Dedication Wesley Wendt was a successful local entrepreneur, real estate businessman and a steadfast and dedicated pillar in his community. Although he began small with an ice cream stand in Verona (Custards Last Stand), Wes’s dreams were big as he went on to own multiple businesses including The Mason Jar in Vernon, Dibbles Inn in Vernon, Wendt University Inn in Hamilton and White Eagle Lodge and Conference Center on Lake Moraine in Hamilton…just to name a few. Adopted as a child, Wes was a self-made man who worked tirelessly to build his enterprise into the success it is today. Always thinking of others, he used his experiences from his meager beginnings to support other entrepreneurs in the community, doing business with only local companies from car dealerships to lumberyards to hardware stores. He always remained loyal and local. Even non-business owners knew they could turn to Wes in times of need for he forever had a hand to lend, advice to share and a smile to spare. From his many employees to his even more numerous friends, he touched the lives of so many.

Wes was a member of multiple local legions. He had a love for NASCAR and enjoyed attending the Daytona 500 every year since 1969. He also had an impressive collection of antique and vintage cars. Wes was an avid lover of Chevy vehicles and could often be seen parked in his Chevy truck at several of his properties, people-watching and catching a quick cat nap. Wes was a man who was larger than life, with a smile that warmed the heart and a heart so big it took care of many of those around him in both big and little ways. His kindness was far-reaching. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Dedication Mathew Lichorowic was a well-known successful, local restaurant business owner and an active volunteer within his community. He was born in Yorkville, NY and graduated from New York Mills High School. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy proudly serving from 1943 to 1946 on the Navy Destroyer USS Bennett DD473 in the Pacific Theater as a gunner. During that time he fought in several battles including the invasion of Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Bismarck, Archipelago, Marianas Islands, (Saipan, Guam, Tinian), First Philippine Sea, Palau, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His destroyer was hit by a kamikaze on April 8, 1945. The USS Bennett DD473 credits included 14 Japanese planes, 2 submarines, various shore batteries, two citations: one from the President of the US, Harry Truman, and one from the US Navy Dept. Bureau of Navy Personnel. Matt was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver and two bronze battle stars, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Discharge Button and Honorable Service Lapel Pin. Upon his return from military service, Matt (along with his brother) took over his parents business The Monarch Grille now known as The Club Monarch. He was in the restaurant business for over 60 years owning and operating various restaurants prior to his retirement. In 1963 he purchased Hart’s Hill Inn that is still family owned and operated today. As a tribute to his many years in the business, Matt was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management by Johnson & Wales College in Providence, Rhode Island. During the ceremony he had the honor of presenting daughter, Lori, with her diploma. At a later ceremony, he presented his grandson, Scott, with his diploma. Matt donated many years volunteering for various service clubs. He was a devoted member of the Optimist Club with 54 years of perfect attendance. He served as president for two terms, had an Honor club and was awarded the Distinguished President Award from Optimist international. He served as Governor of NYS Optimist and was awarded the Optimist Member of the Year Award at the West Point Convention. With dignity...Mathew passed away after a brief illness in February 2019

.J. Hinman Jewelers was founded by two Hinman brothers from Knoxboro, New York who were watchmakers. After a number of years, Altha Hinman purchased the business from her father and eventually sold W.J. Hinman Jewelers to her sister Ethel Cross. In 1957 Jack Wallace purchased the business that has remained in his family for forty-three years. Two of his children, Guy and Tari, who have been actively involved in the business for 19 years, took over the reins when Jack retired in January 1992.
•
Eli Freeman, Morris’s son, began working for his father at the age of 15. Through hard work and dedication, Eli taught himself the jewelry trade. While maintaining his father’s watch repair business, Eli transformed the watch shop into a jewelry store that could offer consumers fine diamonds, jewelry, gold and precious stones. To accommodate the rapid growth of the business, Eli then relocated the store to its current location at 165 Genesee Street in Downtown Utica.
Freeman & Foote Jewelers is proud of their 80 plus years offering customers a large selection of beautifullystyled diamonds and find gold jewelry at very reasonable prices and with superior customer service.
T
W
n 1922, founder Morris Freeman, a European watchmaker, came to the United States and settled in New York City. Shortly thereafter, Morris relocated to Utica where he opened a watch shop on Liberty Street and later moved the business to a facility on Bleecker Street.
Heidi Freeman-Foote, Eli’s daughter, followed family tradition and began to work for her father. However, upon high school graduation, she entered college where she earned a BA degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Higher Education. It wasn’t long, though, that she returned to her father’s business. Wanting to enhance the high integrity level of the business that her father had earned, Heidi worked full time in the business and continued learning about diamonds and the jewelry field. She acquired a gemological degree and earned a diamond-grading certificate from the Gemological Institute of America.
RENEE LEININ
Throughout its 120-year existence, W.J. Hinman Jewelers has strived for customer satisfaction whether it pertains to a jewelry purchase, jewelry repair, remounting of diamonds and precious stones or catering to customer special orders. Every purchase or service, such as same day ring sizing for Hinman customers purchasing rings, has always been backed by W.J. Hinman Jewelers’ steadfast philosophy of good customer service “after the sale”. Always offering a broad selection of fine jewelry at the lowest price everyday also eliminates the need for W.J. Hinman Jewelers to conduct a sale. It maintains its deep-rooted company belief that “you get what you pay for...good value, affordably priced!” The current owners, Guy and Tari, feel fortunate to have the opportunity to manage a local ongoing family business and find it a pleasure to serve the many loyal customers W.J. Hinman Jewelers has earned over the years. They invite you to “stop in and do business with familiar faces...we will do our best for you”!

