We’re In The Convenience Business You knew it all along. You knew it would come to this. Getting to your customer about as quickly as the thought entered their mind that they were going to need you. “ASAP” was replaced with “We Need It Yesterday.” And now it’s been replaced by an app that allows them to ‘check in’ in order for you to see where they are, anticipate what they need by way of where they are and what they are doing, and get it delivered to them before they change their mind and choose a 7-11 closer to them at the moment. I’m painting a hypothetical picture here, but I’m not too far off. Our Technology feature this month (p. 6) looks into the latest app for just this scenario. “7-Eleven Inc. is making it easier than ever for 7NOW delivery smartphone app users to order their favorite products and get it delivered to anywhere they are. With the latest app update, the convenience store retailer set up thousands of locations called 7NOW Pins that enable customers to receive delivery where it’s convenient for them. This proprietary technology allows customers to order the delivery service to parks, beaches, sports fields, entertainment venues and other public locations that may not have traditional addresses.” Our Environment feature looks at the plastic waste problem we are all hyper aware of. There probably would already be some kind of workable resolution on the table, except the bottled water industry continues to fight any regulation, because they say they are singled out as the largest contributor of plastic waste. They have lobbyists who will likely keep plastics free and clear from any ban. The UK meanwhile, has taken some brave measures, to take place in 2020. Read about those in this issue. Bob Cota, former employee of Getchell Brothers, Brewer, Me, passed away, and we share his obituary with you. Many of you may have known him, and our thoughts and prayers go to his loved ones, including his Getchell Brothers family. It’s almost convention season, and the IPIA will be meeting in Ponte Vedra at Sawgrass. Their save the date notice is on page 8. It is bound to be a wonderful event. They always are! Enjoy the last sales of Summer, and let us know how your season was. Better yet, just let us know how you are, period. We always enjoy the calls and emails we get. Best to you,
Mary Yopp Cronley, Editor, Refrigeration Magazine

ICE IN PICTURES
Thank you to Forbes Wilson for providing this photograph. Forbes’ father, John Wilson, was Factory Manager from 1966 to 1980 at the West Shore Road ice works. Forbes explained, “This photograph is from the old Granton Ice factory on the West Shore Road. The date of the photo is unknown but is definitely pre-1952 since a crane was no longer required when the new, adjacent factory opened in 1952.” The 2 cwt ice blocks were loaded onto the crane and taken down to the cold store for storage. This was essentially a large freezer where up to 100 tons of ice could be stored to meet peak demands. The chap 2nd from the left is Dick Angus. He stayed with the firm and ended his days as the Chief Engineer.

“7NOW Pins makes convenience more convenient, by keeping customers in the moment, whether at a game, in the park or enjoying the sun on the beach. Our customers asked for it and we are delivering!”
When ordering items through 7NOW Pins, customers can choose from a wide variety of: beverages; fresh and hot foods; beer and wine in participating markets; snacks; cosmetics; home goods; and thousands of other products available for purchase.
DELIVERY 7-Eleven Inc. is making it easier than ever for 7NOW delivery smartphone app users to order their favorite products and get it delivered to anywhere they are.
ith the latest app update, the convenience store retailer set up thousands of locations called 7NOW Pins that enable customers to receive delivery where it’s convenient for them. This proprietary technology allows customers to order the delivery service to parks, beaches, sports fields,
entertainment venues and other public locations that may not have traditional addresses. “Our mission is to redefine convenience by becoming a customer obsessed, digitally enabled company,” said Gurmeet Singh, 7-Eleven chief digital, information and marketing officer.
7NOW mobile app users also have the ability to view their last order and simply click reorder to add all their favorite items to their cart. “Sometimes things can get inconvenient away from home. It could be running out of ice and charcoal at a picnic or a hungry Little League team demanding pizza and Slurpee drinks after a big game,” said Raghu Mahadevan, 7-Eleven vice president of delivery. “We continuously challenge ourselves to find even more ways to offer convenience
and value to our customers — when and where people need it most. 7NOW makes ordering and getting delivery in about 30 minutes a reality for customers whether they’re at a park, a ballfield, arena, venue, and of course, at home.”
The 7NOW delivery app is one of several new services implemented by the 7-Eleven digital team as part of a companywide commitment to give value and delight for every customer experience, in and out of the store, according to the convenience retailer.
“Sometimes things can get inconvenient away from home. It could be running out of ice and charcoal at a picnic or a hungry Little League team demanding pizza and Slurpee drinks after a big game.”
Based in Irving, 7‑Eleven operates, franchises and/or licenses more than 68,000 stores in 17 countries, including 11,800 in North America.
The 7NOW and 7-Eleven apps are available from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: ❶ To order delivery to a 7NOW Pin,
shoppers simply open the app, which will auto locate their current location or show the nearest 7NOW Pin on the app’s interactive map.
❷ Each 7NOW Pin corresponds to a public place or space where users can receive the delivery.
❸ A courier will pick up the order from the nearest participating store and deliver it to the selected 7NOW Pin location or specified address in 30 minutes or less on most occasions.
7-Eleven introduced delivery in late 2017 when it began testing the appbased service at select stores in Dallas. Today, 7NOW is available in 27 major metropolitan areas, with more than 200 cities and serving more than 23 million households. For a complete list of the markets 7NOW delivers to, CLICK HERE.

