Roofing: Installation, maintenance, durability, resistance to wind and fire, roofing pattern/texture/ colour.! Flashing: Installed along roof edges to prevent water from leaking into a roof assembly and eventually the interior of a building.! Underlayment: protects the roof sheathing from moisture until the roofing shingles are applied.!

EAVE FLASHING! Required whenever there is a possibility that ice might form along the eave and cause melting ice and snow to back up under the roofing shingles.! On normal slope roofs, eave flashing consists of 2 layers of 15lb felt or a single layer of 50lb.!

DETAILING FOR HEAT AND MOISTURE! Water penetration only occurs when ALL 3 conditions occur:! • An opening! • Water present at the opening! • A force to move the water to the opening!

OPENINGS! Planned: windows/doors/skylights! Unplanned: Deterioration of construction/ materials ! Common techniques used to REMOVE OPENINGS to prevent water penetration include:!


- Sealants (silicone)! - Gaskets (pre-framed shapes made from artificial rubbers)!

Gutters and downpipes keep water away from building! -Slopped roofs carry water away! -Overlaps (tiles)!

NEUTRALISING FORCES! • Gravity! • Surface tension and capillary action (air pressure/wind)! • Momentum! • Air pressure!

GRAVITY STRATEGIES ! Typically use SLOPES and OVERLAPS to carry water away from the building using the force of gravity.!

SURFACE TENSION AND CAPILLARY ACTION STRATEGIES! Typically use a DRIP or a BREAK between surfaces to prevent water clinging to the underside of surfaces (eg Windowsill/ parapet capping)!

CONTROLLING HEAT ! • -Heat conducted through the building envelope! • Subject to radiant heat sources! • Thermal mass used to regulate heat!

Thermal insulation ( reduce heat conduct)!

- Thermal break (reduce amount of conduction, made from low conductive materials like plastic/ rubber)!

- Double glazing so the air spaces between glass panes reduce the flow of heat through the glazed elements and reduces sound transmission!

- Glazing is most effective on inside.! - Chemical coatings, block sunlight and radiant heat!

RADIATION ! Reflective surfaces - reflective materials ! Shading systems - used on outside of building!

CONTROLLING HEAT! Materials include masonry, concrete, water bodies!

CONTROLLING AIR LEAKAGE! • -Need opening! • -Need air! • -Need force to move air through opening!

Building wrap helps with air leakage/waterproofing! Polyethylene/reflective foil materials!
