The 2020 Qatar World Cup was easily one of the most exciting tournaments in our time. Whether you call it football or soccer(even though only one is the true answer), everyone was able to bond over these amazing matches. Many records were set this Cup. This was the first Cup to allow women referees in the games. Morocco was the first African country to ever make it into the semifinals, delivering many upsets leading up to their 4th place position. On an opposite note, this was also the first World Cup host to lose all of their matches. Mbappé, the rising legend, was the first player to score eight World Cup goals before turning 24 years old. Ronaldo was the first male to score at five World Cups. Messi, the first male to register an assist at five World Cups also takes the record for World Cup appearances from Lothar Matthaus. The final match between France and Argentina kept everyone on the edge of their seats. With a score of 2-0 Argentina in the first half, everyone thought the game was done, but Mbappé brought it back with 2 goals within 1 minute of the match, evening the score! The game goes into extra time of two 15 minute halves. An amazing goal from Messi during the 108th minute brings it to 3-2, with many hoping the game would end there. However, a penalty kick destroys this short lived happiness when Mbappé evens the score again to 3-3. With a tie score at the end of extra time, this final match goes on to penalty kicks, being the third time ever for a final to be decided by penalties. After a shootout score of 4-2, Argentina brings the cup home!! Messi completes his collection of awards with the World Cup Trophy and can retire knowing he is the GOAT.