The CNY Insurance Guy! Joel Siegfried has been assisting families in Central New York with their insurance needs since 2013. Whether those decisions are big or small, Joel continually looks for positive and creative ways to make families happy. With the realization that happy family life is one of the most important goals one can strive for. Yet, all too often, uncertainties, losses, and even fear, cause that happiness to wane away. What does this thought have to do with insurance, you might ask? Well keep in mind that the milestones that Joel treasures is not the meeting of sales goals set by any of the companies. It is not receiving an award that might collect dust on a shelf. Among those great milestones, are the beautiful summer day, when Joel and the love of his life Natalia, started on a wonderful journey. Or in 2009 when their son Nathan was born. We can even mention, when a new couple smiles knowing that one of their fears fades away due to an insurance policy built just for their needs. The point, cherish your spouse, protect your happiness, and if you would like assistance with insurance call Joel. It sums up with the words of Walt Disney: “The greatest moments in life are not concerned with selfish achievements but rather the things we do for the people we love and esteem.”

Choosing a Florist
Confetti Custom Celebrations, LLC
After you’ve ordered your wedding gown and your bridesmaid dresses, it’s time to choose a talented florist to design your bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres, ceremony, and reception flowers! Attending a wedding show is a great way to see fresh wedding bouquets and find a florist whose work you admire. Looking for bouquets online or in magazines will also help you to decide on a look you love- elegant, country rustic, garden, monochromatic, colorful, hand tied, cascade, etc. If you know what you like, you can convey that to your florist. Think about how the bouquets will look against the dresses, is there enough contrast in color to be visible and “pop?” Do you want classic all white centerpieces with white table linens, or would you like a brighter, colorful look? Try to imagine the big picture- flowers, linens, chair covers, etc. Take pictures of your gowns and ideas to your first floral consultation.
•
To help you choose reasonably priced flowers, the knowledgeable florist will tell you what flowers are in season. They can also suggest flowers that are strong, reliable choices for bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. If you easily build a rapport with a creative florist, and feel they “get” your ideas, they’re probably a good choice for you. Choose personal flowers- corsages and boutonnieres – that will coordinate with the bouquets and the dresses and tuxedos. An experienced florist who is familiar with your church or ceremony site will be able to help you decide where to use flowers. Some of these flowers can be transported to the reception for double use and greater value. Vases to display bouquets on the head table are a good choice; the flowers will be happy to be back in water, and will add color to your table for little cost.
A flexible florist will give you price ranges for almost everything on your wish list. Then you can juggle the numbers, and decide where to use your flower budget. What is most important to you: altar flowers that will be showy in your church pictures or larger centerpieces at the reception? Ask the florist questions about who will deliver and set up the flowers and how many deliveries are included in the price. You can be more comfortable with a floral designer delivering the flowers, usually to the home or hotel where you’re dressing, and later to the ceremony and reception site so that all is beautiful by the time you make your grand entrance. The key is to communicate what style you’re after, and listen to the florist’s advice on flower availability, reliability, colors, and tone. Flowers are a very individual choice and a good florist will create bouquets that you’ll love today and for years to come in your pictures.

A Teacher and a Lawyer walk into a bar…sounds like the start of a joke, right? But, it’s actually our story! Prior to opening our Event Planning business in early 2016, we had very different careers. Stacey was a teacher with degrees in Business and Education and Lee Ann was a Trial Lawyer. When our children started Kindergarten in 2008, our story began. It was at one of our children’s birthday parties that we realized we were kindred spirits. We both loved throwing themed parties for our children – leaving no detail unattended. For the next 8 years, friends and family would tell us to start an Event Planning Business. We would play with the idea, but the timing wasn’t right. Then in early 2016, the stars aligned and our idea became a reality. Which brings us to the bar… After doing a few parties for friends, we were invited to participate in a small Wedding Fair held at a local bar/restaurant. After seeing our booth, we were approached by the owners of the establishment who asked if we would be interested in creating some events for them. And so it began. We created Confetti Custom Celebrations, LLC. At Confetti, we create customized events – from Weddings to Corporate Events, from Baby Showers to Eco-friendly Parties and more. It is our goal to bring your ideas to life – to make your event a reflection of you. We create those special touches that set your event apart and ensure that it is an event to remember. We specialize in favors, photo ops, buffet backdrops, balloon work, Tablescapes & more. We do as little or as much as you need. Please call us for a free consultation at 315-982-1576 or message us on Facebook at Confetti Custom Celebrations by Stacey & Lee Ann. Be sure to check out our photo gallery for a small taste of what we do! Congratulations on your upcoming Wedding!

