THE AMBLI DTC RESTAURANT WAS A TENANT FINISH PROJECT LOCATED ON THE SOUTH-EAST CORNER OF THE BELLEVIEW STATION COMPLEX. WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE OWNERS, WE WERE ABLE TO HELP CREATE A SPACE TO MEET THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS. THE NEW RESTAURANT FEATURES A FRONT BAR AND LOUNGE WITH AN OUTDOOR SEATING AREA, A FRONT AND PREP KITCHEN, A MAIN DINING ROOM AND A PRIVATE DINING ROOM. TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED LIGHT AND OPEN FEELING FOR THE RESTAURANT, WE USED GLASS CURTAIN WALLS TO SEPARATE THE MAJOR AREAS, HIGH CEILINGS AND LARGE COFFERS. IN ADDITION TO HELPING KEEP THE OPEN FEEL, THE LARGE COFFERS WERE ALSO UTILIZED TO HELP DEFINE THE SEPARATE AREAS AS WELL AS PROVIDE US WITH A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR DIFFUSED LIGHTING.

THE FAY RESIDENCE NEW ADU PROJECT WAS THE DESIGN OF A NEW DETACHED DWELLING UNIT IN THE BACK OF THE FAY RESIDENCE LOT. THE NEW ADU FEATURES A TWO-STORY HOUSE COMPLETE WITH ONE BEDROOM, BATH, KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM ON THE MAIN FLOOR AS WELL AS A LOWER LEVEL GARAGE ACCESSED BY THE REAR ALLEY, WORKSHOP AND UTILITY ROOM. WANTING TO SEPARATE THE EXTERIOR OF THE EXPANSION FROM THE EXISTING BRICK HOME YET ALLOW FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION, STUCCO WAS CHOSEN AS THE NEW MAIN SIDING MATERIAL. TO ACHIEVE THIS TRANSITION, WE CONTINUED THE EXISTING BRICK WITH A SHORT BRICK WAINSCOT ON EITHER SIDE OF THE HOUSE WHICH CARRIED ALONG THE WALL UNTIL THEY MET A PATIO DOOR WHICH WE DECIDED WERE FAVORABLE STOPPING POINTS.

THE ORVIS RESIDENCE PROJECT WAS AN EXPANSION OF A SINGLE FAMILY RANCH STYLE HOME. THE SCOPE OF WORK INCLUDED ENLARGING AND RELOCATING THE KITCHEN TO A MORE CENTRAL LOCATION, A NEW LIVING ROOM, MUDROOM, MASTER BEDROOM AND COVERED CONCRETE PATIO. FOR THE NEW ROOF, WE CHOSE TO USE I-JOIST RAFTERS INSTEAD OF TRUSSES IN ORDER TO HAVE VAULTED CEILINGS TO KEEP THE NEW SPACES MORE OPEN. THE USE OF RAFTERS ALSO ALLOWED US TO SEAMLESSLY EXTEND THE ROOF AND COVER THE ENTIRE PATIO.

ARCH 253 | INFILL PROJECT | 2014 BUTTE, MONTANA

A RESIDENCE INFILL PROJECT BEGAN WITH THE CHOICE OF CLIENT WHICH BECAME GRAPHIC DESIGNER, JOSHUA DAVIS. AS A CONCEPT FOR THIS PROJECT, I STUDIED DAVIS’S WORK AND DISCOVERED HE WOULD INSERT A SERIES OF DRAWINGS OR PICTURES INTO HIS SELF-MADE PROGRAM WHICH WOULD TAKE THESE IMAGES AND MOVE THEM AROUND TO GENERATE RANDOMNESS. DAVIS WOULD THEN USE THIS VIDEO TO DISPLAY BEAUTIFUL MOVING SHADOWS, OR WOULD CHOOSE TO CAPTURE AN INSTANCE WITHIN THIS MOVEMENT AND WOULD HAVE A DRAWN MASTERPIECE. I THEN USED HIS IDEA OF RANDOMNESS TO CREATE A CONSTRAINED PROGRAMMATIC SOLUTION TO DEVELOP UNIQUE FLOOR PLANS THAT APPEARED RANDOM, BUT CORRESPONDED WITH EACH OTHER BOTH VISUALLY AND STRUCTURALLY. WITH THE FLOOR PLANS SET, I LOOKED TO DAVIS’S WORK OF THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR PHANTOGRAM’S “VOICES” TO DEVELOP CUTS WITHIN THE FLOOR PLATES TO GENERATE SHADOWS AND LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. TO CREATE AN ACCOMMODATING FACADE WHICH SPOKE TO THE LANGUAGE OF THE INTERIOR, I USED THE ARCHITECTURAL TRICK OF FLIPPING THE FLOOR PLANS. ARCH 354 | HYDROLOGY INSTITUTE | 2014 SEATTLE WATERFRONT-SEATTLE, WA

