BASEL INNOVATION CENTER “Innovative Hub for Creative Minds”

Master’s Degree Thesis Project 2019 | 2020 -Pair work project Basel has been a prominent city in the pharmaceutical and biochemistry industries since the 20th century, and the chronicles of the “Innovative Hub for Creative Minds” started when the decision was made to reinvent the 70-year-old Schällemätteli Campus, as per the request of the University of Basel, in order to become a prominent Life Science Campus. This is an innovative turning point for the Dreiland region, and Switzerland as a whole. This was not only a challenging task because the site, Plot n.4, was considered the heart of the campus accommodating the Chemistry, Physics, and Anatomy Departments, but also because it lies in between the actual campus and the residential district.

Therefore, the main aim was to design innovative laboratories with maximum efficiency, within a complex geometry reflecting the “Reimagined Urban Area” concept of an innovation center, and to restitch the urban fabrics of both the campus and the residential district by designing buildings that serve as a transition between the two scales.

‘Basel Science Campus – Innovative Hub for Creative Minds’ is based on a “3-belt” concept, which allows the new complex to act as a connector between different spaces, districts, and piazzas.

Conceived as a two-phase construction process, the architectural ensemble consists of two main buildings, connected underground, which provides two “urban layers”. Both buildings allow for multi-use and interactive spaces, maximizing work performance as well as providing leisure and communication hubs. The building is accessible from every corner, and the porosity and ease of pedestrian accessibility facilitates circulation around the campus, and from one facility to the other.

Just as Plot n.4 is the heart of the Campus, a Forum extending from the second basement up to the roof is the heart of the complex; a contemporary “Lichthof” acting as a communication hub. The Forum substantiates the idea of a clear functional and spatial organization of the building, amidst its complexity. The Forum provides a powerful spatial experience by means of an architectural promenade throughout the building, in order to break the conventional perception of ‘scientific laboratories’ and reveal the “unexpected”.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS MUSEUM “The Needle and Thread”

Complex Construction Studio I Spring 2019 -Pair work project ‘Needle & Thread’ is a pair-work project that constitutes of six separate buildings all connected underground in a homogenous urban layer. The underground level is enriched with natural light and playfulness, in the sense that it imitates the urban level and allows people to reach the different parts of the project through an underground promenade. The purpose was to restitch the two parts of Citta Studi that are divided into an area of high activity and a dead area that we intended to revitalize. This was done by maintaining the heritage buildings and analyzing the different urban fabrics, pedestrian & vehicle circulation, and public transportation.

We pedestrianized an entire street and deviated the vehicular path to create a social hub, and a green area that invites the target audience in. Thus the name of the project ‘Needle and Thread’ indicates the concept of restitching urban fabric parts and connecting the separate buildings above the ground floor level through a unified underground floor plan.

MULTI-USE REVIVING THEATER “The Olona Magnet”

Architecture Construction Studio Fall 2018 -Pair work project Located along the Olona river side, in the Lombardy region of Italy, the site is in an industrial zone with a specific industrial character because of the existing factory buildings, which were used for paper manufacturing. There is a small bridge crossing the river and connecting the site to the nearby residential area. This project today serves as a public gathering place and is maintained by an non-profit organization aiming to revive the area of Fagnano Olona and Gorla Maggiore, neighbouring the site. The main element of the site, considered as a “landmark”, is the circular tank that serves as a meeting multi-use pavilion.

Our project aims on reviving the site by focusing on the weak points and enhancing them. The project will be partially cantilevered above the tank to attract the attention of the people and embrace the existing landmark. The roof of the building will be a green accessible roof so people can enjoy the view of the park and the river. Such a building can allow the site to be more accessible and used by the inhabitants. It will host a multi-use theater and a gallery/ exhibition part that can display works of art including the history of the industrial heritage. The main entrance will be from the tank to make it the heart of the project.

This project was later published in the ‘ Master Degree in Architettura delle Costruzioni’ yearbook of Politecnico di Milano

SABRA & SHATILA’S SOCIAL HOUSING “Filled Residual Space- Stitched Mental Barrier”

Final Bachelor Year Project Design Studio X- 2018 For my Bachelor Degree’s final project, Mazraa district in Beirut was chosen due to a variety of factors; ranging from the importance of its edges, to its surroundings.

The theme was based on ‘Residual Spaces’, meaning that the choice of land and concept had to be related to places that are insufficiently used. Ared Jalloul, where the selected plot is located, is an area in Tarik El Jdideh surrounded by residential buildings and the ‘Sabra and Shatila’ Palestinian refugee camp from the South. The selected plot currently serves as a garbage deposit for both communities of Sabra and Tarik El Jdideh. It also creates a mental barrier between both communities where inhabitants of Tarik El Jdideh are in tension with those of Sabra. Major problems are noticeable in the area such as social deprivation, child labor, educational crisis, cultural spreading insufficiency, pollution, and economic problems. Therefore, the aim is to supply community spaces and students social housing therefore enhance services that equip the area with educational facilities including vocational classes, and crafts workshops, along with proper gathering spaces and safer housing. Interviews and extensive research were carried out in this controversial area of intervention. The design concept is explained in page 13.

BEY CITY’S COMMERCIAL HUB “The Mater Plan’s Focal Point”

Design Studio VIII - Spring 2017 Design VIII students were asked to study the urban aspects of Ramlet el Bayda area to come up with a collective master plan. This area is mainly known for its sandy public shore and beach; however, once the study and analysis phase started, many hidden aspects and stories were revealed. The chosen site is located on the coastal line and is considered as the intersection point of the collective Master Plan with a surface of 16000sqm. From its location, the main focus is to create an inviting place that can act as a connector to my classmates’ projects on adjacent plots.

The site is surrounded by public roads usually heavy in traffic hence causing noise and air pollution. Therefore, an inner courtyard functioning as a gathering public space is created. The program consists of a restaurant compound on the ground floor with a direct access to the courtyard, along with a resort with an access to the seashore through a bridge crossing the highway. This bridge also connects to an adjacent project forming part of the masterplan’s physical connections.