Bremer’s Wine & Liquor
CONGRATULATIONS on your engagement…I cannot wait to hear all about it!
Let me start by introducing myself…I am Jenn-the woman behind the camera. I have been capturing weddings in CNY for the past 6 years and have had the awesome opportunity of working with some of the sweetest couples! I live to tell stories through my ART and have a serious infatuation with capturing and documenting LOVE. •
The Bremer name has been linked to the retail trade dating back to 1876. In those early days, C.H. Bremer owned and operated a successful market and liquor store in downtown Utica, until the advent of Prohibition. Undaunted by the new regulations, C.H. changed his marketing plan and cultivated his store into an upscale market, selling the finest meats and produce, as well as homemade candies and spreads. When Prohibition was lifted, Bremer was granted the first liquor license in Oneida County, issued June 30, 1933. From that day forward, Bremer’s has grown to become the premier wine and liquor store in Central New York. Taking over the store after his father Merritt’s untimely death in 1959, Bud Bremer grew the store to become what it is today. He merged Bremer’s Liquors with Casey & Keefe, owned by Art Bullock. This created Bremer & Bullock Liquor Store, which was located on Oneida Square in Utica, N.Y., where it remained until 1999. Upon Art Bullock’s retirement, Bud and his son Tim purchased the Heritage Wine & Liquor store located on Commercial Drive in New Hartford, N.Y., and Tim became the fourth generation in the Bremer legacy. Tim had an extensive background in the wine industry in Napa, Calif., where he had worked for several wineries as well as a French wine barrel manufacturing company. With the business continuing to grow, in order to provide first-class service and selection to their customers, Bud and Tim made yet another move – purchasing a 20,000 square-ft. facility on Commercial Drive in New Hartford in 2003. This move allowed the Bremer’s to create the largest wine and spirit selection from Albany to Rochester, N.Y. When Bud decided to semi-retire in 2006, his youngest son Eric returned to the area from New England and took over at the helm of Bremer’s with Tim. Today, the business continues to grow, making way for the next generation and the continuation of the Bremer retail legacy.

All Aboard for Happily Ever After!! The stunning Union Station, located within Utica’s Baggs Square, is a statement of beauty and history. Architects Stem and Fellheimer started the construction in 1912 and finished in May of 1914. After being the third station built in this location, and running 60 years through the boom of the rail system during World War II, 1974 brought talk of demolishing the crippling station. Congressman Sherwood Boehlert and groups of concerned citizens fought for restoration instead. Over 3 decades, 5 phases of renovations and an estimated 6.5 million dollars later, we have the breathtaking, fully multifunctional Union Station. Within is held several businesses including the fine dining experience of Trackside Restaurant and Banquets. Owned by Cheryl Zammiello and Richard Goodman., who took over in 2012 after working for the previous establishment, Blue Flag. Inside the restaurant itself, besides hosting lunch and dinners, they provide a unique wondrous special event atmosphere. Baby showers, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties and any special occasion can be held in one of their three private rooms. Of course the most special event is the treasured wedding. Large weddings are typically hosted among the marble pillars and high-carved ceilings in the train station itself. With so much history in the 100 plus year structure, who wouldn’t want to say “I Do” surrounded by friends, family and the New York Central.

Pine Hills Golf Club Pine Hills began as a 9-hole facility, that was designed and built by Carl and Cecilia Grygiel. Carl came from a golfing family and was one of 7 brothers - all of whom were golf caddies before World War II. Out of the 7 brothers, 5 entered the golf industry and 4 became PGA professionals. Following his service in World War II, Carl returned and began to build his 9-hole golf course single-handedly with an 8N Ford tractor.
Now, Pine Hills Golf Course is in its second generation of ownership. Carl Grygiel’s son, Carl Jr., a PGA professional and his wife Becky, purchased the course in February 1985. Since then, they have continuously upgraded and improved the course. In 2011, they completed the construction of a brand new, Adirondack-style clubhouse. The majority of the wood used in the build was sustainably harvested from the golf course property and was processed with the family’s sawmill. In 2014, Carl’s son Clayton and his wife Erin began to assist in managing Pine Hills. They are continuing the tradition of providing a quality, full-service, golf facility with a familyfriendly atmosphere and are constantly upgrading all aspects of the business. Eventually, Clayton and Erin will take over the third generation of ownership, along with their children Olivia and Noah.