THE HYDROLOGY INSTITUTE IS AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY, USED BY BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC ENTITIES, THAT RESIDES NEAR THE SEATTLE WATERFRONT. THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH A CONCEPT DERIVED FROM THE EXPLORATION OF A NATIVE ANIMAL TO SEATTLE AT THE MACRO SCALE. THE END GOAL OF THIS WAS TO TAKE THE RESEARCH AND CREATE A MEMBRANE WHICH WOULD BECOME THE BASIS OF OUR DESIGN. BEGINNING WITH THE MARBLED MURRELET, I LOOKED AT THE FEATHERS AND THEIR FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE. THE MAIN DISCOVERY WAS THE INTERLOCKING MICRO-STRUCTURE OF THE FEATHERS THAT CREATES A BARRIER THAT ALLOWS WATER TO ROLL RIGHT OFF OF THE BIRD’S BACK. THIS FUNCTION OF THE FEATHER BROUGHT FORTH THE DESIGN OF MY MEMBRANE. FOR MY MEMBRANE, I USED THE IDEA OF ROLLING WATER ALONG AN INTERLOCKING MICRO-STRUCTURE AND CREATED A WATER FEATURE. THIS FEATURE WOULD COLLECT WATER IN A BASIN AND FLOW DOWN THROUGH HOLES THAT WERE CONNECTED TO STRINGS WITH WEIGHTS AND DROP INTO A POOL BELOW. THE PURPOSE OF THIS MEMBRANE WAS TO RELATE TO THE RAINY NATURE OF SEATTLE AND TO SHOWCASE THE ESSENCE OF RAIN SO YOU COULD SEE AND HEAR THE FALLING WATER WITHOUT GETTING WET. USING THE MEMBRANE AS A CONCEPT, I BEGAN TO LOOK AT WAYS TO DESIGN A BUILDING THAT WOULD EMULATE FLOWING WATER. THE END RESULT BECAME OFFSET FLOORS WHICH WOULD CREATE A SPIRALING PATHWAY THAT WOULD GUIDE VISITORS AS THEY WALKED THROUGH THE BUILDING.

ARCH 355 | BIRD OBSERVATORY | 2015

CHERRY RIVER FISHING ACCESS-BOZEMAN, MT

THE BIRD OBSERVATORY WAS THE FIRST OF THREE DESIGN STUDIO PROJECTS FOR THE SEMESTER. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A FACILITY THAT WOULD BE USED FOR BIRD WATCHERS AT THE CHERRY RIVER FISHING ACCESS IN BOZEMAN. UNLIKE NORMAL STUDIO PROJECTS, THIS PROJECT LASTED ONLY TWO WEEKS IN WHICH WE WERE ONLY REQUIRED TO PRODUCE A 3D WALK-THROUGH OR A BUILT MODEL. FURTHERMORE, WE WERE TO DISREGARD STRUCTURE AND FOCUS PURELY ON PLACEMENT WITHIN THE SITE, ORIENTATION AND FUNCTION. ALONG WITH THESE RESTRICTIONS, A SET DIMENSION OF 20’ BY 120’ WAS STRICTLY ENFORCED. WITH MY PROJECT, I FIRST CHOSE TO PLACE THE BUILDING ON THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE SITE. THERE WAS A GOOD VIEW OF LARGER TREES WHERE YOU WOULD FIND PREDATOR BIRDS. ALSO, AT THIS LOCATION THERE WERE PLENTY OF SHORTER TREES AND LARGE BRUSH TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THE SMALLER BIRDS. A GOOD VIEW OF THE POND FOR WATER FOWL FELT NECESSARY WAS ALSO PRESENT AT THIS LOCATION. I TOOK THE GIVEN DIMENSION AND TURNED IT AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE TO ALLOW FOR THE NEEDED VIEWS, AS WELL AS FIT MORE COMFORTABLY WITHIN THE CHOSEN LOCATION. I UTILIZED WOODEN SLATS EXCLUSIVELY SO AS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE VISUAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE OBSERVERS.

