PRESS RELEASE Recent Presentation of Books to Government Officials Basseterre, St Kitts; 4 July 2012: The Jamaican Kittitian (JamKit) Association, the Association of Jamaicans and friends of Jamaicans living in Federation of St Kitts & Nevis (SKN), recently played host to a group of twenty (20) students and lecturers from the University of Technology UTech) in Jamaica. The Study Tour by the eighteen (18) students [and two (2) lecturers] pursuing their Masters of Science (MSc) in the Built Environment formed part of the Calendar of Activities for JamKit Association’s Celebration of Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Political Independence and took place 12-19 May 2012. It was during the visit of this group that the JamKit Association launched its Jamaica 50 SKN Essay Competition for Primary School Students, High School Students and Young Adults ages 16 to 25 years old, which is also part of the Calendar of Activities for Jamaica 50 SKN Celebrations. A Launch Ceremony was held in St. Kitts on Monday, 14 May at which the Honourable Nigel Carty, Minister of Education & Information in the Federal Parliament, was the main speaker; and another in Nevis on Thursday, 17 May at which the Honourable Hensley Daniel, Deputy Premier in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), representing Premier Joseph Parry who is the Minister in charge of Education, was the main speaker. During the St. Kitts Launch Ceremony Minister Carty was presented with a book written by a Jamaican about Jamaicans, Jamaica’s Gifts to the World by Lloyd Eubank-Green, for the Library of the Ministry of Education. The presentation was made by Mr. Laurence Neufville, the Coordinator of the Study Tour and Chair of the Post Graduate & Research Committee, Faculty of the Built Environment, UTech.


The Minister of Culture, the Honourable Marcella Liburd, who was also in attendance at the Ceremony, was presented with a book of poems entitled The Garden Path and written by Mr. Francis Malcolm, one of the students in the MSc Group, for the library of the Ministry of Culture. The presentation was made by the author. At the Nevis Launch Ceremony Mr. Neufville presented Honourable Daniel with a book entitled Jamaica by Ray Chen for the library of the Ministry of Education & Library Services in the NIA. Mrs. Lornette Queeley-Connor, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education & Library Services, was also presented with a gift of Marley Blue Mountain Coffee from Jamaica. These presentations support JamKit’s thrust towards the exchange of culture among Jamaicans living in the Federation and Kittitians and Nevisians.
