Ilse’s works depict a love for her adopted culture, mixing the precise art of etching with a world of emotions and spiritualism. Her art is a semi autobriographical journey influenced by Ilse’s fascination with the myths, legends, traditions and cultures of both east and west. Some of her artworks include Tristan and Isolde, the Malay Keris, cenderawasih the mythical bird of paradise, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, keroncong and gamelan. YAP CHIN HOE 叶振和 (b. Selangor, 1970) Rainbow of Life IV, 2018 Oil on canvas 40 x 76 cm Signed, lower left and on the reverse: CHIN HOE

Yap Chin Hoe has been a full time artist since he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Arts in 1991. He has finessed a refreshing contemporary interpretation of classical Western still- life - the Oriental antiquewares bring grace and poise to an otherwise traditional theme. Intricate details - the fluttery of dragonfly wings, phoenix flapping its wings, soft tendrils of foliage, graceful translucent drapes - and a more vivid palette have infused his recent artwork with new vitality. His delicate brushstrokes reveal a meticulous quest to capture the ethereal quality of the antique porcelain, while brilliantly coloured Nyonya and batik fabric serve as a counterpoint to the austerity of the blue and white china. The image of raucous Peranakan revelry comes to mind when flamboyant tapestries are paired with equally dramatic wares

From his drawing or sketches, is no doubt he understands the value of the first attempt - the quick sketch or the initial drawing. For it is frequently within that first observation that the artist captures the essence of the thing observed through his/ her feeling of, or reaction to, the subject they are observing. It is this initial relationship (to the subject), which often proves to be the most profound, for an artist.