ARCH 355 | COMMUNITY CAFE | 2015 7TH ST-BOZEMAN, MT

THE COMMUNITY CAFE WAS THE SECOND STUDIO PROJECT OF THE SEMESTER AND WAS PURELY COMPUTER BASED. FOR THIS PROJECT WE WERE GRANTED THE OPTION TO EITHER WORK ALONE OR WITH A FELLOW CLASSMATE. I DECIDED TO WORK WITH A PARTNER, BECAUSE I FELT IT WOULD BE VERY BENEFICIAL TO LEARN HOW TO DESIGN IN A GROUP WHERE YOU MUST COLLABORATE ON THE DESIGN PROCESS AND COMPROMISE ON ISSUES THAT ARISE AS YOU WOULD IN A REAL FIRM. THE GOAL FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A COMMUNITY CAFE THAT WOULD REPLACE THE EXISTING ONE. THE REQUIREMENTS WERE THAT IT MUST FIT A CERTAIN VOLUME OF INDOOR SEATING, HAVE GARDEN SPACE, A CONFERENCE ROOM, KITCHEN AREA, STORAGE AND OFFICES. MY PARTNER AND I DID A SERIES OF LIGHT STUDIES IN ORDER TO IMPLEMENT DIFFUSED LIGHT INTO OUR BUILDING. THIS BROUGHT FORTH HAVING THREE SEPARATE ROOF PANELS AT VARYING ANGLES TO ALLOW FOR THE MOST LIGHT TO PENETRATE THE BUILDING. FOR THE DINING EXPERIENCE, WE EXPLORED THE IDEA OF COMMUNAL DINING. WE USED THIS CONCEPT TO DETERMINE THE PLACEMENT AND SIZE OF TABLES TO ACCOMPANY MORE GUESTS TO GATHER AND EAT TOGETHER. FOR THE EXTERIOR GARDEN SPACE, WE DECIDED THAT INSTEAD OF BEING JUST A GARDEN, WE WOULD INCORPORATE DINING. THIS GAVE PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DINE AMONG THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THAT THEY WERE EATING.

ARCH 355 | ROOFTOP RESIDENCE | 2015 MAIN STREET-BOZEMAN,MT

ROBERT LAUTMAN "Photography and Lunch."

THE ROOFTOP RESIDENCE WAS THE FINAL PROJECT OF THE SEMESTER AND WAS PURELY MODEL BASED. THIS WAS TO FORCE US TO WORK OUTSIDE OF THE COMPUTER. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A RESIDENCE FOR A FAMOUS BOZEMAN NATIVE ABOVE AN EXISTING BUILDING ALONG MAIN STREET OF DOWNTOWN BOZEMAN. THE CHOSEN CLIENT FOR MY PROJECT WAS ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHER, ROBERT LAUTMAN, AND THE BUILDING WAS THE DOWNTOWN CO-OP.

He was equally at home with the modernist and the historical aesthetic. Lunch with him was always the most delightful, fun lunch you'd had for months. Always interested in the doings of others, he had an intuitive handle on human nature that served him well in his work. It gave his photos a very warm feeling, an approachable feeling.

