ESTABLISH

“The 'Enlightenment' which discovered the liberties, also invented the disciplines. Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish - The Birth of the Prison

Investigating what one understands the twenty-first century library to be, personal exploration into the possibilities of what the library possibly becomes. Currently gaining enlightenment through the library has liberated the common individual. However, centuries ago, the elite were only equipped with the skill to read, keeping the masses ignorant. This project focuses on what, the future of the library potentially manifests into. Rome, acts as a microcosm of how corruption of government, the oppression of knowledge and disciplining the masses is the future of the library.

PERCEPTION

“If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened - that, surely was more terrifying than mere torture and death. George Orwell, 1984

“A punishment like forced labour or even imprisonment – mere loss of liberty – has never functioned without an additional element of punishment that concerns the body itself rationing of food, sexual deprivation, corporal punishment, solitary confinement… There remains, therefore, a trace of ‘torture’ in modern mechanisms” Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish- The Birth of the Prison

“When a man cannot chose, he ceases to be a man... If I had died it would have been even better for you political bratchnies, would it not, pretending and treacherous droogs as you are. Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange

This is the historical reality of the soul, which, unlike the soul represented by Christian theology, is not born in sin and subject to punishment, but is born rather out of methods of punishment, supervision, and constraint. Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish - The Birth of the Prison

“Every age that has historical status is governed by aristocracies. Aristocracy with the meaning-the best are ruling. Peoples do never govern themselves. That lunacy was concocted by liberalism. Behind its “people’s sovereignty” the slyest cheaters are hiding, who don’t want to be recognized.” Joseph Goebbels - Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany

“Immunised by routine. In and out. Watching the Romans, trapped in this addiction. Dependant on these films, these grotesque films. Feeding us. This was not Knowledge. Our forefathers reminisced the “book”. Now hidden, accessible only to the elite few. This was our world. 2080, Libraries are no longer of freedom, of liberation. Force fed ideals through these mind numbing movies, the Romans, queue hours before their next fix.

The select books that the elite held, teased through the chambers. Provoking curiosity and sorrow in those who wanted to explore, craved the illumination that they held. Glancing at the elite travelling up and down the translucent structure, shadows that deride. What they know. and you will never”

“Watching the Romans, the mindless masses. Contained. Fixated by these films that govern their minds. Although, there are always some individuals that prove to be one of the enlightened. That resist. These are the select few that vigilance is required for. If not, They could rebel, rebel against the system and reveal the rveliquary. Our books, Our secret. We were the illuminated. Preventingz rebellion, we take the select few, with a glimmer of interest. Interest of what we know and they do not. Who question these shadows in the centre of this beast are. we feed their their hunger for the knowledge we hold, after initiation, observing if they are worthy, to become one of us.

“It’s funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen.”

“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces”

Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange

George Orwell, 1984

If rape and poison, dagger and burning, Have still not embroidered their pleasant designs On the banal canvas of our pitiable destinies, It’s because our souls, alas, are not bold enough! It’s Ennui! — his eye brimming with spontaneous tear He dreams of the gallows in the haze of his hookah. You know him, reader, this delicate monster, Hypocritical reader, my likeness, my brother! Les Fleurs du mal - Charles Baudelaire

STATION

The chosen site in rome has an extensive history, with fragments of ancient Rome remaining, there is a somewhat sombre atmosphere when questioning what the height of Roman architecture was. In keeping with the notion of history and what was once great, the demolishing of literature, art and culture in the portrayal of the corrupt dictatorship presented, adds yet another potent layer of history and loss.

Site Plan 1.1000

The church, San Nicola in Carcere adjoining to site, contains ancient crypts and human remains also shares a dark, uncertain atmosphere. Using the uncertainty felt when entering the basement containing these fragments, this becomes a secret access for the Elite. With the basement of the Indoctrination Centre penetrating the crypts, revealing the disguised library and access to the elite core of the Indoctrination Centre.

luring the

masses

Ascension Clambering up the St Peters dome, the sensation of anxiety and precariousness was overwhelming. The intention to create a similar sensation to the masses climbing up the numerous flights of stairs, on their seemingly eternal journey up the floors of the building is made. As the masses ascend up the stairs they are exposed a similar uncertainty with the tapering of the elite core altering the gradient of the wall. Also the absence of insulation and solely relying on the cold steel structure for support, exposes the masses to the seasonal elements, further adding to the anxiety of their journey through the ranking system the Indoctrination Centre possesses.

Material Studies Juxtaposing beaten corten steel with experiments from resin infused with a variety of materials, created the ideal difference in atmosphere between the elite core of the building and the areas that the masses consume. The privileged versus the deprived.

Diagramatic Plans According To The Understanding of Foucault’s “Dicipline and Punish”

An appreciation of Michel Foucault’s theory on discipling the human body to create docility, is fascinating. Creating docile bodies ideal for the new industrial age, trained for politics and warfare. Understanding “Discipline and Punish” and adapting the theories into the Indoctrination Centre proposed, I focused on the psychology of an individual through spaces such as isolation, individual chambers, entrances and staircases that restrict, with their narrow nature and enduring journey towards becoming one of the elite. The organisation of individuals in space works according to certain rules. The whole process works within a larger space, such as the prison, which is divided into parts or cells. Foucault presenting the idea that discipline depends on the idea of a series, Such as a line of pupils or a rank of soldiers coheres with the architectural narrative presented. The progression up the Indoctrination centre the masses get, the higher the ranking of the masses. Foucault thinks of these institutions in terms of machines and living organisms. Institutions like prisons, schools and hospitals acted like machines for transforming and controlling people in this period. To do this, they fixed individuals in time and space.