It was completed and opened to the public in 1954, but his work was not done. By 1965, Carl had built a new clubhouse and in 1967 he completed an additional 9-holes. He accomplished all of this with his wife and 3 children; Carol, Christine and Carl Jr. by his side. Carl was a kind and well-respected man who “lived and breathed” Pine Hills.
Delta Lake Inn who built Delta Dam and was called Delta Dam Hotel. After the completion of the dam, the hotel remained open as a stage coach station, thought its owners sought a different clientele. During the late teens and roaring twenties, the Inn found new life as a speakeasy where bathtub gin flowed lavishly. According to local legend, the Inn stayed open during the Depression as a house of ill repute. In the 1950s, Delta Lake Inn was reopened as a restaurant, and although it once closed for nearly a decade, the Inn has been operating as a restaurant ever since. The current owners have completely renovated Delta Lake Inn, with a sophisticated Adirondack Lake décor that reflects a warm and festive atmosphere. Today, Delta Lake Inn features five dining rooms, a bar, a piano bar, and a second-floor banquet hall. Diners today can enjoy the same great view of the Palisades as those who did over 100 years ago.

It was Deansboro where Buster Hughes established his dairy farm consisting of 97 milkers thus making his farm one of the largest in the area at that time. In 1945 he constructed a barn (unlike no other) that featured a beautiful laminated beam interior-curved ceiling. This roof was considered the “new look” in farm building architecture and Mr. Hughes’ new “curved roof ” barn was the first to grace the county landscape.

The hamlet of Deansboro, NY is nestled in the gentle, rich farmlands and rolling hills of Southern Oneida County. Established over 200 years ago, Deansboro was a little bustling farming community with its own railroad station (now listed in the National Register of Historic Places), the Deansboro Cemetery (with its first burial recorded in 1801) and the Congregational United Church of Christ which continues to serve the community today.
The farm was eventually sold by Mr. Hughes and later fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until May 2002 that the farm was purchased by Jack Buschmann, owner of The Village Tavern in Clinton. Jack, an avid horseback rider, always had a love for this particular farm and envisioned it as a unique outdoor entertainment venue with the majestic barn as its focal point. Jack, who doesn’t let grass grow under his feet, put his vision into motion by first renaming the farm MKJ Farm after his three children Margaret, Katie and John. It wasn’t long before his show roster listed outdoor concerts that featured well-known entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Sknyrd, Pat Greene, Eddie Money, Marshall Tucker, Brian Howe from Bad Company and the band Perry. What unexpectedly made MKJ Farm become a wedding site? Jack was friends with an engaged couple who lost the availability of another wedding venue. Desperate to find a location to host their reception, they approached Jack and asked if they could use his barn. Jack, a warm progressive, problem solving kind of guy, gladly reached out to help his friends and together they created the first wedding at MKJ Farm with these free amenities: beautiful, natural photography backgrounds, breathtaking vistas, fresh air, sounds of nature and a starry night. In addition to more weddings and other outdoor activities, what’s in the future of MKJ Farm? A name change perhaps since Margaret, Katie and John were later joined by the arrival of a fourth sibling…Alexandra…so an A will need to be added.

Esche’s Aqua Vino Restaurant & Banquets The construction of the Erie Canal began in 1817 in Rome, New York and was the first navigable transportation system built in New York State. Stretching from Albany to Buffalo, the canal... with its 36 locks...was considered a civil engineering and construction marvel of its time. Officially opened in 1825, the canal’s main purpose was to serve as an economical and timesaving transportation method for commercial and recreational watercraft. It not only saved time and money, but helped to stimulate growth and prosperity throughout the state’s region especially around the locks. One such area to prosper was the City of Utica via its marina. The Utica Historic Marina, located at 16 Harbor Lock Road, features a docking pier and an 8,000 sq. ft., two-story brick facility that overlooks the historic Erie Canal. The city owned structure is handicapped accessible and features a banquet room with seating for up to 150 people, restrooms, elevator, outdoor patio, parking and a year round restaurant located on the lower level...the prestigious Esche’s Aqua Vino Restaurant & Banquets. The restaurant, which opened in September 2007, is owned by Whitesboro native Robert Esche. Robert is a retired NHL goalie and serves as president of the Utica Comets. His vision was to reinvest in the community and to bring “a sophisticated, urban dining/banquet destination” with a waterfront setting to the area. Since its inception and through the efforts and dedication of Robert and the Aqua Vino staff, his vision has come to fruition making Esche’s Aqua Vino’s Restaurant & Banquets a highly sought after dining or banquet destination.
