- Santa Maria del Mare, Italy - Cruise Ship Terminal

M A N T ILLA

Tourism has been a problem for locals in Venice, especially when it comes to cruise ships, which not only cause protests for the negative environmental impacts but the damage on the building’s foundations. The proposed relocation of the cruise ship terminal satisfies the locals’ requests and brings a new opportunity for them to interact with the tourists. This project presents spaces such as a courtyard, market, soccer field, park, café, performance space, and more that serve the purpose to bring both locals and tourists together, this way forming a community. Sea level rise is challenging the way we design buildings, in response to this problem, this building is designed to float by applying the same concepts of buoyancy that allow ships to float. If the sea level rises to extreme levels, this building will freely hover and will bring the possibility of expansion by connecting similar modules creating a floating community.

The location for this project is currently a 1,918,160sqft concrete slab that is unoccupied. Most of the slab was removed and reused throughout the building and surroundings to bring more water into the site and the coast, allowing locals and tourists to have a better interaction with it. The immediate context around the site consists of docks, a few houses, and a hotel, while further away there are more residences, stores, and restaurants. Besides serving as a cruise ship terminal, this project includes a cafe, restaurant, bar, market, gallery, studio/classroom, performance stage, and office that bring new activity opportunities to the locals.

PARK

SOCCER FIELD

FOOD MARKET

Another big step was to convert a northern platform into a park that includes a diversity of Italian vegetation, making the site more sustainable and increasing vegetation close to 30% more than it was existing, which can serve as a home for local birds and small mammals. Ultimately this project becomes an example of how human-made features can easily transform into a more natural feature with simple sustainable design decisions.

SITTING AREA

PARKING

This building addresses sea level rise by elevating pedestrian and bike paths, allowing connection to boats, and by having the building float, which will allow the building to serve as a protective space for the community when needed.

RETHINKING THE RELATIONSHIP OF NATURE AND THE CITY

M AT E O

- Hudson Yards, New York City - Urban Design, Landscaping

M A N T ILLA

The vision for this project takes the elements of wilderness paired with natural terrain and topography to transform the existing city into a more sustainable, natural form of living and working. In order to achieve an urban wilderness, the forest ecosystem was studied, and identified that it is made up of five main layers. By applying this system to our site, it was found that it allows for public uses that are connected, adaptable, and sustainable thus creating an escape in a dense urban setting. Skyscrapers make it possible for living to extend vertically but leaves urban life to exist solely at the ground level. Utilizing a layering system allows for more public areas to be distributed vertically creating density without crowding. The forest layers were identified and paired with the functional aspect of the city. the layers were developed based on natural forms and a shift in the city’s rigid grid to directionality that suits the site while allowing for organic movement.

Rainwater and gray water are collected to be recycled back into the site to be used for water features, greenery on site and drinking. The proposed green columns allow for structural support and vertical circulation while being the site’s main food supply. They are the site’s basis for sustainability and create retail spaces as well as gathering spaces at their base.

NATURAL GATHERING SPACES The upper layers allow for more provate natural gathering spaces rarely found in the city.

TRANSIENT SPACE The ground floor layer allows for flexible program and increased movement, making it a transient space.

WELLNESS RETREAT M AT E O

- Clearlake, California - Hospitality, Wellness Retreat

M A N T ILLA

This is a place for people looking to get out of the ordinary and get more in touch with nature. Many programs are offered thoughout the different buildings such as thermal baths, a library, an ouditorium, yoga studio, fitness studio, art studio, fire circle, and spa. The architecture is projected in a simple and straightforward way to highlight the nature in the surroundings which provides a natural immersive experience between the guests and the surroundings. This project explores exposure and privacy through nature.

The contrast between the lightness and comfort in the square, and the heaviness of the site inspired this project, which has the intention to unify the opposing concepts of heaviness and lightness through its architecture and materiality.

The corner of Congress & Drayton St. (Savannah, GA) served as a parking lot located next to BB&T. The emptiness of this space made the surrounding buildings considerably bigger and heavier which made this side of Johnson Square a very uncomfortable place to be.

ENLIGHTENMENT CHURCH

The building has been designed to allow the visitors to feel a progression from the ordinary to holiness; from the moment they start a journey from an open entrance that shrinks down in the form of a filter to represent the purgatory, which then opens up again revealing the church; while the visitor continues its journey to the center of the church, the noise of water slightly falling will give a sense of being set appart from the city. The shadows and the light entrance from the atrium combined with the reflection of the water will give the individuals a great opportunity to think and meditate. PO R TF OL I O

AN URBAN INFORMATIC RESPONSE TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS M AT E O

- Turkey, Lagos, Miami - Refugee shelter

M A N T ILLA

Whether by man-made or natural destruction, people around the world are rapidly being displaced. In a moment of crisis, whether it be war, disease, or flooding, efficiently communicating information is key to the resiliency of a community. SYNTAX is designed to be able to be transported by the same means of any search and rescue team, such as cargo planes, ships, or trucks. The structure is composed of an inner structural core and an outer skin icosahedron framing. These icosahedron framing systems can house the drone-like mobile modules in whatever orientation creates ideal environmental conditions. With weather data and interior environmental conditions constantly being evaluated by the system, the drone-like mobile modules can intelligently respond by orienting themselves around the skin of the building to keep interior conditions regulated. SYNTAX works to bring the future of architecture up to speed with the digital revolution by reimagining available technology as a potential intelligent building material.
