Marine Corps Marathon Medical Tents Get A Helping Hand from SPTS Members The Marine Corps Marathon, held October 27 in Washington, DC, drew 30,000 runners and was a sellout again this year. Despite the government shutdown that threatened the race, it was a resounding success. Captain Michele Leavitt Weinstein, MSC, USN, PT, MS, SCS, ATC, Department Head and Physical therapist at Naval Health Clinic Quantico, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and long time SPTS member, not only teaches the Emergency Medical Responder course before the event, she is the medical logistics officer, coordinating all the medical and a thousand personnel. It is a daunting task.

Some of the 30,000 runners in the Marine Corps Marathon.

"I didn't get a lot of sleep in the days leading up to the Marathon," Shelly says, "but it was all worth it in the end." This year, Donna Merkel and Alan Crothers, other SPTS members, co-taught the EMR course, which hosted 28 students and 4 recertifiers, several of whom stayed to help as medical personnel. Donna also participated in the Boston Marathon as medical personnel.

Taking the SPTS to the 2013 National Student Conclave by Michelle Luchini, SPT, EMR The Ohio State University, Class of 2014, SPTS Member As a third year physical therapy student from The Ohio State University, I had the opportunity to attend this year's National Student Conclave, held at The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, KY. This event is held every year and PT students from around the nation come together to explore, promote, and educate themselves about the physical therapy world and all it has to offer. At the conference I attended a lecture on The ACL "Today", which was given by Terry Malone and Mark Paterno. Not only did these two educators and researchers give us background on the epidemiology and mechanisms of an ACL tear, but they also spent time showing videos, interacting with students, and giving demonstrations throughout their presentation. Students I spoke with, including myself raved about their topic the entire conference. Another lecture I attended that really hit home was on "Clinical Residency and

Fellowship Programs," presented by John Dewitt, Matthew Briggs, and Kendra Harrington. This presentation caught the hearts and minds of students everywhere as physical therapy specializations continue to grow. Specifically influential for myself, was the discussion of a new online application process through RF-PTCAS, which was just launched in September 2013. These two lectures and many others presented by SPTS members have inspired students like myself as I continue to pursue professional goals in Sports Physical Therapy. Outside of the conference schedule, participating as a SPTS volunteer was one of the most energizing and impactful experiences at the National Student Conclave. As a volunteer I had the opportunity to work in the exhibit hall at the SPTS booth. I interacted with other students who shared my same interest

and passion for sport's physical therapy. In addition, I was able to educate many on the benefits of membership, events provided by the SPTS, and ways to become an involved member. As a volunteer I hope to show my gratitude to the sport's section for all of their hard work and dedication to student members, while educating and mentoring students on the opportunities available to them. The National Student Conclave is an exceptional event that allows students to learn, network, and personally engage with other physical therapy students and sections as they find their passion and develop their own professional goals.
