Duane  was  born  and  raised  in  Louisiana  and   has  resided  in  St.  Tammany  Parish  for  the   last  twenty-­‐five  years.  He  graduated  from   Nursing  school  in  1980.  He  is  board  cerDfied   in  Psychiatric  and  Mental  Health  nursing  by   the  American  Nurse  CredenDaling  Center.   Duane  reDred  from  Southeast  Louisiana   State  Psychiatric  Hospital  aIer  25  years  in   State  service.  He  held  numerous  posiDons   while  at  Southeast  Hospital  including  Facility   Manager  and  Manager  of  Adult  Services.   Duane  was  Nurse  of  the  Year    for  Southeast   La.  Hospital  in  2000  and  recognized  by   District  Nurses  AssociaDon  as  Nurse  of  the   Year  in  2000.  AIer  reDrement  from   Southeast  Hospital,  he  returned  to  nursing   as  the  Director  of  Nurses  at  Family  Home   Health  in  Bogalusa,  La.  and  Director  of   Nursing  at  Greenbrier  Hospital  in  Covington.   He  most  recently  was  the  Administrator  of   Oceans  Behavioral  Health  Hospital.

Middle-­‐aged  men  and  women  suffering  from  depression  may  be  more   suscepDble  to  demenDa  later  in  life,  a  new  study  finds.  Researchers   conducted  a  life-­‐course  study  that  first  looked  at  the  incidence  of   depression  in  midlife  among  13,000  people  ages  40  to  55.  As  part  of  the   examinaDon,  the  parDcipants  answered  detailed  quesDons  about  their   health  behaviors  and  medical  histories,  and  had  their  height,  weight  and   blood  pressure  recorded.  The  researchers  then  looked  at  the  same   people  again  between  1994  and  2000  to  see  if  they  were  depressed  in   older  age.  From  2003  to  2009  (when  the  average   age  of  parDcipants  was  81),  the  researchers  follow-­‐   ed  up  to  determine  if  they  had  been  diagnosed  with   demenDa  or  Alzheimer’s  disease.  The  study,  re-­‐   ported  in  the  Archives  of  General  Psychiatry,  found     that  people  who  had  depressive  symptoms  in     middle  age  (but  not  later  in  life)  were  about  20     percent  more  likely  to  develop  demenDa  later  on.     People  who  became  depressed  in  later  life  were  70   percent  more  likely  to  develop  demenDa  than  their     non-­‐depressed  peers.                                                                                       SOURCE:  Time,  5/8/12
