I have always felt encouraged and supported at what I do here at Prep. Working here has been a rich and wonderful experience. I receive a lot more back than I give. To me it’s a privilege and a joy.” Kathy and Walt have chosen three philanthropies that reflect their faith and values: Seattle Prep, Christ Our Hope Parish and Kirkland Interfaith Transitional Housing (KITH). Kathy sees giving to Prep as important because “for those who will come later, part of my gratitude is that my children received an incredible education here. That was a gift from Seattle Prep to me. Giving just makes sense because of the kids who are coming next. I want to do this for them and see that they have the same chances my own children had.” Kathy also sees a longer-term vision in Building Our Future: The Campaign for Seattle Prep. “I see building the endowment for children who do not have means to help give them opportunities as important. I also want to see this building completed because we are lacking space for what we need to do in this next century. If everybody does a little bit, we will get this built.”