I STARTED MY DESIGN PROCESS WITH AN EXPLORATION OF ROBERT LAUTMAN. WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT HE WAS AN ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHER, I BEGAN LOOKING INTO THE DESIGN OF CAMERAS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, WIDE-ANGLE AND TILT/SHIFT CAMERAS. I LEARNED HOW THEY UTILIZE A SERIES OF LENSES TO MANIPULATE LIGHT. FURTHERMORE, I WAS FASCINATED WITH THE DESIGN OF THE TILT/SHIFT CAMERA, AND HOW IT IS ABLE TO BEND IN ORDER TO CONTROL DISTORTION. FROM THIS RESEARCH, I WANTED MY CONCEPT TO CONTAIN THIS MANIPULATION OF LIGHT AND THE BENDING DESIGN OF THE TILT/SHIFT CAMERA. IN MY RESEARCH OF ROBERT LAUTMAN, I DISCOVERED SEVERAL IDEAS THAT HE LIVED BY. THE ONE THAT STRUCK ME THE MOST: “PHOTOGRAPHY AND LUNCH”. IT WAS HIS LIFE MOTTO, AND IT WAS WITH THIS QUOTE THAT I HAD FINALIZED MY CONCEPT; HOW LUNCH, OR DINING WITH OTHERS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. FOR MY FINAL DESIGN, I TOOK THESE CONCEPTS AND CREATED A RESIDENCE WHICH PORTRAYED THAT OF A TILT/SHIFT CAMERA. THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY USING SLATS TO MANIPULATE SHADOWS WITHIN THE BUILDING AS WELL AS UTILIZING VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL SHIFTS TO ACCOMPANY PROGRAMMATIC NEEDS. INCORPORATING LAUTMAN’S QUOTE “PHOTOGRAPHY AND LUNCH”, I PLACED THE KITCHEN, DINING ROOM AND FAMILY ROOM IN THE CENTRAL SECTION OF THE RESIDENCE. THE FOCAL POINT BEING THE IDEA OF “LUNCH”.

SENIOR CAPSTONE | BOZEMAN HYBRID | 2015 DOWNTOWN-BOZEMAN, MT

THE FINAL PROJECT OF THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM WAS TO DESIGN A HYBRID BUILDING LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN BOZEMAN. MY DESIGN PROCESS STARTED WITH A SITE ANALYSIS WITH BOTH THE CURRENT AND HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF THE SITE. THE SITE WAS LOCATED BETWEEN WALLACE AND CHURCH STREET ON THE SOUTH SIDE MENDENHALL AND NORTH OF THE ALLEY. I DISCOVERED THAT THIS SITE HAS ALWAYS HAD A STRONG INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL FEELING; WITH GRAIN ELEVATORS, TRAIN TRACKS, A CONSTRUCTION SUPPLY STORE, AND A RESTAURANT INSIDE A RENOVATED TRAIN STATION. BASED ON THIS ANALYSIS, I DECIDED TO GENERATE A PROGRAM THAT FIT THE AGRICULTURAL LANGUAGE AND BEGAN WITH AN AQUAPONIC SOLAR GREENHOUSE. WANTING TO CAPITALIZE ON THE PRODUCE OF THE GREENHOUSE I THEN CHOSE A RESTAURANT AND CULINARY SCHOOL. I SAW THE ESSENCE OF THE GREENHOUSE AS A MODERN FARMING SYSTEM, SO CHOSE A CONVENTION CENTER, WHICH COULD HOLD FARMER’S MARKETS TO ALLOW FARMERS TO NETWORK WITH EACH OTHER. WITH THIS IDEA OF NETWORKING IN PLACE, I DECIDED ON ADDING A FOOD HUB. LASTLY CAME RESIDENCES, A PRESCHOOL, AND A PARKING GARAGE WITH 200 SPACES TO FILL THE ASSIGNED PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS. WITH THE PROGRAM SET, I WAS ABLE TO CREATE A BUSINESS MODEL FOR THE HYBRID: THE RESTAURANT OWNS THE FARM-THE FARM FEEDS THE RESTAURANT-EXTRA FOOD GOES TO THE MARKET-MARKET FUNDS PAY THE BUILDING FEES. TO MEET THE PASSIVE STRATEGIES REQUIREMENT OF THE PROJECT I INCORPORATED SOLAR HEAT GAIN BY UTILIZING PV PANELS ON THE WEST, SOUTH, AND EAST SIDES OF THE BUILDING. I ALSO CREATED A THERMAL MASS WITHIN THE PARKING GARAGE RAMP AND FEATURED CROSS VENTILATION AND A GREEN ROOF.