UK launches fund to help create PLASTIC PACKAGING FROM PLANTS
he UK government has announced plans to invest £60 million to help fight the battle against single-use plastics and develop new forms of packaging. Businesses are expected to jointly invest up to £149 million. Funding could be used to find ways to cut waste in the supply chain, develop new business models and create new sustainable recyclable materials. The plans form part of the government’s Clean Growth Challenge – a key part of the Modern Industrial Strategy, which is backing the development of plastics made from plants, and products that degrade easily in an open environment.
The government has published a call for evidence on standards for bio-based materials and biodegradable plastics. It is seeking evidence from scientists, manufacturers and the research community on the sustainability and wider impacts of biodegradable, compostable, and bio-based plastics and asks whether new and improved standards and labelling for these materials would be valuable. UK Research and Innovation CEO Professor Sir Mark Walport said: “Plastic pollution is a global crisis that affects our oceans and our land. The new investment through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund will establish the UK as a leading innovator in smart and sustainable plastic packaging
“We have put a record level of research and development investment at the heart of our Industrial Strategy – investing to support our best minds and businesses in developing the solutions and industries of tomorrow. 8 REFRIGERATION Magazine │August 2019
solutions, delivering cleaner growth across the supply chain, with a dramatic reduction in plastic waste entering the environment by 2025.” UK Business Secretary Greg Clark said: “We have all seen the enormous damage being caused by single-use plastics across the world. The race is on to develop new effective and practical solutions to end the scourge of singleuse plastics, helping protect our planet for future generations. “This government and business coinvestment clearly demonstrates that when it comes to cutting plastics pollution there is a shared ambition. This is a unique opportunity for our worldleading businesses and innovators to develop the materials of the future with the potential to transform our economy as well as our environment.” The announcement comes two months after the UK said it will ban the sale and use of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds with plastic stems in England from April 2020.

Ice Ball Machine Maker Bartending world’s new miracles. Luxury crystal ice spheres plays important role with high-end beverage. Thanks to the sophisticated shape creates a new visible value and drinks flavor. The relationship between ice and whiskey is delicate. Ice can low the temperature of whiskey so that lock the aroma of it. Besides, Whiskey itself has a heavy alcoholic taste, and some of the taste is particularly spicy. Adding ice can bring more enjoyment to you when drinking whiskey. It looks more beautiful due to the large transparent ice ball.

formerly of Getchell Brothers, Passes Away Refrigeration Magazine is saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Cota in late July. Bob started his over 20-year career at Getchell Bros. in 1985, working across both the ice and ice cream areas of the business. He covered nearly all of Eastern Maine at some point during his time with Getchell Brothers. “Bob was one of the nicest people and was always willing to lend a hand or an ear. He will be missed by a lot of people, particularly here at Getchell Bros.,” the company stated.
